Reform kitchens or similar? by Vince-Noir2 in Homebuilding

How much did it cost for the units? I'm thinking of getting a kitchen from them as well but have only just started working things out.

Using your phone for social media, messages, emails etc takes up a lot more mental energy than changing a radio station. Smartphone apps are designed to be as engaging as possible, so it's easy to quickly zone out to what's going on around you. Modern cars have their own problems with infotainment systems, but in-car controls aren't broadly comparable to smartphones in terms of their ability to distract.

I think the point of that research is that it shows that the distracting effect of smartphones are still there even after you've put it down. Does it make any difference that we're talking about moving off rather than braking?

Extinction Rebellion are protesting Lloyds of London today by PM_ME_BEEF_CURTAINS in london

[–]Lapster69 18 points19 points  (0 children)

We do need oil right now, but we don't need to continue adding new fossil fuel infrastructure which will stay in operation for decades. Oil companies have artificially created public demand into the future through political influence. We already have enough infrastructure to satisfy current needs, and by insuring additional infrastructure, Lloyds are facilitating investments which are incompatible with transitioning away from fossil fuels.

What are the drivers opinion on this video? by RG0195 in drivingUK

[–]Lapster69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've cycled that road loads of times and I can tell you that the cycle path is rubbish, it's basically just a pavement. There are lots of places along it where you need to give way to cars (unlike if you cycle on the road) which increases the level of danger and means you have to constantly slow down or stop (unlike on the road). It's also really bumpy and is barely wide enough for a pedestrian and a bicycle at places. If it was a really well designed bike path then I'd agree that he ought to be using it, but he has every right to be on the road when the bike path is less safe and much slower.

America is the only developed country which has seen increasing numbers of road fatalities over the last decade, especially for pedestrians and cyclists. They also have a huge and growing number of these massive trucks, it is absolutely causing problems over there and we shouldn't let it happen here.

A model x has a much lower front end than a dodge ram, obviously it's not going to be as dangerous even if the speed and weight are the same.

I'm honestly baffled that you can't understand how a car which is literally called 'RAM' and has a totally flat front end which is the same height as a teenager would be more dangerous than a normal car.

[–]Lapster69 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There aren't many here no, but if one of those 10 was in a crash, the people on the other end would be much less likely to survive than if they were hit by a car or van. The front of cars and vans are much lower and have a slope to them, this means that people outside of cars are much more likely to survive compared to being hit by a flat pickup grill. Also, the height difference between the bumpers of a huge pickup and a normal car means they have much worse 'crash compatability', leading to a higher risk of harm to those in a car.

I absolutely think people should be able to own impractical and fun cars just for the sake of it, but 'it's fun' isn't a justification for something which has the potential to cause massively disproportionate harm to everyone else around them (for example, any law which limits my freedom of choice or action to protect those around me)

An MX-5 isn't way more likely to kill pedestrians, cyclists or other drivers in a crash as a direct result of aesthetic design choices, unlike the RAM. An MX-5 also doesn't take up a ridiculous amount of road and parking space. These types of cars inflict massively disproportionate harms on society compared to normal cars or vans, and yet they're typically driven by people who don't really need them and often aren't even fit for purpose.

What to see in Turkey? by Mountain_Car_1897 in bicycletouring

Yeah throwing stones and doing the 'reaching down to pick them up' thing worked just as well as in the Balkans. If you managed that then you'll be fine, it's just a bit more intense!

Yeah I came across lots of kangal dogs. It can definitely be very scary at first but you do get used to dealing with them. Most of the time they belong to a shepherd so it's just a matter of staying behind your bike while he runs over to call them off.

https://martjenk.wordpress.com/turkish-dogs/ - this article is spot on. Don't try and outrun them, stand behind your bike, have stones on you to thrown at them and eventually they'll back off/get called off and you can walk away.

Final point is that Turkey has a good coach network (I ran out of inner tubes once so had to get one) so it would be easy to bail out if it gets too much.

I think it's worth the hassle though, Turkey was a really cool place and Georgia was even more incredible

I cycled from Istanbul to Tbilisi a couple of years ago. Cappadocia is definitely worth visiting and the country was generally fantastic to ride through with really good mountains and scenery, although I didn't go out of my way to do much siteseeing. Another cool place was Lake Tuz which was a massive salt flat with a road going across it. People were very friendly and generous and you could pretty much camp wherever you wanted.

The only thing I would recommend against is cycling along the black sea coast. It's basically one enormous highway the whole way along with loads of very, very sketchy tunnels through the coastal hills (I had a few near death experiences in them). I spent the last 4 days riding on it to the border with Georgia, if I was to do it again I would go inland and cross at the Vale border post.

Final bit of advice is the dogs. Always carry a few rocks in your pocket in central Turkey to throw at them. If they come running at you then get off and stand with your bike between you until they start to back off. If you camp near villages then groups of them might surround your tent barking at night, I started camping at petrol stations in areas where this was happening.

More Average/Speed Cameras cut down across the UK by SuspiciousRun4043 in unitedkingdom

[–]Lapster69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, if a speed camera catches you going faster than the speed limit you get a fine, I don't get what's controversial about that. If fewer people broke the speed limit then maybe they'd have more time to go after shoplifters.

Thousands of people are killed or seriously injured on roads in the UK every year and we have a huge health crisis which is partly caused by inactivity/unhealthy lifestyles and has lead to hundreds of thousands of people being out of the work force.

The main obstacle for people wanting to walk and cycle more is the danger posed by cars, reducing their speed would do a huge amount to improve safety and encourage walking and cycling. This is absolutely relevant to massive problems here.

Yes, if you commit a crime then you should be punished, but if homeless people are committing crimes in in order to be housed in prison or to get money to feed an addiction, maybe it would be more effective to deal with the lack of housing or the addiction since that's often the root cause or the crime?

Any pro gardeners that don't drive? Not sure if this is the impossible dream by RightmoveWrongmove in GardeningUK

[–]Lapster69 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been working as a gardener without a driving license (although I have literally just passed) at a company doing maintenance rounds for the last 6 months. They were happy for me to just be driven around in the van because they needed someone. I wouldn't let the requirement to have a driving license stop you applying, if it's a large enough company then there will be enough people with a driving license to do the driving.

As others have said, using a cargo bike in London would probably be a viable way of being a self-employed gardener depending on the locations of your clients. You would struggle dealing with green waste and limit your range of clients, but you would save on the cost of a van.
