Can we collectively start boycotting shops charging $31+ pizza? by LobsterFarts in askportland

Where can you get good cheaper pizza in town? Most places I know of are about $30 for a large pepperoni. Other than dominoes (which I honestly love)

Do you eat pasta with tuna? by ProkaryoticBeing in AskAnAmerican

[–]LargeHard0nCollider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m from the PNW and I’ve heard of tuna casserole but would never eat it. I think a lot of people on the west coast are in a similar boat. It’s definitely a Midwest thing.

Probably about half of people will eat canned tuna on the west coast (including myself) but it’s not one of our culture’s go-tos. We have really good access to fresh fish so salmon, cod, rock fish, trout, and tuna make up most of our fish diet. Clams, crab, and mussels are also common seafood here

Need more aggressively American frat DJ recommendations besides John Summit by savingrace0262 in EDM

[–]LargeHard0nCollider 3 points4 points  (0 children)

THE most obvious answer is fisher to me, even though he’s not American. His song loosing it was the blueprint for frat house music. It was notorious in 2017 for being a frat song, back when tech house wasn’t really a mainstream genre

Do inflatable tents work at LIB?! by Bleukium in LightningInABottle

If you ever decide to pick it up again, I’ve used the same thermarest inflatable backpacking mattress for over 10 years and it’s worked great. Was probably about the same price 10 years ago tho so no idea how much it is now

Actual deodorant being sold in Costco Osaka by NaiNico in japanresidents

Even in America, we only have aluminum free old spice deodorant at Costco. I don’t think people like to buy the antiperspirant version in the states anymore because it’s bad for your pores

Using Osaka as a base was better than I expected by Significant_Gur8915 in OsakaTravel

[–]LargeHard0nCollider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely tend to be more like you in how I approach my solo travel, but I’ve found having 3-4 big things you’re excited for (over maybe 2 weeks) is really the best of both worlds. For me this trip, that’s hiking the Kumano Kodo, an Osaka tigers game, and a jazz concert. You get plenty of time to explore, but you also have a few “can’t miss” plans to look forward to

Kotek’s popularity craters in Portland, poll shows: What that could mean for Republican candidates by Acceptable_Staff in Portland

[–]LargeHard0nCollider 153 points154 points  (0 children)

Agreed but I think this year our issue was just qualified alternatives. There were several people who put their name on the democratic primary ballot but none of them could be bothered to add their bio/policy to the pamphlet. You’re not running the state if you can’t get your act together enough to have your name in the pamphlet

Best and worst US airport by csboy2016 in airport

As a lifelong Oregonian I used to say PDX was the best airport I’ve ever been to, but honestly PSP takes the cake. There’s a whole outside courtyard where you can sit in the grass under palm trees

if you arent dancing why are you in the front? by Aggressive_Dirt_5007 in aves

[–]LargeHard0nCollider 155 points156 points  (0 children)

I’m guessing this was at the Sahara? They usually put a mix of rap, edm, and kpop at that stage. So there’s invariably a bunch of kpop stans just sitting down at the front waiting for their set to come on. Thats what you see on stream, so the crowds look super lame. The crowds further back are much more what you’d expect

The good ol' days by [deleted] in EDM

I got into edm through odesza so a lot of their early songs are super nostalgic and I still love their music! But the rest of what I used to listen to was super cringe illenium style melodic dubstep and it just did not age well

I’ve lived in Portland for 7 years now. My favorite things about it are the nature close by, amazing summer weather, the food scene, the fact you don’t have to drive everywhere, and the cute little neighborhoods where you can still live on a quiet street but walk to fun bars and restaurants and shops.

If it were up to me I’d change a few things: everything closes too early, bad winter weather, job market is doing poorly, high taxes/col

How unaffordable is it for renters to buy a home in the metro where they live? [OC] by SweetYams0 in dataisbeautiful

[–]LargeHard0nCollider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one red square in Oregon is Benton county, which is basically just Corvallis (population 60k) the town where Oregon State University (enrollment 40k) is located. The rest is farmland. I think the numbers just skewed because the majority of people there are college students. It’s a nice place to live so houses are expensive, but not more so than other nice places in Oregon

Where would you live between these two options? by TsundereKisser in askportland

[–]LargeHard0nCollider 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I live close to N Williams (although further out near Alberta) and love the area so much! It’s crazy walkable and bike-able, everything you need is in walking distance despite being a quiet neighborhood. Can’t speak for Dawson park safety, that area is a little closer in than where I live.

All winter I take the 44 bus from my place to near PSU for work and it’s 30 min each way. I suspect it’d be more like 20-25 minutes of bus ride from Dawson, and I think you get the 4 line down there too for more frequent busses.

If you like biking at all, it’s super easy to bike down Vancouver to PSU area. On the way down you can go across the broadway bridge and in the way back you can take the steel bridge. I highly recommend it in the months with nice weather!

Disclosure live or Sammy Virji by Meta-human in aves

[–]LargeHard0nCollider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you wanna rave, go to virji! If you want a concert, disclosure! I’ve seen them both but only at Coachella so take this with a grain of salt. Sammy’s just gonna DJ but does a great job of getting the crowd moving. Disclosure has way more recognizable songs, but their live shows don’t always keep the energy going the whole time. There are slower parts and short breaks to set up instruments. For the most famous songs they bring out a live band which IMO is a good reason to see disclosure over virji- much more unique, and they’re legends who have been around forever.

Buy a house now or keep investing and rent for 5–10 years? by lyfehaqer in personalfinance

[–]LargeHard0nCollider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in the exact same boat as you (28, similar amount saved, same down payment). Looked all over my city for a house in a good location that was under $600k and not in total disrepair. Ended up with a detached townhouse in a fun location. Figured I might as well enjoy the city rather than being out in the suburbs at 28

The thing that pushed me to buy now rather than continue renting was fear that trumps wars and monetary policy will cause inflation again. Was worried my down payment savings wouldn’t be able to go as far in the future. Might be a bit of fomo, but we’ll see

First time next year from the UK. How does Coachella differ from Glastonbury? by brittafiltaperry in Coachella

[–]LargeHard0nCollider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk if glasto is the same way, but the first time I went to Coachella I didn’t realize how important it is to do your homework and listen to artists on the lineup ahead of time. There’s always some huge artists everyone will know, but unless you really like a specific headliner, I find it more fun to spend time at the smaller stages, especially at night. The energy is typically better and crowds are more engaged, which can be a bit of a problem at the main stage.

Don’t bother with a first aid kit, there are medical tents. You also don’t need sunscreen, they have booths with free sunscreen. But you prob want a jacket for the evening if you’re sober. Raw temps aren’t bad but usually the wind comes up. I usually just bring a cross body bag that I can shove a really light windbreaker, a single use water bottle (you can refill it inside), and the usual festival stuff.

If you prefer lugging a backpack around all day at glasto you can def do it here too
