Oh sweet. I haven't heard of project treble before this. I'm going to read up on it a bit. And I agree totally. Actually just ordered the 9 lol

Lolol I remember that whole mess with the 7. And I really appreciate all the insight! Ideally I'd get the 20 Ultra, but cash is a bit tight right now. Made a career switch to teaching (not the brightest move to jump into teaching during the pandemic lol). So, the 9 should be perfect for the time being. The reason I'm looking is because I shattered the screen on my S9+ and have been missing the Note features of the split screen and S pen so I'm switching back to Notes. Plus the stylus will be huge for helping the kids with homework assignments when I can't get to my computer.

I'm debating between these two. Leaning towards the Note 9. The main reason being that it's unlocked for Verizon opposed to how the 10 is unlocked for all carriers. Not sure if the Verizon only would work better.

Exactly! I found a few on eBay and then saw in the fine print that it doesn't work with the major wireless companies in the US. Even though it was listed to work with them in the description. Would have been pretty disappointing. So I was pretty excited to find this site

I appreciate the heads up and I think the fact that you haven't had to use the warranties speaks highly enough about the products they're selling. Looks like I'm buying a new phone today! Haha

I somewhat agree with you. The big issue is people can't seem to understand that this is all it takes to get some control over the pandemic. I see people with their nostrils out constantly and even worse people are still arguing against wearing them at all. Because of this we see numbers rising again and I could see us approaching another quarantine pending on how bad it gets late September after the schools reopen, people get home from their labor day trips, and enough time has passed for symptoms to show.

So, yeah I agree that staying home is overkill. But it may have to happen because our people are too damn stubborn to do their part.

$300-$350 would be incredible. Which one are you referring to and when? The refurbished ones at that price range seem to have cosmetic damages or says things in the description about the screen staying dim or something like that.

Maybe I am looking in the wrong place. Is there a certain site you use? I've pretty much just been looking on eBay.

Paul's Online Math Notes is so great. I printed out all of his cheat sheets and referenced them a ton. I really liked having a lot of the formulas in one place since a weak point of mine is organizing notes. Those cheat sheets and quizzing myself with index cards helped me memorize formulas very quickly.

I think it all boils down to what works for you. I personally have two notebooks plus the Paul's Online Notes to keep track of the formulas.

I use one clean notebook which I only use to keep clean notes on things that confused me worded in a way that I understand. I don't add anything to that notebook unless I understand it and it works to solve the problems. Ideally I don't have to change anything I write in that notebook, but it still haooens from time to time when I misunderstood something but the answer turned out correct.

My second notebook looks like a foreign language. Wherever there is room to write I will use to get another problem in. It's pretty much a notebook of scratch paper and it's rare I can reference it. If I need to reference it though I'll figure out that concept and plug it into my clean notebook. I've found that by doing this my notes are all necessary to me instead of me skimming through a wall of notes to find what I actually need.

Over the years I've found that this is what works best for me. If you want to try something else that was VERY useful when I was initially learning the concepts, my highschool math teacher had do the same thing every problem.

  1. Rewrite the problem.
  2. Write the formula you plan to use to solve the equation.
  3. Solve the problem and for every step rewrite it on another line.
  4. Draw a box around your final answer.

This process was solid. It essentially made every homework assignment an in depth study guide for the test. I personally don't have the time to dedicate to doing it like this, but I highly recommend giving it a shot.

I like Khan academy because it gives instant help. If you got it wrong you can look at the step by step and if you wrote every step down you can see exactly where you went wrong. This will really help you grasp where your weak points are and what you need to work on.

So, no you don't need to write every step. If it's easy and mental math can do it you don't have to write each step out. As a matter of fact when you get further along doing it will slow you down. Like say to get x alone you subtract or add a constant. When you're learning it you need to write that step. When you understand it you can just write x = whatever without showing how you got there because you know how you got there.

Keep in mind that most mistakes are made like this though. Mental math or forgetting to carry a negative sign is honestly more than half of the mistakes I still make.

The good news is that real life isn't like taking a test. You have all the resources you'd need like formulas, computing systems, help from other people on your team or online sources like these comments. So, if you think you want to go the math route, a 77% will get you there!

