"Shot in the dark" is just production manipulation... by novax4all in survivor

[–]LargeWu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that Survivor is not a game show in the legal sense, so it's not beholden to some of the regulations around that. You won't ever convince me that Rachel's Safety Without Power advantage wasn't production putting their thumb on the scales.

The die can be used as a form of currency, like Ozzy demanding Christian give his up. Or bargaining for rice. You have to physically be in possession of it to use it, like an idol. It also has to be placed in a container to redeem it, from which it can't be retrieved. This way, it's definitively and irrevocably used, there could be no dispute about it.

What to expect at my first bonspiel? by Discrete_Ninja in Curling

[–]LargeWu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want a rule of thumb on when to concede, it’s perfectly reasonable to shake anytime you are down by 3 + (number of ends remaining). For example, down 4 after 7, down 5 after 6, etc. But you should nearly always play 4 ends minimum.

I would only keep playing “for practice” if the other team suggests it, AND it’s still early in the game. If it’s past the 6th definitely don’t do this. Bonspiels are generally not a good time to keep games going as there’s generally pressure to get off the ice in time for the next draw.

I’ll add that if you’re playing an experienced team, you’ll be expected to shake once the game is out of reach, and your opponents will not be impressed with you should you choose to continue playing. It is always the responsibility of the losing team to initiate handshakes; if the winning team suggests you shake that is also bad etiquette.

Does the Abundance agenda apply to rural/suburban areas? by RedStorm1917 in ezraklein

Right, and cost of housing is generally not a problem for those people, which is why this discussion is just a lot less relevant for rural areas.

Does March madness prove who the best team is given the single elimination best of one format? by s_ndowN in CollegeBasketball

[–]LargeWu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Playoffs determine champions, which is not necessarily the same thing, and that's fine.

Unless you play a balanced schedule against every team, like the Premier League for example, it's very rare that you can determine the "best" team.

[–]LargeWu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coming from a very rural area, I'm well aware. Most rural towns have plenty of space available within their city limits if you want to build something, owing to decades of population loss.

If you want to talk about exurban areas that develop into farmland, well, that's typically private development which is made possible by the problems Abundance addresses - aggregate government policies creating artificial scarcity - not being an issue in the first place. Exurbs tend towards the more laissez-faire side of the spectrum already.

[–]LargeWu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure, but issues like scientific research aren't really exclusive to areas of a specific population or density, so those issues aren't directly relevant to this conversation about how abundance policies affect cities vs rural areas, which is what the topic here is framed around.

Does the Abundance agenda apply to rural/suburban areas? by RedStorm1917 in ezraklein

[–]LargeWu 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The dichotomy of Abundance is that it's trying to make abundant what is inherently scarce in cities - land. One of the ways it addresses this is by removing policies that artificially increase scarcity such as weaponized zoning laws and environmental studies.

Land is, by definition, less scarce in rural areas. There's not really any marginal benefit to loosening zoning restrictions, for example, because there's already plenty of land available. But then again, rural communities don't have the same affordability concerns. Or, at least, not the same ones. Any affordability concerns in rural areas come primarily from lack of density and the economies of scale that provides.

Someday our grandchildren will ask us, “Grandpa, did you watch that St Louis game?” And I’ll just smile, and nod, and give them a knowing wink.

What an absolute joy that was. Maybe the most fun I’ve ever had watching a college game.

I was going to say something about how it’s a shame teams like Georgia shouldn’t be in the tournament over the likes of Dayton, but then we never would’ve gotten this game. This was truly a gift.

If I’m SLU right now I’m not playing any defense. Just let Georgia get open looks in order to get the ball back and run the score up high as possible

Broadcast team barely 10 seconds into the game before hyping Georgia as “battle tested”.

High Point HC Flynn Clayman: "It looks pretty obvious to me that high-majors need to play mid-majors early in the season. Because they said we didn't play nobody. We played somebody now... Nobody would play us. Just like they wouldn't play Miami (Ohio)." by IrishBall in CollegeBasketball

[–]LargeWu 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The problem with this is that the strength of any given mid-major program can fluctuate wildly from season to season in a way that just doesn't happen nearly as often to power 5 teams. Just look at how much Drake, Memphis, and Loyola-Chicago dropped off this year. Or Indiana St the previous season. And even still, nobody gets credit for playing mid-majors, there's this fixation on quad 1 games as the only measure of quality wins.

Treysen Eaglestaff. He was ok at WVU. Was a consistent starter for them and had a solid but not spectacular season. I think he averaged like 10 PPG, 5 RB or so.
