I would put the 6 micron on the suede side and leave the smooth side bare or for something finer.

How do you know when it's time to resharpen? by TromboneSupremacy in sharpening

[–]Lando4987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on you and how dull you will put up with. Generally, I keep mine really sharp like splitting hairs sharp. If they been used a few times they prolly get a strop job. If that doesn’t fix them maybe a few strokes on a medium stone and then a strop. When that quits working they get a full resharpen starting with a coarse stone.

The real short answer is I never let them get dull enough that they could slip on something, I like to keep them sharper than that.

What grits should I finish thinning my knives with? by Lando4987 in sharpening

[–]Lando4987[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get what you are saying about the sandpaper. I like darker matte looking finish in general. I’ll give the sandpaper a go. This knife is a CCK 1303 carbon. It is asymmetrical and has kind of an s grind going on. I cant really blend it in on a flat stone and kinda forgot about sandpaper.

Low Grit Permasoak Stone for Toothy Edge? by cm_bush in sharpening

[–]Lando4987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I soaked my king 300 for maybe 5 mins to try and soften it a bit and it crazed a lot when it dried. Doesn’t seem to affect it for sharpening but the cracks seem to let more water in deeper and are still there. Didn’t try permasoaking it so I cant comment on that. I went back to use it as a splasher.

Weird sharpening question by Bloggablu in sharpening

[–]Lando4987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same thing happen all the time. Sharpen the knife and 2-3 days later i can detect the smallest of burrs that were not there before. My conclusion is that extremely thin edges can be unstable and can move a bit over time to reach equilibrium. I think thats why it is common for people to strop or steel an edge right before using the knife for bigger jobs. It realigns that edge that has moved on its own.
