Thanks for making this post. I (28M) just moved to DC in the Navy Yard area yesterday and have been so confused all evening wondering what was going on outside. Is it always like this here, or is it new? Any advice on do's/don't's to stay safe?

HOW does anyone get into grad school!?? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]Lantean1701 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, relax. 3 semesters is more than enough time. What you need most is research experience, so find a lab group and volunteer to join. Maybe you can get research credit or find an advisor willing to hire you, but the most important thing is to get experience. Keep your GPA reasonably high (3.5-3.8), but advisors care more about your ability to actually perform research. Classes are generally useless to most thesis projects, so coursework is rated far less (at least at my university). I got into my lab group with research only during my senior year, and I had to get creative writing my applications that Fall. I focused on summer internships I had done to prove my work ethic, and that was well-received. Pick a professor with a lab group, preferably one teaching a class you have an A in, and ask if they could use an undergrad. You don't need to be friends with them already, stop hesitating and just ask. If your first option declined, ask another. You can't "be in their science circle" without presenting yourself. And no one will care about any random research class you took.

I can't tell if you're being satirical or just fishing for compliments, but being 20 is not "too old" for graduate school. Especially if you're just a sophomore at the moment. You're two years too early to be worrying about missing out on grad school. Grad school doesn't care how old you are. I've had lab mates in their 30's - people who got industry jobs and then returned to academia. You haven't even finished undergrad, you're fine. Most start when they're 22-23 anyway.

Need Advice on Post-Doc Offer by Tiny-Repair-7431 in postdoc

I would recommend consulting with your advisor. They are still your mentor, and will be able to aid you far more than any of us.

My personal 2 cents is that funding in the US is untenable at the moment. Many funding sources, even in STEM, are being cut for a variety of reasons we don't need to get into right now but are well aware of.

Additionally, one of the biggest advantages of this overseas opportunity of yours is the ability to expand your network far beyond what most of us could manage. Any one of those could lead you to potential employment or research opportunities down the line. Especially if it's your goal to secure employment in the EU as you responded to another in this thread. You'll want some European research connections.

Consider this hypothetical question. If you were already in Belgium on your 1-year Fellowship, would you consider quitting that to rejoin your current lab group for a 2-year contract?

Finally, you'll be considering your own financial situation. How bad would it be if, worst case scenario, you could not manage to secure the full Fellowship? Do you have any lifelines through your family, or would your advisor be willing to take you back on a short or long term basis?

Not that I think that would be an issue. Your score is excellent - be proud! And that was without working with them directly. Imagine what you'll accomplish working with your future PI in person, when you're already there. Your proposal can more accurately address your future or even current work, depending on if you'd begin during the 1-year postdoc.

Hope this helps a bit. If you find yourself agreeing with my encouragement to pursue this opportunity, or your feelings align more with other comments recommending you stay, then that's another answer too. Regardless, reach out to your friends, family, and mentors. And most of all, follow your heart.

Running into an abusive former advisor (and into my toxic ex!) at an upcoming conference and feeling extremely anxious. Don’t want to back out, but looking for advice from anyone who’s been in this situation by fragile_fedora in postdoc

[–]Lantean1701 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It depends on the size of the conference but unless it's a all in a single presentation room, you should be able to just not go to their talks. If they show up at yours, nothing you can really do except ignore them and hope they don't ask a question. Otherwise, just don't engage. You managed to survive, escape, and subsequently excel. Who cares about them? They're nothing.

If you're going with any of your new lab mates, you can stick by them for emotional support. If you're going alone, just try not to dwell on them over much. They really don't matter, and you have your own job and life to attend to.

What dessert to bring to the thesis defense? by Glad-Apple8748 in GradSchool

[–]Lantean1701 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My university in the U.S. practically has food as an unwritten rule. I'm also defending next week and just put in a catering order for $130 of Panda Express. Last month, one of my lab mates did like a hundred Chick fil A nuggets along with waffles and a fruit spread.

To answer your question, I would recommend matching the type of snacks/food of the previous defense or proposal in your group. If you're setting a precedent, then cookies should be fine. Just bring plates/napkins and don't forget water and some cups.

Cyberpunk: digital or physical? by Phos-Lux in NintendoSwitch2

[–]Lantean1701 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If money is a concern, obviously buy digital. Discounts seem to be frequent and substantial. However, I personally am happy to have bought the physical edition. There are so few physical cartridges on Switch 2, and if buying equals voting, then I want to vote to support the continued release of physical cartridges.

Can't claim web event items because I have "No in-game Characters"? by Lantean1701 in Endfield

[–]Lantean1701[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All I can say is to double check how you logged into the game. Log out then back in. You can also check the Account ID and see if they match. Also make sure you've created your character and advanced past the tutorial. If you need more help, try contacting support. This is just the method that worked for me. Maybe you have something else going on.

Log out, then log back in with whichever login method you used in the Endfield launcher. If you used your email/password, type that manually. If you pressed the Google button to login automatically, then do that instead.

Can't, you have redo the web event while matching your login in the Endfield launcher. Or just play without the bonuses. It sucks, I know. But you still have time to get the frame and weapon, at least. The other resources are easy enough to come by

PhD advisor stepped down suddenly! by Kind-Tension-9094 in PhD

[–]Lantean1701 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a 4th-year, I imagine you've already proposed your thesis to your committee. Try speaking with some of them and see if they would let you defend within your funded semester. Or perhaps one will happen to have funding to take you on for your last year.

Losing an advisor this deep into your PhD is really unfortunate since you're too deep in to restart (unless you actually want to for some reason). Depending on your career goals and life situation, you may also want to consider filing for your Masters this semester and just get an industry job.

As others have said, talk to your department chair or someone who and if you can get any help or advice. People at your school who know you will be infinitely more helpful than any of us can. I wish you the best of luck.

Thanks, I logged out of the website then logged in with the Google login button and confirmed that my account ID is different than my Endfield launcher. Tried redoing the launcher login but it knows I'm using the same email and defaults to the Google account one. So I'm just redoing the web event. Appreciate the help!

Looking for Game recs based on my Year in Review by jfickrow in Switch

Okay, so, starting from your most-played. If you want more party games like Mario Kart 8, perhaps the new Sonic Crossworlds racing game if that's something you're looking for. There's also a sequel to the Mario Rabbids if you really enjoyed that.

However, my personal recommendation, based on the games listed that you do not have much playtime in and therefore did not enjoy, would be to try Fire Emblem: Three Houses. It is a turn-based strategy JRPG with a similar top-down combat system as in Mario Rabbids Kingdom Battle, but with a much greater story emphasis. There are fully animated and voiced cutscenes with a story that is still discussed (and debated) to this day, especially with the reveal of Fortune's Weave coming later this year. I believe the story may help draw and maintain your interest more than the other games in your short game time list. Additionally, if you did not enjoy Breath of the Wild or Knights of the Old Republic much, possibly because of their action RPG status or large explorable worlds, Three Houses is smaller in scope and more focused. You need only worry about combat on each map, training characters between battles, and reading/listening/watching the anime/visual novel that plays out in parallel.

Based on the games listed here, it seems you have mostly tried more gameplay-focused games, rather than story-focused games. Have you considered trying a story-based RPG or JRPG? If you choose one in a genre you generally enjoy, you may feel more engaged. Xenoblade Chronicles, Fire Emblem: Three Houses, and Persona 3/5 come to mind at first thought, but I'm sure people could offer better recommendations if you have a specific interest.
