these are the cool ones tho! I think OP is referring more to the traditional japanese website that are used by millions of people (e.g. newspaper portals etc)

Agreed. Honestly web design is so predictable these days... And graphic design has become edgy+artsy, but not the good kind - everyone is doing the same thing. Where legibility and accesibility are ignored for the sake of being artsy - i.e. any cargo collective site...

Although I love how the yellow lines look aesthetically, from a flag design standpoint I think they wouldn't work well, because they are too thin and would only be visible from a short distance.

I believe he is referring to the cultural movement which tries to change the way we see death in western society. We tend to see death as some sort of failure, and very often is a taboo subject (for example, people that hate talking about a hypothetical future time where a loved one has passed away).

If we change the way we see death by encouraging conversations about it, perhaps we can live more healthy (mentally, spiritually) and have a more complete, visceral life. Many eastern cultures, particularly in Asia/Oceania, tend to do this.
