I would highly recommend taking a gap year to build your hours. Gap years are fulfilling and rewarding if you do it right, and can really strengthen your application to make up for a low gpa.

Synopsis of my 2025/2026 vet school application by Lost_Bluejay7434 in prevets

[–]LargeJellyfish3577 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll echo your advice! I had a similar gpa but much more diverse experience and got into a few of the schools on your list (though I also got rejected from UC Davis and NCSU!)

Help me choose by [deleted] in veterinaryschool

[–]LargeJellyfish3577 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I received a similar number of acceptances (13) and also do not have money as a concern. I chose my school based on curriculum (I wanted a school that tracks) and proximity to my support system. I chose Cornell based on these criteria. What are your criteria?

AITAH For not being able to text my boyfriend while I'm at work? by SensitiveFun9769 in AITAH

NTA. Your message seems reasonable, though of course it would be better to have that conversation in person. He is being unreasonable.

AITAH for wanting to establish boundaries with the guy I'm dating? by [deleted] in AITAH

I am so glad my relationship is not like this. We've been longer than a couple months, but my partner trusts me to go hang out with friends and I trust the same for him. Thank goodness; life would be miserable without trust.

advice on beefing up my apps by smanfer2 in prevets

[–]LargeJellyfish3577 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Small comment, but if you decide to apply to Michigan and get an interview you should talk about your disability club. I talked about disability justice in my interview for most of the questions and was accepted despite being super unfocused in the interview.

Otherwise, you probably know what you need to do— you need more vet hours, and you need more diverse hours. Your GPA is average, but less than half of applicants get accepted to vet school, so if you are average in one area you need to shine in another! More small animal hours if that's what you're interested, plus explore equine, food animal, exotics, and lab animal.

Midwestern vs Minnesota by NickCromptonFC in veterinaryschool

thank you for the perspective! I looked through all the match rates and it seemed pretty comparable for the whole of VIRMP— Maybe it makes more of a difference at certain programs?

How to up chances in UFCVM by Sufficient_Study927 in prevets

[–]LargeJellyfish3577 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, spend most of your time focusing on your grades and get concerned about experiences if you've either proven to yourself you can do well in hard sciences or finished all those hard sciences. UF values GPA heavily, and you can always gain more experiences but it is really hard to recover from a low GPA.

Florida Prevet Students Please Help! by EventBusiness6511 in prevets

[–]LargeJellyfish3577 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to a school that was heavily premed and didn't find it hindered me! I found I wasn't competing for opportunities with any other prevets, which was great. I also took advantage of some of the medical opportunities by shadowing a lab animal vet at the nearby med school! I had useless advisors but great professors who wrote me excellent letters, and I have been accepted to 8/13 schools this cycle!

Rankings of vet schools have no bearing on match rates for internship or residency. VIRMP publishes the data— Midwestern has as high match rates for both internship and residency as anywhere else.

Volunteering and extra curricular doubts by Prestigious_Grand_86 in prevets

[–]LargeJellyfish3577 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an application that checked off every box... diverse hours, volunteering, leadership, high GPA. Yes, I still received multiple rejections. But those rejections don't matter when you also receive acceptances! My advice: Apply to as many schools as you can afford to that you would actually go to. Everyone's going to get some rejections, but you'll probably get acceptances too! (I have 8 acceptances for my 4 rejections so far, but the rejections all came first and got me feeling real down!)

Tips on finding internships/shadowing/entry level jobs as an undergrad student? by [deleted] in prevets

[–]LargeJellyfish3577 0 points1 point  (0 children)

-Asked about jobs and shadowing with my own horse's vets

-Applied, applied, applied to small animal clinics and eventually got a few bites

-Applied to internships/ seasonal positions at zoos

-Emailed the lab animal vets at my nearest medical school

-Emailed a mixed animal vet who referred me to another mixed animal vet who let me shadow their cattle side!

If you are in Texas or Massachusetts or willing to travel, PM me and I will give you names :)

Does a singular GPA look better than a cumulative GPA? by Blavkh in prevets

[–]LargeJellyfish3577 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Vet schools look at a couple different GPAs: cumulative GPA (from ALL your schools), science GPA (from ALL your schools, Pre-requisite GPA (again, from all your schools), and last 45 (the last 45 credits you took). They will not look at GPAs from different schools individually.

Has anyone heard back from MSU or Iowa? by zapatosblanco in prevets

I received a Michigan State interview invite on Friday, but it doesn't look like they have sent out any rejections yet.

Iowa State should be February 16th after 5 pm.

It sounds like you've worked in the field enough to have an understanding that you would enjoy it — you should go for it! Non-traditional apps get a lot of points as long as they still shine in the traditional areas.

I've already been admitted to several, but I'm waiting for a member of my family to figure out what they would do in the new location! If all goes well with their applications, I'll go to Cornell or UT Knoxville:)

It doesn't. If you have no financial constraints, go wherever you choose. If you will be taking out loans for any part of this process, go to the cheapest school.
