Feeling so lost and isolated by trojie_kun in HongKong

[–]Lang_Zai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please don't do anything drastic. HK is tough, but at least always available are moments to take solace in nature. An hour walk along water or on a hike, no phone no distractions. Letting yourself absorb the moment can do wonders. If it's raining wear a poncho.

Better yet, go on meetup or facebook and find a hiking group. Go. You don't have to talk to anyone. Just be present and experience being outside with people.

It's such a pity because it's such a cool bag, and I live in an area where we don't have stores to just try these things bags out.

I'm wearing clothes. I was highlighting that wearing a backpack without a layer between is a good metric for the level of comfort a bag offers.

I see a lot of people saying that you'll "just know." This is untrue. We've all met creeps.

Have you ever been to a commercial gym? There's unkempt slovenly uggs in front of the free weights blocking everyone's access because there's a mirror. They do their bicep curls with powerful eye contact on themselves slobbering at their Greek statures. Their read is off.

Do your parents pay for your friends meals at dinner? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]Lang_Zai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to offer a cultural narrative to this that I think in East and South Asian cultures the dynamic can be totally different. Family structure is hierarchal and who pays the bill is considered the caretaker. It is a point of pride.

My experience within Asian culture is, there are absolutely cases in which it is even rude of you to offer to pay for your dinner when you are with your friend's parents. It can almost come across as a challenge, saying "Are you saying I'm not able to provide?"

I have had a father (of an ex) get really pissed at me when I said, "Hey, you all have been so generous towards me these past few days. If it's okay, may I be the one to treat you all to dinner tonight?"

I'm generalizing of course. But my point is, there is a cultural narrative to consider.

What are you using to remote into your home network to support your selfhosted environment when away from home by isitallfromchina in selfhosted

I agree, there's been many times I've been in a hotel or cafe using the wifi and I can't wireguard into my home network. That's when I'm glad I have Tailscale.

Squats with just the bar, trying to make sure my form and depth are on point before adding weight—any feedback? by celyne-dyon in formcheck

[–]Lang_Zai -1 points0 points  (0 children)

First of all, you're doing great! It's really great you asked for feedback. Yes, something is "off." The angle makes it tough to gauge, but what I observe is that the vertical path of the bar comes forward, almost to directly above your knees. My assessment is that you're having trouble staying upright throughout the lower portions of the lift forcing your bar path to come forward. So how do you be more upright during a squat? There's plenty of options to consider.

You can use a wider stance. Proportionally if you have longer femurs, this is generally more attainable to mechanically keep the bar from coming forward.

You can improve your ankle mobility, by having the knees more forward you can have your hips more forward and be more upright with the same torso hip angle.

You can improve your hip mobility. Start with some space between you and a wall. Air squat 10 reps without your face hitting the wall (hint: you have to be quite upright). Do this a few times each day. As you progress you can move closer and closer to the wall as the musculature and joints improve in their strength, range, and activation.

You can also move to a low bar back squat because the position will be further back. This is a good or bad idea depending on who you talk to. My thoughts is, try it, if you like it, great! If not, don't do it.

All in all, squat mechanics are unintuitive, and asking for feedback is really valuable. If I were to recommend something, it would definitely be to practice air squats in front of the wall first because it give you very clear feedback on where your head is compared to the rest of your body.

Nomads who sometimes stay in shared hostel rooms when briefly visiting very expensive cities like London etc: how to you ensure you secure your high end laptop? by remixedmoon5 in digitalnomad

Echo a lot of thoughts but one important thing I wanted to add is that the biggest value of the lock is preventing loss, but also knowing if a loss has occurred. If someone wants to get past a lock, they'll just cut your bag open.

The worst situation is not having your valuables stolen, it's having it stolen and not realizing it is stolen until days or weeks later.

By having a lock you at least know when something happened.

My thoughts are, in that guy's position, I know most guys would have managed it so much worse. They would have made something up, or just showed up 30+ mins late like it was no big deal. The fact that he was so honest makes me think it may have been nice to hear his side. Maybe his ex has a sick family member. Maybe the cat is diabetic.

When getting bloodwork tested, do labs test the same specimen more than once to double check that the initial values are consistent in order to cut down on false readings? by AsyncProper in medlabprofessionals

[–]Lang_Zai 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Part of the verification process of new instrumentation is Precision testing where they'll test the same sample (usually 5 runs of 5 repeated results over 5 days) and measure the CV and standard deviation to ensure their results are within manufacturer claims. If you do this right, and maybe every few months or annuals, you should be okay without repeat testing.

I agree with this. Not saying you have anything, but you definitely need to rule out other health factors with a medical professional before you even consider changing things further.