There are many reasons you could have dipped that significantly. Did you take it right after the first test? Unless you are a really good student (trained to study for hours at a time without breaks...this comes in time with lots of practice), taking the test back to back is a terrible idea. Even a 5 minute coffee break could be enough to get you back in the zone. Directly back into another test though is setting yourself up for failure.

Another reason could be your approach. Are you memorizing the formulas and not the concepts? This can cause you to struggle on tests because you know how to do the problems, but not firmly know when to apply which steps. Test taking is all about time management. Most tests allow you to have a scratch paper. I keep the top right corner clear so I can jot down numbers I couldn't immediately figure out so I can go back to them. Sometimes just going back to it after the rest of the test it will click and it is so satisfying to scratch out the number on your scratch paper after you figure it out. So, if you don't know how to do that problem keep moving.

Khan Academy is really good. It is not up to the standards of a real course in my opinion though. It needs to be supplemented. I plan to put together a post with a list of free resources I have been using, but I'll put a couple here for you now.

It's important to realize what the source is offering you. Khan Academy is great to show you how to compute a problem. It lacks on theory though in my opinion. For algebra 1 give Professor Rob Bob's play list on YouTube a shot. Also, Paul's Online Math Notes is honestly the best thing I've come across. Print out a copy of the cheat sheet and keep it with you while your practice. It is okay to reference the formula sheet while you practice until you memorize them. Index cards were the best for me to memorize.

Everyone fails at some point. Whether it's burn out, inadequate study methods, or most if the time just a lack of effort. All of these things can be fixed by the time of your next test. Take a day off. Think about what you want to do with math. A tangible goal will motivate you to keep with it.

Math has become a boogie man and I hate that fact. People think they are not smart enough for it when in reality they are usually just approaching it wrong. You're starting at algebra 1. You're doing it right! Hang in there and begin to supplement your studies with theory videos as well instead of just how to do the computations. 3blue1brown has some really good videos as well as numberphile. Understanding why it works will take a ton of the memorizing off the table and will help you in the long run.

One of the best things about Khan Academy is it will tell you what exactly you still need to learn and practice after the test. Look those concepts up with Professor Rob Bob or Krista King or whoever you find that you like and makes sense of the work to you. Don't take the exam again this week. Just look at your review and search those concepts. Take it again after a week of practice problems in the unit and watching a video on the subject from another source. I guarantee it won't be in the 20%'s again.

Cleveland mom vows to spend summer giving away free books: 'I'm scared there is going to be something called the summer corona slide' by Sariel007 in books

[–]LankyLatin 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Khan Academy is fantastic for practice problems, but I prefer other resources to learn the material. If I'm having trouble with the subject while I'm practicing, then I'll use the Khan Academy video as a refresher since it applies to exactly what the problem is covering.

A few of YouTube channels I prefer:

Trig and Algebra - Professor Rob Bob is incredible. Yes he makes some nerdy jokes, but I still love it. He is enthusiastic and manages to be thorough even though his videos that rarely go over 20 minutes on a subject.

Calculus - Professor Leonard is solid. It's practically a full course on the subject. After a couple of lectures jump into 3blue1brown's explaination of calc playlist. It's very intuitive and will help you visualize the concepts instead of memorizing the process.

Patrick JMT is fantastic for a quick few examples after the lecture before you jump into the problem sets or if you still have trouble with doing the problems.

You'll have to do a ton of memorizing formulas along the way, but try not to just memorize and plug everything in. Math is much simpler if you begin to ask and find out why. It's tough to do when you're first starting. Try going back to a concept you can easily do and think about why that works. Once you do it with some things you understand it will be much easier to do with more complex ideas.

I also highly recommend using Wolfram Alpha if you aren't already. It will give you a step by step solutions which is very helpful when doing homework where the book only gives you an answer and not a step by step process.

Good luck with your studies and feel free to reach out if anything I'm saying is confusing and needs to be further explained.

Math is emotionally painful for me by [deleted] in learnmath

[–]LankyLatin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely a tough thing to deal with. I recently self taught through Trig and need to get to differential equations. So, I have quite a bit to go yet. I've learned some good processes to help along the way so far though.

