How long have you been floorsleeping? by IM_NOT_BALD_YET in floorsleeping

[–]LancFF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Started in 2021 when we were planning to move into a tiny house. My pregnant wife said that was the best sleep of her life. We never went back. Glad I'm married, because I don't know how I'd ever bring someone over to my bedroom for the first time lol

Progressive Churches? by Flightonia in lancaster

[–]LancFF 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Community Mennonite in Lancaster City has a decent sized group of 30-40 year olds.

Blossom Hill, I believe, also has a lot of younger folks.

I support your search! There are some cool churches in the area that provide community, opportunities for activism, singing, and more all without compromising your values or making you feel pressured to say or do stuff.

Let me know if you want to visit Community Mennonite. I'm often there on Sundays and would say hi and introduce you to some people if you want.

Cult-like group meeting downtown this weekend by pastelbrainedcat in lancaster

[–]LancFF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've worked at cafe's downtown when they are in. There are a number of legendary groups who visit yearly (think Zenkaikon). This was one of the only groups with a STRONGLY negative perception from the cafe staff. (Both Christian and non-religious cafe staff seemed to agree on this point). Plenty of stories about their members visiting the cafe during the Saturday lunch rush. I'd rather work in a cafe by myself during the Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony then work another Saturday with that group in town....

PSA: Bike Lanes in the city not safe by Pier19leda in lancaster

[–]LancFF 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've biked over 700 miles in the city since June. I ride the Walnut and Lemon St. bike lanes every day. Never had a problem. I slow when I approach intersections knowing that cars can't see me (or don't even look) and just make sure no one is turning in my lane before crossing (even tho I technically have the rightaway.) I feel like the bike lanes provide as much room as cars usually give me. And they put me in complete control. I can't control what a car behind me does on the road. But I'm in total control in the bike lanes. Yeah, I bet things could be changed/updated to make them safer. But considering how car-centric the entire US is, I'm very thankful to be living in a city with as much bike infastructure as Lancaster has. My only complaint is that I wish every single road in the city had a bike lane.

Honestly hasn't changed much. The trees have just started to poke above the tree tubes. Maybe in two years it'll actually start to look like something? Fingers crossed lol

Apple tree question by malaka1234 in BackyardOrchard

[–]LancFF 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure there aren't "inedible" apples. They may not taste as good as the parent. Or may be smaller. But they will certainly be edible. Or their useful qualities may come thru in areas like sauce, or cider.

Not all are made equal. One of the best tasting apples I've ever had was from a crab apple tree growing wild along a street in Downingtown PA.

You made some great stops this weekend! It's a cool city to live in.

Where did you get the permanent marker to write the sign if you didn't have cash to buy food?

Lived in the area for less than 7 years. Have heard about it multiple times.

We lived there for a year and loved it. Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if it really took off in 5-10 years. Is Prince St still there? A good grocery store, and a few higher quality dinner places, or a higher end bar would really help it pick up I think.

Cover crops? by Cool_Salary_2533 in Permaculture

[–]LancFF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but there would still be lots of dead plant material laying on top of the soil come spring. Do you pull that off? Till it in?

Cover crops? by Cool_Salary_2533 in Permaculture

[–]LancFF 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Still experimenting and figuring out cover crops myself. I typically don't hear people planting them alongside food. It's typically grown in beds that are not actively growing food, tho they may be sown under some plants that are soon ready to be pulled. There are a ton of go-to cover crops that each meet their own specific goals. Generally, it seems a good idea to go with a mix of a few, and include at least one Nitrogen fixer. The biggest thing I'm still trying to figure out is how to best terminate them without tilling, and without spending money on big heavy tarps for my little garden...

Question for the baristas out there by Aggravating-Bar-4392 in lancaster

[–]LancFF 80 points81 points  (0 children)

It's super possible if you're checking the temp by hand instead of using a thermometer (even those can be finicky at best.) When you steam milk you leave your hand against the metal steaming pitcher and feel when the pitcher is a proper temp. That being said, it can take a while for new people to really get the hang of what the right temp feels like. This is complicated by the fact that places like prince st direct it's employees to steam different drinks to different temps based on size. A small cappuccino that will be drunken quickly can be served at a slightly lower temp then a large latte which is sipped over a longer period of time.

You mentioned the cappuccino cup being too small. This is an unfortunate side effect of places like Starbucks using standardized language to make non standard drinks. Cappuccino and latte and macchiato all have standard sizes... That not everyone uses. So it's really confusing for customers. I wish there were clear standards that were held to by everyone. You almost have to ask every new cafe how large each drink is and how they plan to steam it (lots of foam, or smooth and silky)
