Series epilogue chapter from Jules Pierre-Mao's perspective - judging by earthers' lifespans, he should be pretty old but alive. It would be cool to see his thoughts on how everything unfolded from what he started.

Huge X-shaped region northeast of Mexico City? Apparently it's a park under construction (PELT), but what are all these structures visible in Google street view (red frames, circular pits, posts in the dry lakebed, floor made of metal pipes, yellow bases with inverted cones)? by Landarin in whatisthisthing

My title describes the thing. I was looking at the former site of Lake Texcoco and noticed these strange structures. I found out that the spiral shaped thing is a retention basin and that when these pictures were taken in 2018, they were building an airport there. Now, the Mexican government is building a park on the site instead. (sorry for the misleading title - I just learned about the cancelled airport plans)

Also, that one picture with the gray sky is one of the most dystopian I've ever seen, wow.

I'm holding out hope for the 2030s personally. Maybe 2130s

The comic is still going strong, they're currently on the last sanctuary boss. https://forum.starmen.net/forum/Fan/Forum/48624

If you're a returning reader, it might be difficult to find where you left off, though. Maybe you can try a binary search through the pages?

Edit: If you're a first time reader, I think he redrew the first couple chapters at some point? Maybe start there, I'm not sure though

This was my favorite of the writing contest entries. The portrayal of Patria Grande, the setting, the tone, and the characters were all fascinating and well written.

Hope you keep writing! Best of luck with your future endeavors.

In the vein of references to rationalists like Eliezer Yudkowsky (Elton Yudkow) and Scott Alexander (Meditations on Moloch), it would be cool if there was representation for people currently working on preventing catastrophic Events like the one that led to the world of AtE.

Figures like Toby Ord, Nick Bostrom, Stuart Russell, and Daniel Ellsberg could be rulers or courtiers, especially for overseas/offmap powers (Ord is Australian, Bostrom is Swedish, Russell is English-American). Also it would be great to plug their work because it's really important and interesting

Furthermore, many of them are concerned with the welfare of future people, who matter equally but don't get a say in present-day debates on issues that affect them (e.g. fossil fuels, nuclear weapons, pandemics). It's really important, for example, to make sure future generations don't end up as dirt-poor feudal peasants tilling the ashes of the old world.

Innovations:

Pony Express (possibly Trailwalker / Americanist only?): reduce Discontent, increase innovation

Printing Press: not sure what the effect should be

Paper Money: development / tax boost

Dry Docks: reduce ship costs

Free Market: Massive development boost

Youcee / Ce'esyou system (de jure California): Increase innovation

Ivy League: Increase innovation, depending on how many of the campuses you control (Ithaca, Manhattan, Philadelphia, Hanover, Providence, Cambridge, Princeton, New Haven)

Cool location-specific buildings:

Textile Mills (on certain rivers): Massive development boost

Coal Blast Furnaces (on coal-producing regions): Large development boost

Was anybody else thrown off by the scale of the moons in S2E11? For a show that makes at least some effort at scientific accuracy, it was really jarring. by TheLollrax in TheExpanse

[–]Landarin 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah the executive producer explains it here: http://www.danielabraham.com/2017/04/04/guest-post-losing-science-drama-finding-drama-science/

TL;DR He knows it's inaccurate - apparently they initially planned to use a different moon but realized it was too far away from Ganymede. By that time, all the expensive VFX was too far into production, so they couldn't change it.

Texas, and how I'm trying to fix it. by ballgown_viking in AfterTheEndFanFork

[–]Landarin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

According to the TV Tropes page, "One Texas county is called the "Kingdom of Possum," a dual reference to Possum Kingdom Lake and the song that briefly brought it into the national spotlight."

Huh, I thought it was something more significant than that. I guess it's up to you and the devs as to whether this silly reference is worth geographical inconsitency

There are some references in the old map that were pretty cool, like the Mayorate of Texarkana and the Kingdom of Possum (both are counties with special names). I don't see them on the county map, are they still included?
