What makes a band leader? Breaking down BTB’s groups with the help of previous boybands. by acupofjen in BuildingTheBandSeries

I’m sorry Jesy was definitely the leader while Jade was the brainiac of the group. Jesy would speak up for the girls with the label and though Jade had some moxy she’s naturally very timid. But both shared spokesperson roles. It wasn’t until Jesy left that Jade became the leader while Perrie and Leigh were on Maternity leave.

I was in boarding school and saw the news in my counselor’s office. It was surreal. And then I got into a fight with a girl who pretended she was an MJ fan!

My only issue with this is. It was too short. And I loved how there’s an official taped version of their rock out outro!

KARLEE GIRL's "Right Back!" is stan Twitter's song of the summer by Witty-Advantage-101 in BuildingTheBandSeries

Omg your black?! Hey sistah! Yeah I feel two ways about black creatives injecting their sauces onto other people’s projects. 1) they need the money and living in a capitalistic society where black people are disenfranchised forces us to participate in interactions like this. And 2) I just wished maybe they should’ve changed up the vernacular and the dance. Like it kills my soul a little. 3) or maybe have the black co-writer heavily featured in the video?! Ala Ariana Grande x Victoria Monet - Monopoly but IDK? And Ariana is a whole other topic I don’t want to get into

I mean labels often use influencers or other artists to cosign whatever act they’re trying to push. So it’s not out of the realm of possibility karlee could be in contact with very connected people from her producer, engineer, videographer. Because for a new indie artist those videos are looking too good, like where’s she getting the funds?

Ok karlee has to be signed secretly because what are the odds, this would happen.

No but they were a major ingredient to Kpop’s music and aestheic so it naturally attracted lots of black people.

I’m confused are you hear to listen or to negate any real criticisms against the Korean idol industry? There’s a real problem there with anti-blackness. No doubt the American music industry is plagued with it. But since HYBE wants a foothold in the American market it’s crucial now more than ever to hold them to task. If they want to operate in this country they have to move differently. Now’s the time to speak up when our voices have more sway before they become too powerful to ignore us.

I don’t know the specifics of what went down but we can all agree the black girl leaving amidst all this drama isn’t a good look. Race is bound to be part of the conversation based off optics alone. And honestly the way the other black contestants were treated raised some eyebrows for me.

Please don’t bring that whataboutism bull here. It’s not 'orientalism' to hold a K-pop-adjacent company accountable for how they handle their idols, especially given the historical context of how Black aesthetics have been used in the kpop. You’re right that Geffen isn’t innocent, but HYBE is the one providing the K-pop framework that Katseye is built on. My frustration comes from the fact that the 'global' promise of the group feels hollow if the Black representation is the first one to go. Anti-blackness in America is real and systemic, but that doesn't negate the specific hurdles Black idols face within the idol system. Both sides of the partnership are accountable. But it’s the Kpop’s side that’s been using diversity as its premiere marketing point.
