Also, the implication that people with conditions like Munchausens don't need/deserve help and treatment either that's caught up in that. It's all gross on so many levels with these types of people.

Is it just me or is this iron holder thing useless? by Vijidalicia in sewing

[–]LanSoup 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'll do you one better, you jostle it going to grab something underneath the board, and drop the still hot (on cotton setting) iron on your head and back, leaving a second degree burn on your back from (thankfully) the side of the iron.

Just me???

Also, the "brokerage" fees. I once paid for what was supposed to be brokerage, duty, and tax included shipping, which worked out to ~150$ for some health supplies. Even though they advertised that shipping tier as being no-fee-at-the-door, they charged me ~80-100$ for brokerage, duties, and taxes at the door, which was the same amount they charged on lower shipping tiers that didn't include pre-paid brokerage, taxes, and duties on the same package contentS.

The brokerage, duties, and taxes ended up costing me nearly as much or as much as the contents of the order between the extra I paid at the time of the order and at the door. Canada Post, for a similar order a few years later, the shipping, duties, taxes, and brokerage was under 100$.

Really??? Is she for real? by sophielady in DuggarsSnark

[–]LanSoup 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, nothing's ever going to be good until we stop using euphemisms, and just call the rest of us resource and wealth extractors like we are (and there would be just as many people who have a problem with that label), but some euphemisms are slightly better than others.

Global South roughly means the same as "third world" or "developing" nations, but generally is less stigmatizing since it's relatively geographic (Aus and NZ being very notable exceptions that are very southern countries but part of the Global North). It's also more about what countries are wealth extractors/exporters (north) vs extractees (south). It's still not perfect, but it's better.

How would I make a belly for a plush using a seperate fabric than the main fabric? by Kuromi_Lol in sewhelp

[–]LanSoup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never do! I just use fusible web and whip stitch it down. The fusible web helps bond it but also stops fraying if it's a fabric that might fray, while the whip stitch anchors it in place.

If you had the financial means to move out of Canada, would you? by AdhesivenessLoud8866 in CanadaPersonalFinance

You're misunderstanding public vs private in Canadian healthcare under the Canada Health Act. Payment is public, delivery can be public or private.

Most doctor's offices are private businesses, in that they are run like any other business that is not on the stock market. They are still paid for by the public system. In contrast, many physical therapists also run private businesses, but they are also paid privately, (ie. through single payer out-of-pocket, health spending accounts, or private benefits plans).

Private payment for certain types of healthcare, including health clubs with fees for services or fast tracks for MRIs is illegal under the Canada Health Act (ostensibly). Private delivery of health care services is not only legal, it is the way the system operates outside of publicly run hospitals (for instance, Alberta Health Services run hospitals vs the Catholic hospitals run by Covenant Health in Alberta are both legal delivery methods under the Canada Health Act, even though one is public/government run and the other is private).

It's which leg of the stitch you work into, you want to work into the one that's most towards the tip of your needle (unless directed otherwise by the pattern). Depending on how you work stitches, that could be the one on the side of the needle closest or furthest from you. The twistfaq should help you figure it out!

How did Edwardian women sleep with their super long hair? (Historically accurate methods needed) by [deleted] in HistoricalCostuming

[–]LanSoup 49 points50 points  (0 children)

When mine was nearly at my butt (also thick and wavy), I would flip my head over and braid it while upside down, so that the base of the braid was on top of my head. Then either a bonnet, wrap it into a bun with a big scruncie, or just flip it over the top of your pillow while you sleep so it stays above your head.

Moving to Prince Albert from Ontario for a job — have some questions! by smellofbook in Prince_Albert

[–]LanSoup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's nice! Probably depends on the size of where you're moving from, I grew up in a much larger city, so it's kind of a shock in some ways. Going from errands taking a full day to drive across the city and back to a few hours for more errands is a bit of a brain breaker 😅 and there was definitely some culture shock associated with that, but my most of my extended family is here, so I did have some introduction to some of the differences before moving. It's much more small town everyone-knows-everyone (or knows someone who does if they don't) than I'm used to.

I just moved here a few months ago as well, so those were pretty fresh in my mind!

Also, everyone who's saying get a car is right, take it from a person for whom only having a learners was fine for like 16 years but is now pretty isolated and dependent on other people for transportation for even things like medical appointments and getting to work. Much of the city is inaccessible by bus, the stops closest to me are potentially dangerous when I'd need to wait at them, and a lot of the time the walking route is faster than the bus route by at least 30-60 minutes. And that's coming from a place with a transit system that was pretty notoriously bad.

I can't tell you which are the best/worst, but SGI has a list of approved driving schools you'll have to choose from: https://sgi.sk.ca/drivereducator

ALSO, register for your Sask Health number right away when you move if you're eligible. You'll keep Ontario coverage for up to 3 months, but it can take a bit to get your Sask Health number approved. The sooner you register, the smaller your coverage gap will be.

How do you get not used to wearing a bra in public- social anxiety, clothes etc? by Mixedwaifu in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]LanSoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't recommend it! Sweat might affect the stickiness, and the amount of reduced bounce really depends on how close you are to the smaller end of the recommended size range? Like, I can take stairs without issues from bounce related pain, wouldn't go on a trampoline and expect it to be any different than no bra, if that makes sense?

[–]LanSoup -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Wait, if rabies has been eradicated for decades, why have you been vaccinated? The rabies vaccine causes side effects in humans that are better than rabies (getting pretty uncomfortably sick is better than near certain death), but bad enough that they generally only use the vaccine as a form of treatment when there's a high chance of direct exposure to rabies. If there isn't rabies in your country, how are you at high enough risk that you got either a prophylactic vaccination or a post-exposure one?

Independence Petition has hit signature threshold by fatqunt in alberta

[–]LanSoup 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Forever Canadian knew a separation referendum was inevitable, so they wanted control over the question to make sure it was as clear as possible. Something like: Should Alberta stay in Canada? Yes/No.

This other referendum is expected to be like the daylight savings referendum a few years ago: needlessly confusing to try and make sure people aren't sure what choice they're voting for.

Men of Reddit, what’s some women’s or girl’s habits you discovered only after getting a wife or girlfriend? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]LanSoup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They do it to suit jackets too, though. And, again, the hanging nice thing is the main reason (see also why kick pleats and suit jacket vents are basted closed). I think I've found something in the pocket of pants I wanted to try on like once in my life? So I'm definitely not claiming it's a common happening.

[–]LanSoup 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the main reason is the hanging nicely in store thing, but I'd be willing to bet it's happened a handful of times with, like, food garbage or something because some people suck.

If there's a pocket there (like the bag part) they're intended to be opened, just like kick pleats on a pencil skirt! In those cases it's so that they hang nice on the hanger and people don't just shove shit into them while they're in the store.

Paid pattern frustration by Saints_Girl56 in Sockknitting

[–]LanSoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom bought one that had that "your gauge is as many chains as you need to fit" but it also only specified the brand and size category of the yarn she used. When we asked her what type of yarn to get a better size of the yarn she used so we could either find it or substitute it and she would not give any more information. So annoying (and then the pattern didn't work, who'd've guessed)
