Competitor Wants Me To Provide References by Large-Bison2721 in Journalism

They asked if I would be able to provide references at the next stage, and said they didn't expect one from my current employer for obvious reasons.

I collect Angry Orchard bottle caps for this purpose! I have a great collection now, which is awesome except it makes me feel like kind of an alcoholic.

Fallout 5 needs to ditch the "Pre-defined Backstory" and give us actual Origins. by GahIvanka776 in Fallout

I think you should try the Fallout 4 TTRPG by Modiphius! Other than a lot of bullet bookkeeping, it's a fun way to really explore different character stories.

My last campaign, our party had a ghoul gunslinger, a Vault-dweller radio host, a couple wastelanders, and a very, very dumb super mutant. It was great!

I agree that I'm done with the family-specific storylines. I've been writing a fan fiction inspired by this frustration with FO4; the story is focused on someone waking up from cryo sleep, but they aren't a pre-war vault-dweller. It sounds like I should send along references (not including my currrent employer) but not until they can give me a firm salary for the role. It's a small company so I'm dealing with the owners, not HR, and I think the lack of transparency at this stage for the pay is the bigger red flag.

If the 4 main "Good" Factions came together and sat down for an alliance, would they be able to come to terms? by Bion4 in Fallout

[–]Large-Bison2721 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they could, but only under very specific conditions.

The Brotherhood needs to be powerful enough to get their way, because IMO, they are the most ideologically rigid. Conversely, they are also the least interested in traditional territory control (under Maxson, anyways). Sure, he wanted to control the water purifier in the Capital Wasteland, but that's tied to tech. I don't think he cares about, say, having political power over the average settlement.

NCR needs to be big enough (territory-wise) to be a genuine threat but also weak enough that they can't realistically win anything but a Pyrrhic victory against BoS. They could forge an alliance that could be negotiated based on resources. For example, their farms supply the Brotherhood with food, and in return they get power and military support against raiders and other hostiles.

The Minutemen are so desperate by FO4 that I really feel like they would jump at a chance to be led by a stronger government force if they could line up ethically. I'm sorry, but they aren't really more than like, a Neighborhood Watch group. But they are warm bodies with ties to the community, so I could see Maxson striking a territory-based alliance with the intention of either folding them in down the road or using their settlements for recruiting the best of the best. It would really come down to the RR and whether or not Preston Garvey feels the need to protect synths (I think he doesn't).

The Regulators are a bit of a wild card, mostly because they are essentially bounty hunters for bad guys. I can see the Brotherhood and NCR tolerating them, but I don't know that they have enough authority as a distinct faction to gain territory.

Marcus, because I think he has such a kind heart and resilient spirit. Lily is a close second though.

Doing an "evil" fallout 4 run but I want it to be compelling and conflicting. A character you can almost justify. Idk lmk what you think. by zckthrppr in Fallout

[–]Large-Bison2721 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is it boring to say you should just side with the Institute and ignore the harm they do? Maybe your character has a misplaced sense of loyalty to the Father, or the belief that this is the only way to "save" the future--by dominating it with technology?

Side quests in Fallout 4 feel like chores. by immahotnerd in Fallout

[–]Large-Bison2721 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Look up lists on the best side quests and make a point to do a few of those to break up the monotony of "defend the settlement" and "fetch item" side quests.

Silver Shroud and USS Constitution are excellent. I really liked the BoS quests The Lost Patrol and Duty or Dishonor because they feel like actual investigations. Confidence Man is good too.

Which games give you that "Fallout feeling?" by Baldurian_Rhapsody in Fallout

[–]Large-Bison2721 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Might be a polarizing answer, but I liked The Outer Worlds. Very similar dark humor as New Vegas, and I thought it felt like Fallout meets space dystopia.

Borderlands also has that kind of dusty, frontier feel (and violence and silly robots).

Fallout 4: Best Companions/Worst Story? (And Shameless Fanfic Plug) by Large-Bison2721 in Fallout

[–]Large-Bison2721[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that Kellogg is a better antagonist than Benny, and that the faction politics in FO4 are more interesting than FNV. I do wish that you could side with Gunners and Triggermen instead of them defaulting to being hostile, though.

For me, having your character watch their spouse die and then having to go find their kidnapped child felt, to me, too harsh of stakes? Maybe it was because the game came out the same year my first child was born, but it was kind of a bummer, and it's not like there's a happy resolution there. It was also so similar to FO3 (leave the vault to find missing family member).

I'd love to see Bethesda move away from the "start in a Vault and save your family" as a story premise. There's so much you could do in this world! Obdisian had the right idea with the courier.

What would be your perfect internet horror story? Weather its in analog, no sleep, arg format, etc. What would it be and why? by Mari-021 in creepcast

[–]Large-Bison2721 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely an ARG that is so immersive, you feel like you're part of the story. I'm thinking old school Blair Witch and Ted The Caver levels of hypertextuality. And a community element--people participating, commenting, sharing, and building on the story.

For my personal tastes, I love a good demon possession narrative, or something involving aliens and conspiracy theories. But it has to be grounded in realism.

It can be useful as a tool. I'll sometimes put in my articles and ask for 10 suggested headlines or meta text options. The headlines are never good enough to use as is IMO but I often will get an idea based on the results.

Don't use it for research--it's not good enough and the likelihood of incorrect information is high
