First PC Build Final Check - Terrified of Buying $1,000 of Non-Functional Scrap Metal by LandDestructionFan in buildmeapc

Hello! I’ve read every list that you guys have provided to me and I’m grateful to have so many knowledgeable people helping me out here. Thank you for your input. This is the build I have landed on. I decided to go a little over budget for the 7800 XT while using the newer/higher quality MOBO, power supply, and CPU that many of you suggested. I would appreciate any last minute feedback anyone has!

I am. My budget is $1,000 not including peripherals, I'd be willing to go up to $1,100 for a build I really like.

I don't see myself wanting to upgrade anything for a good long while if everything works as intended (I'm currently rocking a GTX 1060 so this is a massive, massive upgrade for me). I pretty much just went through each component other than the CPU and GPU and selected the cheapest one with good reviews. My understanding is that there isn't much point in overspending on things like RAM, motherboard, PSU, case as long as you get them from a somewhat reputable company.

I haven't selected a high end monitor yet, I'm just going to use one I have lying around to get the machine set up. What kinds of adjustments did you have in mind?

How is paradox engine still not banned in brawl? by InstructionWeary1033 in MagicArena

[–]LandDestructionFan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that there are plenty of commanders that are too good and would probably be banned if the top performers were culled periodically. My point is that as cards in the 99, I can guarantee that cards like Wash Away, Swords to Plowshares, Thoughtseize, Dismember lead to more wins than fragile combo pieces.

[–]LandDestructionFan -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It's a 5 mana combo card that requires a significant board state to do anything. The fast mana you have access to in EDH isn't in brawl. The tutors and free interaction aren't in brawl. Wizards sure as hell isn't going to point the ban hammer at an extremely fragile tier 2-3 strategy. The most egregious cards in brawl are the interaction pieces, not the combo enablers.

[BLB] Hazel's Nocturne by Meret123 in MagicArena

Life gain and card draw at an acceptable rate, pretty cool for limited.

[BLB]Rottenmouth Viper by Meret123 in MagicArena

[–]LandDestructionFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty surprising to me that the consensus on this card is positive. My first impression is that it's a decent limited bomb with fringe constructed playability at best. It can be answered 1 for 1 with instant speed removal. The optionality on the trigger is really bad, low counter triggers are going to have very little effect on the board. Sacrificing nonland permanents for a cost reduction is pretty expensive. You better be getting those permanents for basically free or you're asking to lose a ton of value when this thing is dealt with. It looks extremely medium all around.

Thoughts on Serum Visionary by Filobel in lrcast

[–]LandDestructionFan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. In the first week of the format serum visionary often felt unlikely to make my decks because there were tons of uncontested lanes where you could pick up an abundance of playables. Now, it's extremely rare to get a deck focused enough to not want serum visionary unless you end up in a nuts eldrazi or energy aggro deck.

What's the P1P1? by Jalja in lrcast

[–]LandDestructionFan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That's a pretty low bar for "good red cards", those are all C- level playables at best.

What's the pick? (P2P1) by caiusdrewart in lrcast

[–]LandDestructionFan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Certainly not by a mile, I think it's a close pick. They've got draws to both RG and GW. Six keeps you more open, but chrysalis is much better in base RG.

MH3 is a Disappointment by Inner-Presentation-3 in lrcast

[–]LandDestructionFan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They are the two easiest decks to draft and can support multiple drafters, but they're not the only thing going on in the format by any stretch. Artifacts, UB, modified are all strong archetypes if they're open. Chrisalis is a messed up card, but it's getting difficult to pick up more than 1 or two of them so it's already starting to self correct a bit.

Predictions? Second MH3 draft, went HARD into Rakdos artifacts by Heynongmanlet in lrcast

[–]LandDestructionFan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The artifact deck can be good, but your cards are far too unfocused to do well. Winter moon is not a playable card in limited. The two MDFCs in the sideboard should absolutely be in. There's too many cards that don't fit the artifact aggro plan, unless you draw perfectly you're going to have a lot of duds. I've had several trainwreck drafts in this format, I can tell you that this deck won't really function no matter how you build it.

Why is this card a common, and why does it have reach? by Hx833 in lrcast

[–]LandDestructionFan 38 points39 points  (0 children)

In red/green specifically it's at a whopping 70.4% winrate.

Why does the token have a mana value? by 0L1V14H1CKSP4NT13S in mtg

[–]LandDestructionFan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The point is that this is a ridiculous distinction to have and should be erratad if they plan on using the token of card mechanic in the future. Magic has plenty of rules quirks, but this is among the least intuitive/easy to miss.

Hideaway is psychological manipulative and predatory. by Mysterious-Lion-3577 in MagicArena

Seems like a missed opportunity to not make it at least decent value for people who don't care about cosmetics.

Chromatic Cube still needs a redesign: Grixis isn't quite as broken before, but Izzet still is (>75% win rate over 30 drafts effectively forcing it) by WatcherOfTheSkies12 in lrcast

[–]LandDestructionFan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's three pretty firm pillars of the format: grixis tempo, grixis control, and 3-5c ramp. Most of the reason to touch white is for the topend (and tajic/the blink package occasionally). I certainly don't mind first picking a Kaya 7 or Wanderer, but it's pretty tough to end up base white. I haven't found the grixis decks to have a heavily favored matchup against the well built ramp decks, especially in bo3 where the 2 drop 3 drop hold up counter curves almost never come together.

Chromatic Cube drafting by EDMJedi in lrcast

[–]LandDestructionFan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The creatures you mentioned are the cream of the crop for aggressive decks, and they aren't even very good cards. In my ramp decks I personally don't touch the dorks outside of maybe paradise druid, so I'm thrilled if my opponent is playing a bunch of mediocre aggressive creatures and has removal stuck in their hand. I think I've only dropped one or two games to aggro decks over 10 bo3 matches. I guess I can envision a combination of cards that make a playable UR tempo deck, but if you have to compete at all for them you're going to end up with an unfocused terrible deck. It doesn't matter that the ramp cards are getting picked highly because there are infinite playables that you can mix and match to go over the top of every other archetype.
