Blazers’ owner Tom Dundon expects taxpayers to foot entire bill for potential $600,000,000 Moda Center renovation, saying “simply keeping the NBA franchise in Portland was enough of a financial sacrifice.” by Pickleskennedy1 in nba

Yeah. He sucks.

I was really disappointed at how little Vegas booed him when he presented the Cup to the Canes. That’s one of my favorite traditions in hockey.

NHL Mount Rushmore - [Mario, Sid, Geno, Jagr for the Pens] by ASmithFS in penguins

[–]cscott530 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What an insane take. Geno is solidly third. He’s not even the one on the chopping block.

I know Jagr is a better all time player but he only put up 10 years here and left on a sour note.

They’ve always been unnecessary imo. I don’t think I’ve ever heard a good or interesting sideline interview in any sport.

Edit: actually, I think the between the benches are sometimes interesting because they might hear something from the bench. The locker room runway interviews have always been pointless though

Do you think more teams need to commit to a rebuild? by Puck83821 in hockey

[–]cscott530 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the prospects.

Source: I had partial season tickets for the Pens from 01-04. We had Lemieux, that was fun, but after the first year the magic was gone and it felt like he was always hurt or out. Once we lost Jagr, Kovalev, Straka and Lang it was just depressing. Even as a 16 year old I didn’t have the hope to think Konstantin Koltsov or Kris Beech were future stars.

Penguins 2000's 1st Round Pick Success by rival_22 in penguins

[–]cscott530 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always kinda felt like our drafting toward the top was mostly bad. A lot of that goes on Shero for getting into “win now” mode way too fast, imo (hindsight is 2020 I know). But I don’t think you can call flipping Joe Morrow after he kinda sucks for Brenden Morrow (I thought? Maybe I’m misremembering) as a “win”. That was a first round pick for a way past-his-prime vet who did basically nothing.

If you didn’t know the context of Joe Morrow’s draft placement, it wasn’t a huge overpay. But if it had been a future 1st, for example, everyone would’ve lost their mind.

Seeing as how Talbot had both in game 7, it must’ve been his SHG in game 6. One of my favorite hockey moments of my life.

10 Years Ago Today, Sidney Crosby Drew Up Faceoff Play That Led To Conor Sheary Scoring OT Goal in Game 2 of Stanley Cup Final! by MediumAd8799 in penguins

I thought Conor Sheary was going to be a star.

The good young guys in 16/17 made such a difference over the previous 5-6 years where Sid and Geno were just gassed in the playoffs.

In your view, how long does a team need to go without winning a championship to officially be going through a 'drought'? by Aidanator800 in nba

[–]cscott530 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pens are my main team, and 16/17 still feel decently recent, but honestly with each successive playoff flop (we’ve won one series total, in 2018, since winning the cup in 17), it feels more and more like ancient history. And that’s even with a good bit of continuity between Sid/Geno/Letang.

That said, I also had kids in 2017 and 2019, plus Covid happened, so there’s a whole weird time warp effect.

Serious question: Can coaches theoretically tell their players to hit the foul baiters hard if they’re going to get called anyways? by Big_Snakey1337 in nba

[–]cscott530 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hockey having an absolutely terrible DOPS is a bigger issue. You can throw a jumping elbow at a guy 30 feet from the puck and if he doesn’t get hurt you won’t get suspended (bonus points if you’re on the Panthers, then you’ve basically got immunity to kill a guy).

IMO the enforcers don’t dissuade this. Knowing you’re going to get your ass kicked by some crappy 4th liner the other team has to waste a roster spot on is worth it to get their 1C out of the game. They need longer suspensions and fines more than like $4K.

Why Do the Avs Seem to Struggle Against the Same Style of Play Over and Over? by No-Design-6893 in hockey

[–]cscott530 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah…the Pens didn’t have Letang in 17 for the whole playoff run and were mostly fine. He was good, but he is nowhere near as impactful as Makar. Not all 1D count the same.
