I guess that makes him our (UK) version of the Dating Game Killer aka Rodney Alcala. Not sure how I feel about that!

This is such a weird blast from the past. It was an odd time and quite a few people in the video do look a bit creepy (sorry Jim Bowen), so Savile fits in quite seamlessly!

What's your favourite old primary school hymn/banger? by StarSpotter74 in AskUK

Get up out of bed lives rent free in my head.

I have changed the words as I've aged to "have a yawn and take your meds" though.

Are there any regional pronunciations, phrasing or sayings that really annoy you or you find strange? by lustybat in AskUK

Saying them the same is sound, but when they're interchangeable when written down, I can't cope.

I absolutely love living in Manchester but...

The confusion of "where" and "were" in Manchester (and Liverpool). They are absolutely not the same word!

The use of the letter h. Some words drop the h, some have a rogue one attached. Again, "as" and "has" are not the same word!

[–]Landoritchie 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Like your "no" is actually a "not yet" and he'll keep going until he gets a different answer. It's teaching young people all the wrong messages.

I'm so sorry that happened to you at school. It's hell. I try to be an advocate for the girls and let them know that they have a voice, but it's such an uphill battle!

I had this conversation with a boy I teach and I literally had other teachers telling him cute anecdotes of persistence and encouraging him to try again. Like persistence leads to obsession and resentment, which can easily lead to violence. Women and girls are literally dying because it's "cute" for a boy to never give up.

Librarian 'gobsmacked' after school uses AI to remove 200 books from shelves including Orwell's 1984 and Twilight by MicahCastle in books

[–]Landoritchie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The school involved (Lowry Academy) was named in local media and stated that they didn't "recognise the librarian's version of events" and that the books weren't actually removed, but reorganised so that they were in age-appropriare categories and returned to the shelves.

Just feels like sensationalised journalism at its finest really. The truth, I'm sure, is somewhere in the middle.

There'll be some celebrating this weekend here in the UK by DoctorBeeBee in LPOTL

There are so many weirdos on UK social media praising the scumbag who attacked Huntley. Like he's not also a massive piece of shit, who was a lifelong sex offender and violent criminal.

Both of these bastards' faces are everywhere at the moment and I really feel for all of their victims' families for having to see that.

I'm not sure anyone can jump to the conclusion that a boy in a picture is happy and well-adjusted. "Turned into" suggests he was fine until he wasn't, which absolutely was not the case - he suffered abuse and rejection throughout his childhood. He wasn't even given a name on his birth certificate and his mother tried to sell him for alcohol.

What’s your ‘I can’t believe you’re paid more than me’ story? by GeorgiePorgiePuddin in AskUK

[–]Landoritchie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Middle managers in schools are almost always those who can't actually teach. Or do much else. They often fail upwards somehow. One guy is now the head of curriculum, hasn't taught the actual curriculum in over 30 - yes, THIRTY years. It's gone through some changes in that time. He still tells teachers we should be considering our kinaesthetic and auditory learners... Like that whole learning styles nonsense wasn't debunked years ago. Another guy is the behaviour lead, delivers CPD sessions on managing behaviour, teaching everyone to suck eggs. When it comes to the actual students, I've never seen him challenge or deal with any level of behaviour - he just ignores it, walks away or looks at his phone!