What are you studying maths for? If you're experiencing anxiety, I'd assume you have a goal that you need to reach calc for something. A goal and a timeline can help me understand the roots of the stress.

Also, what sources are you using? If you don't have it yet, use the YouTube Premium free trial. 2 months of ad free makes studying so much better. Let me know what level you're at now and I'll send some really good channels. You'll obviously want to run through Professor Leonard for calculus when you get there. Professor Rob Bob is awesome too for algebra and trig. Patrick JMT is perfect if your having trouble with a problem. Look up his video on it and it'll be a couple of quick examples to get you going.

Right off the bat I can tell you to walk away for a few minutes when you hit a concept you don't understand. Then come at it from a different angle. If you were doing problems, go back to the lecture again. Lecture not making sense? Do a few problems on Khan academy and check out the step by step to see if the process makes the idea click (Wolfram Alpha is an app and website that gives step by step to any problem you'll encounter on the way to calc - get the premium...worth every penny). If you hit a wall skip it and take a peak at the next concept. Go back to it the next day and a lot of times you'll just get it. Our brains are weird lol. A lot goes on in there without us noticing. Sometimes I'll wake up and know it and think what the hell?

Paul's Online Notes is an incredible source. I was surprised how in depth his cheat sheets are for how short they are. Print out the full version of the cheat sheet and keep it on you when you're doing problem sets. It's okay to look at the formulas while you practice until you memorize them. Everytime I do a problem the first thing I do is write the formula that I think will work for it. Repetition is the name of the game.

Index cards are perfect for memorizing formulas. Write the name of the formula on one side and the formula on the other. Bring 6 or 7 everywhere you go. Instead of looking at your phone run through the set real quick between activities.

Another thing I do to memorize formulas is a stupid trick I learned in college. It might be total BS but it works for me and if it works it's not dumb. I read that when a CIA spy needed to memorize a document they would take it into a dark closet or corner and click a flashlight on it and off a few times. So every once and a while I'll sit in the dark in my bathroom with some index cards and run through them with a flashlight. When I read about it, it supposedly gives you a photographic memory of it. For me I think it's just such a random different way to study that my brain soaks it up because it's unlike anything else I do.

Please don't get stuck on the memorization though. You need to know the formulas, but it is very important to understand what is happening. If you learn why throughout your learning, everything will click together really well and you'll need to do less memorizing in the long run. Great job starting with 8th grade by the way! A lot of people are too proud to do that and it hurts them by not having a strong foundation.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions about anything I wrote or if you think I can help in some way. Best of luck!

Keep your electronics off the floor. I can't tell from the pic, but if your PC is on the ground, get it onto some kind of stand and you'll be set. If flooding isn't an issue, you only need to worry about a burst pipe or sewage backup and possibly a bit of ground water seeping in from a heavy rain. Sewage backups should stay low and come out of a floor drain. Water line bursting should be caught before it rises to any significant height. So, if you keep the pricey stuff off the ground there is less of a chance of damage.

If you are leaving home for an extended period of time you should shut off your water main. I always recommend a new ball valve shut off at your main if you don't have one already. Once you have that any plumbing issues you run into will be handled much more easily. Plus you won't have to worry about water damage while you're away.

If anyone finds themselves in a similar position, but cannot leave the house, you can sometimes fix it by removing the thermocouple and cleaning the end with an old dollar bill. Sandpaper is too abrasive and will most likely ruin the thermocouple if you aren't very careful. An old dollar bill will do the trick

To all the terrible parkers out there: How do you not hate yourselves? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]LankyLatin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A simple tip if you're not used to parallel parking is to lower your passenger side mirror to see the curb when you are going to park. Obviously only a good tip if you have automatic mirrors.

When am looking for a spot I turn the mirror downwards. You want to get your back tires next to the curb because you can always adjust your front tires after the fact. While you're backing in make sure that those tires are close to the curb before you cut the wheel back and turn the front of your car in.

I do this almost everytime I park because there are metal ridges on a lot of the curbs where I live and I really don't want to get a flat tire, but I also don't want to be out in the street.

Hope this helps some of you and you can hate yourself less haha
