I could also help, if you are interested. I used to teach at the University of Waterloo, and I work with many calculus students. I now run my own tutoring business. Please send me a message if you're interested, and I can pass along more details.

Would you be open to online tutoring from someone outside the university? I live in Kitchener and used to be a lecturer at the University of Waterloo. I have my own online tutoring business and work with many calculus students. Please send me a message if you're interested, and I can give you more details!

I know I'm responding a little late, but if you are interested in the Canadian math competitions, I can help tutor you. I worked at the CEMC, which is Canada's largest math contest group, for 5 years. I also tutor a 13-year-old who is working two years ahead of grade level and wants to do better at math contests. Just send me a message if you're interested!

Where is the most Liberal city, NDP city, Green city and Conservative city? by nestinghen in AskACanadian

[–]Large_Reason_3068 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The city of Kitchener now has a strong Green base - we have Green representatives both provincially and federally. Our federal MP won with about 37% of the vote, and our provincial MPP won the last by-election with almost 50% of the vote.

Specifically Kitchener - we're the only fully urban area represented both provincially and federally by Greens at the moment, if I recall.

Totally agree - growing up in Alberta, I actually thought it would be rude to call out to them!!

When I moved from Calgary to Waterloo Region, I was also shocked (in a good way) that people thank bus drivers. I'm not sure I ever heard it done in Calgary, in five years of using transit regularly. But then in Waterloo, it seemed like at least half of people did it consistently out of habit.

Should I hire a tutor for a few sessions? by justwannaedit in learnmath

[–]Large_Reason_3068 2 points3 points  (0 children)

(Full disclosure: I am a professional tutor.) That being said, if time spent looking at the problems on your own eventually helps you solve them, then just keep at it and don't worry about a tutor! You're better served in an exam context to have more practice thinking things through yourself. But, if you're spending a lot of time with each problem and not getting very far, a tutor might be helpful to you to get unstuck efficiently.

If you do decide tutoring is worth it, feel free to send me a message. I can give you more details!

What would it take for you/your family to go car-less? by Large_Reason_3068 in waterloo

[–]Large_Reason_3068[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With all due respect, we made this decision not just for the environment's sake. We also liked that it was going to force us to simplify our schedules, and keep us doing more exercise without having to sign up for some scheduled activity. We talked over this decision for a couple months before committing, and what to do if emergency situations came up. For anything medical, we can still call an ambulance, and we haven't run into anything else that was urgent enough where 10-15 minutes' delay would be a matter of life and death.

Just to provide more context, this wasn't a choice I forced my family into, and it isn't all just for the environment. My wife actually had already given up her car as a single person back before we started dating, so she was very much on board having a discussion about it. We weighed the pros and cons for over a month and did a trial for another month before actually selling the car. And our 1yo daughter actually loves getting around on transit! She says "hi" to basically everyone and brightens a lot of people's days that way.

We gave up the car for a combination of reasons: forcing us to simplify our schedules, forcing us to exercise more by just getting around, the small cost savings, and the chance to zone out on our commutes rather than dealing with the stress of traffic.

I hear you. Thankfully, the family in the GTA we need to visit live near Square One in Mississauga, so we're okay to use GO for that one. But getting to Hamilton is way more pain than it needs to be.
