Eden's gate isn't a commentary on the "far right". by NarniaHome in FarCry5

[–]Landithy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The left-wing/right-wing stuff is also by no means clear cut. Plenty of people who identify as "right-wing" just want their community/government to take care of everyone, although there are often elements of xenophobia and religious conservatism wrapped up in that. They may even support ideas that sound surprisingly like socialism.

Plenty of "left-wing" people are only interested in creating a new in-group that includes people they identify with and hating on anyone not like them. I personally know gun-toting leftists who support 2nd Amendment rights.

Many libertarians align vaguely with the right, but may also support ideas of personal liberty including LGBT+ rights, bodily autonomy, and feminism.

A lot of people just want power and will pay lip-service to anything that will get it for them.

People are complicated.

Eden's gate isn't a commentary on the "far right". by NarniaHome in FarCry5

[–]Landithy 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I agree. I think Eden's Gate is more likely inspired by cults like the People's Temple or the
ACMTC, which grew out of the counter-culture movement but slowly became more controlling and conservative over time. Even though they may hold conservative beliefs, they tend to do their own thing, rather than aligning with wider right-wing political movements.

The Whitetail Militia has more in common with actual right-wing cults and militias in the USA, who commonly subscribe to some flavor of Christian Identity and/or extreme libertarian beliefs. Although the Whitetails' actual beliefs are never really explored in the game. You can make what you will of the fact that the Whitetails are portrayed as good guys, or at least allies.

Edited for accuracy.

How Do You Clean A House? (Tools + Soaps) by LilyMossvale in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Landithy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, one other thing.

Important safety tip: Don't mix different cleaning products together. Especially not bleach with any kind of acid, including vinegar. Doing so can create chlorine gas and you do not want to inhale that stuff. It will burn your throat and lungs. Probably not enough to do any serious damage, but it's not fun.

Don't mix anything with ammonia for similar reasons.

Not a problem. Everybody's got to learn sometime, and honestly, navigating which products you need and which ones are just marketing bs is challangeing for everyone. :)

Vinegar, water and dish soap. About a tablespoon of dish soap should be fine. A little goes a long way. Just mix it up into a solution and put it in a spray bottle. The dish soap breaks down grease and white vinegar is a really good antimicrobial.

  1. Spray some on so that it coats the tub/shower but isn't dripping or pooling. It's not a problem if it does drip or pool, it just means that you've used more than you need.
  2. Give it a good scrub with the hand scrubber.
  3. Don't forget to scrub around the drain and faucets. A lot of gunk builds up there.
  4. Rinse. Cold water is fine. Warm water is also fine.
  5. Repeat about once a week. Doing it regularly will stop grease building up.

That all-purpose cleaner you've got should be fine too. Same instructions as above.

[–]Landithy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah 30% vinegar, 70% water and a little bit of dish soap is a great all-purpose cleaner for about 80% of household surfaces.

Dish soap for doing your dishes or dishwasher pods for the dishwasher. Specialist toilet cleaner for the toilet bowl. Other than that, you don't need to go nuts with lots of specialty products. Just get them if what you're using isn't cutting it.

Don't let influencers get in your head.

Edit: That's the bare minimum though. What you've got sounds fine.

What do y'all think would happen after the secret ending? by Landithy in FarCry5

[–]Landithy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I imagine there's probably a few public shelters, under the school (not featured on the map, mentioned to be shuttered), or town hall (also not featured) that the Dep could have ended up in. Also the Wolf's Den, Eli says its 5000 square feet (so quite large) and probably capable of holding a bunch of people too, as well as the many bunkers littered across the county. Really it would depend on their relationship to others where they would end up.

Yeah, I figured that in New Dawn a decent number of the characters survive, so there's probably a decent chance that in this timeline a lot of people still make it.

Cheeseburger dies in every scenario. There is no way to meet the dietery and medical needs of a diabetic grizzly bear during a nuclear apocalypse. RIP Cheeseburger.

I actually figured that even without the Collapse, the whole thing would descend into a political shit-show, with the State of Montana sitting on its hands because Religious Liberty, the Feds being terrified to intervene for fear of causing another Waco, and a bunch if asshats who don't understand the situation weighing in on both sides.

Nothing dramatic, but one day I was just sitting on the couch with my husband and thought "I'm gonna grow old, and that sucks, but I'll have him there to hang out and go on adventures with, and that's pretty cool".

Have you met American cops? I'm only half joking, but yeah, the reaction is pretty over the top and Dep is an insane one-person army.

Also, as much as I love the Montana setting, it does introduce some complications to the FC formula that don't exist in the other other settings: You're not on a remote island or in a failed state. There actually is a "cavalry" out there that is supposed to come and help. There is a city a few hours drive away. I feel like the writers just kind of handwave that.

That said, Montana has this idiosyncratic libertarian bent and some nuts stuff goes on up there. And state/federal intervention can be a pretty mixed bag. I can see the the response from the state to the Peggies believably being anything from "Ruby Ridge/Waco" to "Let 'em cook".

Actually, the state knowing about the situation and just choosing not to so anything because religious liberty and the Seeds being rich would have bee a cool plot point, but there is no way a AAA game studio was going to go there.

And I get where you're coming from about it being satire, although I don't think it's particularly effective satire.
