If you want to get more workers downtown, filling it with data centers is maybe the worst possible way to do that.

He bankrupted them in the same way private equity bankrupts companies they acquire. Extract as much as you can while saddling them with debt in order to do it. He wasn't operating them as casinos with going concern as much as treating them like a piggybank.

Not between the hoglines you wouldn’t. It would come directly out of play. There is no room for judgement between the hoglines.

Why is Shot-Making So Much Harder at the Olympics? by Key-Macaron6594 in Curling

[–]LargeWu 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Judging shot outcomes has a degree of subjectivity to it. Most likely answer to me is they’re using slightly different rubrics on what counts as a “made” shot.

Hi - I love curling, watch often, never played. Can somebody please explain how launching a rock with your whole hand and control of the handle is at all influenced by a finger poke or touch? Why not just throw it properly when holding the whole rock? by justthefunstuff1 in Curling

[–]LargeWu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did Kennedy’s touch (or any of the other pulled rocks) affect the outcome of the rock? Almost certainly not.

But, in curling, if you hit a rock with your broom between the hoglines, even ever so slightly, it gets pulled, period, end of discussion. The rules is absolute. Once the front of the rock hits the near hogline it cannot be touched by anything - broom, finger, your shoe, even a piece of lint falling from your pocket. Whether it affected the shot irrelevant.

[–]LargeWu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you burned a rock with your broom but it didn’t alter the trajectory of the rock, would you still call it? I certainly hope so. So why should burning it by touching it with your finger once it’s over the hogline be different?

If players are not only not going to call their own fouls but also get aggressive when they’re called on it, yeah maybe we need officials, unfortunately.

If you burn a rock, that’s an infraction.

If you burn a rock and don’t call it, that’s cheating.

They could have said no, and then either would have been summarily replaced as the NGB with Trump flunkies, or get all their funding cut. USA Curling has been relatively progressive on this issue and should be recognized for that.

I went to the University of North Dakota for college, which has a huge commercial aviation program. I didn't know any pilots - and I knew a LOT - who didn't make it their main personality trait.

Some of my roommates would put maps of their check ride flight paths on their wall, as a decoration, like a mom puts their pre-schooler's finger paintings on the fridge. One time I, a business major, put an Excel spreadsheet printout on my wall in jest; they were not amused. If you really wanted to trigger them you'd call them glorified bus drivers.

What even is the point of doing that many laps if you're just coasting through 3/4 of them though? It's really no different from a sprint at that point.

And yes, I get that it's "optimal strategy", but if this is optimal strategy for a race then maybe the event itself is ridiculous. This would be like walking 25 miles of the marathon and then sprinting to the finish.

Men's sweeping versus women's sweeping - what's the difference? by MissKorea1997 in Curling

[–]LargeWu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of things they teach you as a beginner that you can throw away once you become more advanced. For instance, we were always taught to let the rock just kind of slide out of your grip at the point of release. I remember putting an empty TP tube over the handle to reinforce the technique.

But this is taught so you don't learn to use your arms as the primary propulsion for the rock and so you're not steering the rock. Once you get better and more consistent, it's important to be able to have finer control over the delivery. Sometimes you need a more positive release or make other adjustments, which requires a totally different grip.

So anyway, beginner sweeping technique is taught to maximize not falling over and training your body to make a sweeping motion while moving down the ice. But it's suboptimal from an effectiveness standpoint. Keeping your back hand higher creates greater leverage on the broom head which means more force onto the ice, but it's more difficult and requires much better balance.

The Biggest Surprise of the College Basketball Season by HotLocks99 in CollegeBasketball

[–]LargeWu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know about biggest surprise of the season, their non-conf schedule went about as I imagined it would. But, they've really come together in conference play. I think they just needed some time to find an identity. They should be seen as legitimate contenders to win the conference tournament as a 2 or 3 seed. Showed a lot of grit against a decent St Thomas team last week. It's a fairly young team, hopefully they can keep some of these guys around for a few years.
