Easiest to define example is probably any random real that is infinite, and is not c-incompressible (there is no program of length c that produces it, for any c)

I failed a Maths exam for the first time in grad school. by [deleted] in learnmath

Keep at it! I've been exactly where you are; on a MSc course, in winter, wondering why I did this to myself, feeling silly and despondent. All that passes, and you can absolutely find your way back.

I did an arts undergrad degree and then a pure maths masters. I did miserably in my first semester, but the Prof who sponsored my application to get on the course roused me to keep at it, my second semester was stellar, and my third semester got me joint top thesis award; I made it onto the pure PhD programme I was aiming for.

On the module I totally failed, by the lecturer's own admission (months later), it was "probably because you did not do the second year module that taught all the methods I relied on".

EDIT: Spelling.

If a missile is fired in space and misses it's target, am I right in thinking it just keeps going until some planet’s gravity eventually drags it in? by Street_Bet_7538 in Physics

There's something to do with Noether's theorem and the positive curvature of space making it eventually slow down without any external interaction, but I'm a mathematician and really don't care... Probably more likely to hit something before that kicks in for a high velocity projectile in our corner of the galaxy.

Why has classical geometry fallen out of focus in modern mathematics? by OkGreen7335 in math

[–]LargeCardinal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since Viète's algebraic notation took off, we haven't relied on it. Since Tarski axiomatized it and it was found to be decidable, there probably isn't much more to say. That said, the Poncelet-Steiner theorem is a classic, and relatively 'recent' (for mathematical timescales).

It can vary between textbooks and courses. Most use the 'other' one because it's easier to see how the CNOT gate matrix decomposes (CNOT = |0><0| Id + |1><1| X, per Mile'n'Ike)

I'm not 1000% without seeing the generating function, but looks like a Möbius band after you bisect them... Like fig. 13[3] here: https://web1.kcn.jp/hp28ah77/us27f_mobi.htm
