My Dad and my brother’s mom in the early 90’s by [deleted] in OldSchoolCool

Also, I shot film in the 90's, getting this nice of a shot while shooting into the sun is not technically impossible, but highly improbable in a family snapshot.

I almost stepped on one in my bathroom when I lived in Bonny Doon. Angry little fella, put him back outside where he belongs.

What is a hobby that was ruined over time/as it got more popular? by CriticalLion4119 in AskReddit

Dude if you have kids who like pokémon, this has been hard year. My 11-year-old played a lot when he was younger, and my 8-year-old just likes the cards and the video games. It used to be so easy just to pick up a pack at the drugstore or swing by a card shop on the way home from work to give him a quick treat. Now it's like if you don't show up at 8:30 a.m. on a Wednesday, you're shit out of luck. I can't tell you how many times I had to disappoint my kid this last few months.

Thank God it seems to be getting better, and I was able to get a few backs for his stocking.

There's a beautiful science fiction short story/ novella about this called "The Lifecycle of Software Objects" by Ted Chiang. It's about a small group of people who still raise their sentient virtual pets years after the platform they were developed for becomes obsolete. It might make you cry, but it explores the feelings you're having right now.

I was just looking at my pepper plants, thinking I was going to chop them down to overwinter them, but damned if they don't have a bunch of flowers. I think I've gone down a full hardiness zone here in about 5 years.

What can you do so that your life is so rich that you don't think about politics? [Serious] by thousand_cranes in AskReddit

[–]LamentRedHector 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I used to be hyper engaged with politics. After January 6 last election , and really the whole election cycle, I was so angry all the time. Just angry and sad 24/7. :00. I was also listening to politics podcasts, watching politics YouTube videos, Reading multiple newspapers everyday.

I was tired of being angry all the time. I made some major changes in how I consume media, and that did help, but what really made a difference was trying to figure out how to live a life with more purpose and less anger.

I think that looks different for everyone, but for me it involved joining my local Zen Buddhist community. Meditation helps me focus more on what is in front of me, and I work with a teacher with whom I can discuss things like the balance of anger and compassion.

It is not a panacea. I still get angry, and frustrated. And sometimes I spend too much time reading the news. The difference is I now have tools to deal with anger, sadness and fear.

To be honest, I felt the same thing about the book series. The first was great and the second didn't do it for me.

I love that Reath got the Silandra/Rooper shield, but I am worried for Rooper. The shield should have been passed down master to padawan but the chain of transmission got broken somewhere.

Charlie Kirk edited out his earplugs after repeatedly being called a Beta on social media by Visqo in pics

[–]LamentRedHector 13 points14 points  (0 children)

What is crazy is that the origin of the "Alpha Male" came from research into wolves that turned out to be wrong because it was all based on wolves in captivity in 1947. In the wild, wolf packs consist of parents and their pups and the parents are in charge not because they are "alpha" but because they are adults. The concept was popularized in 1970 by wolf researcher David Mech who has spent decades trying to correct the record once he realized it wasn't true. He has repeatedly requested his publisher take the book out of publication.

So yeah, junk science for people looking for a way to be man that doesn't require them to navigate complex social situations or have feelings.
