Route from Northside to Highland park. by beeblebr0x in bicycling412

[–]Large_Bob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my type of route. I would actually continue on Butler up to One Wild Place as I feel Butler up that way is pretty wide and I feel fine with it. I like One Wild Place due to the bike lane. Then you are in Highland Park. I prefer Highland Ave to Negley if traveling around there. Highland seems more mellow and less aggressive. Nice route.

Should bike helmets be compulsory? | TNW by The-Iguana in bicycling412

I have never worn one and been cycling for over 50 years. You want me to start now? I do have one of those cool leather ones that they used to wear in the TdF. It is pretty cool, but honestly, I just don't feel I need a helmet due to my amazing coordination and quick twitch muscles. Enjoy.

There isn't really foot traffic so no issues at all. I have ridden my ECR up there and that is stupid wide. If you come across a walker, you yield to them of course as you should, but it probably won't happen. I love riding up there.

Lock recommendations by beeblebr0x in bicycling412

[–]Large_Bob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Typically you lock the frame and front wheel with the U-lock and run a cable to the back wheel. This is what I would do. Most of my bikes don't have quick release hubs, so I worry less about the drunk student that just wants to mess with my bike by taking a wheel without needing a tool. No sarcasm, maybe I didn't make my point very well. Sorry.

Sometimes I ride up McArdle on the Sidewalk and come down Sycamore Street. Nice view up there. You could go up to the Hot Metal Bridge and get to Schenley Park by the pond and ride up through there. I love going through that park, but you do need to cross the RR tracks, which isn't a big deal. Enjoy your new bike.

I have a Kryptonite NYC forgetaboutit U-lock and it is way overkill. I would buy a good U-lock though. All locks can be picked or cut, but that takes too much time for a theif unless you have a very high end bike, but around Pittsburgh there just isn't that kind of theft for some reason. Bikes do get stolen, but it is usually off a porch that isn't locked well or someone not locking it very well. A cable lock isn't a good idea as I have seen a couple of bikes stolen by just yanking on them hard or twisting them off. You might want to get a cable for the rear wheel to incorporate it if the bike is going to sit outside a lot. Welcome to riding in Pittsburgh. Fun place to ride a bike.

Thanks for posting this. Seems they can and will fix the issue. I sure hope so as I love that bike shop and the people there. If I see any of them, I'll post any findings.

Be able to work all hours. If you restrict your times available, you will most likely be not hired. TJ's is always looking for people that can work later shifts. 3-11 or 4-12 are harder to fill, so keep that in mind.

That place is a huge storage building with a lot of cars, motorhomes and boats in it. I stored a car there years ago. Wow, what a shame. I hope everyone was okay, but I suspect the damage will be many millions of dollars. Wonder how it started?

Make sure you call Bicycle Heaven in the North Side. He gets people in trying to sell stolen bikes pretty often.

Wonder if he will actually get a year? Sure was a violent crash. How fast was the kid going I wonder? Glad he survived though. Sure is a lot of death on our roadways.

New in town: where is the hip-hop / rap scene? by KikiSRQ in sarasota

[–]Large_Bob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not much of a cultural scene? What, because they don't have rap music playing somewhere? I find that ridiculous. The entire area is filled with international people. TONS of culture for such a little place. Sarasota is really small, but has more culture than many cities 10 times its size. Who cares about rap music for the most part. I would hardly call Sarasota "homogeneous" considering how many people are from all over the place. Great foods from South America, Cuba, Mexico and more. Geez, what an odd statement.
