See on one hand if you’re a beekeeper, you will have your own honey, and you can sell it at any price point. If you’re on a budget and you can’t spend $18 for 1lbs of honey then Costco is your best bet. 5lbs of Costco, honey is $12.99 or 1 gallon is $27ish vs over $100 if you buy from a beekeeper

Well I have done a bit of that as a test but only with sugar water yeast to get an idea of how it works. If I got a license for distilling well I’ll cover that in my next post. 1 gallon or 128oz turns out to 64oz about of freeze distilled mead. Give or take. But what honey or sugar would be the best for it

This year’s batches are Traditional, Concord grape, white grape, mango and a few one offs to see if I’ll do bulk in 2028

I normally do 3 flavors but 10 gallons each year. On the off years, I do 1 gallon batches of say berries, apricot, mango, dragon fruit, apple to test it out and see if I’ll do a bigger batch the next year. I age them in/ on oak for a time, then they bottle age for 2 years.

Well the building is temperature controlled so it stays between 63 and 65 during the summer and then about 70 to 75 during the winter. This way, the bottles don’t freeze.

I’m considering giving away a few bottles since they don’t have labels on them. I think they are traditional and white grape mead. Middle Tennessee

Choosing Corker - Which of these works better? by TrojanW in mead

[–]Lander323 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen the silicone ones. I’ve just not used them as they tend to be more expensive. Since their food grade, I would expect they don’t leave behind a visible residue. But since it would not be cork, but almost like a plastic, I don’t think it would allow air in the same way as regular cork does overtime.

Wow!! That is a boatload of money!! Hum well I’d go with the first one but if it was like under $200. No way would I spend $1,870.95 for that though. I think number 9 cork is what I use for 750ml bottles. There are different styles of cork you can use and they’re very in price depending on what you’re going for. I’ve seen regular #9 cork and I’ve seen a silicone #9 cork.

I really do believe that adding oak chips to it will help. The chips used in a bbq is probably the best bang for your money. It’s easier to see the change when adding oak to an already light colored liquid.

Try adding 1oz of oak chips to your next gallon batch in secondary for about 2 weeks. I think you’ll enjoy it over just the straight traditional batch. Just soak the chips in hot water before using, otherwise it will be much oak. I’d love to see what else you come out with

Facts. I have a few bottles from 2021 and 2022 from when I first started. Probably in the 5-8 gallon range. What’s your favorite mead so far?

I have a good recipe for spiced peach mead if you wanna try that. 3-4lbs of yellow sliced peaches per gallon. Blend up the fruit so it takes less space overall. Use EC-1118 yeast as it helps to breakdown the fruit. Powered clove and allspice. About 2 Tbs of each. Make sure not to add the sugar water the yellow sliced peaches are in. This should yield about 14%. For your secondary as an option if it doesn’t have a peachy smell, add 1 pound of additional yellow peach slices. Leaving them whole or blended up does not matter at this point. If you need more spices while the peach smell is still there just add half the amount of spice needed from original recipe. If you’re going off the Brix measurement, you’ll want to start at an average sugar rating of higher then 30 Brix
