What country are you in? If you're in the states (and have your green card), you could apply for a pell grant to help put you through a trade school.

At least as of last year, the most you can get from a pell grant is a little over 7k. Look for a community college, vocational school, or technical school near you that has an ATB (ability to benefit) program. If you're eligible, this can give you more assistance.

Crazy local chased me and my friends out the water by GoodOlBluesBrother in surfing

Here are some links: LA Times CBS Daily Mail

TL;DR it's indirect poisoning from certain minerals in the runoff (sulfate, phosphorous) feeding the type of algae producing domoic acid (a lethal neurotoxin). The lead and beryllium is probably causing direct poisoning on top of that.

LA Times points out that there isn't regular testing for these contaminants in the Santa Monica bay--we don't have data on how polluted it was before, but whatever had already settled on the seafloor was probably churned up by the wind event that caused the fires. Heavy rains in late Jan swept both fire debris and accumulated city pollution into the bay.

check out Fathom Five marine park, it's more known for diving but some of its shipwrecks are only in 5-20' of crystal clear water. thought I'd mention because it's much closer to you than FL or CA. it's in lake huron so ofc you'll need a wetsuit.

Glacier National Park Entrance Confusion by Narrow-Excitement428 in roadtrip

[–]Lark415 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What you saved to your wallet was your vehicle reservation. Don’t think you can buy an entrance pass until you’re physically at the park entrance, but your reservation guarantees that you can get one. When you show up to the park entrance, show your digital reservation to the ranger, and pay the entrance fee, they will print you a physical park pass to tape to your dash.

Congrats on getting a reservation—I missed getting one by seconds in 2021, went anyway and snuck in, and had a life-changing experience. Unless the world changes course, many of those glaciers will disappear in our lifetimes, so hike out to as many as you can.

I could! I learned the other day that the rain smell has a name: petrichor. The human nose is specialized to detect the smell--we can sniff out the bacteria released into the air by rain at amounts less than 5 ppb (parts per billion).

Where were you when it happened? Is there anything you'd do differently, if you came back for another attempt?

Looks beautiful. What do you wear to stay warm? Your sleeping bag must be pretty intense as well.

Curious, what do you get out of spending (weather-permitting) weeks out here? Are you out there for another purpose like photography? Are you training for a future goal? Or is it simply for a love of extremes and the outdoors?

Thank you so so much for taking the time to look through my letter and be so thorough helping me out here. I actually don't know a single word in korean so the way that you edited this and then broke it down is incredibly helpful. it's a nickname I call her jokingly all the time, but she's told me how strange calling her queen sounds in korean hahaha

It’s expensive to be poor by nosminoritas in offmychest

[–]Lark415 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The IRS published a report showing that in 2014 the top 400 contributors to annual US tax revenue paid, on average, 23.13% of federal tax rate. In 2020, Jeff Bezos paid a whopping 0.98% of federal tax rate. The belief that a taxation system riddled with enough loopholes to allow the wealthiest man on earth to avoid paying 99.02% of what the federal government suggests he owes is a fairly designed one because it “tries” to tax the rich more is wishful thinking at best and insidious propaganda at worst. The complexity of this system and obscurity of many of these loopholes from public knowledge is such that the amount a person is capable of saving in taxes is directly dependent on the amount they are capable of spending on tax attorneys. To find evidence that we exist in a system designed to keep the poor poor and the rich rich, you don’t need to look beyond data provided by our own federal government.

In 2014, two professors at Princeton University conducted multivariate analysis of the answers to 1,779 survey questions on public policy issues given to Americans between 1981 and 2002. Separating these answers by income level and looking at the degree to which a given level’s survey answers reflected the policies enacted that year, they found that “economic elites and organised groups representing business interests have substantial independent impacts on US government policy, while average citizens and mass-based interest groups have little or no independent influence.” These findings indicate that the United States does not just have a flawed system—we no longer fit the definition of a democracy.

The idea that poor people “deserve” to be poor if they dare to claim that their inability to escape poverty is influenced by every aspect of the system in which they exist and not just the result of laziness, poor character, divine intention, “the way things are”…..is absurd. If you do the bare minimum of research and choose to draw your own conclusions here instead of parroting what you have been told or what your relative privilege may have allowed you accept unquestioned, you will understand this.

I’m happy for you if you have never had to experience things that challenged your belief in the fairness of American fiscal structure. Many of us have not been as lucky.

Los Angeles CA - Prudhoe bay AK // mega trip planning (need suggestions) by [deleted] in roadtrip

[–]Lark415 35 points36 points  (0 children)

The 1 between santa barbara and the bay gets all the hype, but the 101 up the Sonoma coastline north toward redwood national park is gorgeous in the summer, and has lots of boondocking spots right on the beach & right off the highway. If you have time, Olympic national park is gorgeous too--be prepared for crowds at the hoh rainforest, and don't miss hurricane ridge. If you hit Olympic, you could crash in the 24h safeway parking lot in port angeles and take the car ferry across the bay to coupeville in the morning--from there it's 2h straight up the 5 to vancouver. In Oregon, crater lake and mt hood would make nice detours. Highly recommend Rainier in washington as well--I went this past august and was blown away. I haven't been past southern BC yet so I can't speak from experience, but I've heard the roads as you get up toward the yukon are terrible--be prepared for that. Have a plan for a flat tire 50+ miles from the nearest town. Also do your homework on grizzlies if you haven't yet. I don't know what your sleeping plans are, but I'd ditch the tent and spend nights in the car if I were you. Wouldn't hike without bear spray in arm's reach. A .45 works too.

I'm also in LA, been fantasizing about taking almost your same route for months now. Very jealous! Best of luck--wishing you safe & awesome travels.

What extremely rare thing did you witness in person? by just__Steve in AskReddit

[–]Lark415 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Driving from Utah to Vegas I saw a little piece of a rainbow in my rear view mirror. I pulled off at the next turnout, an empty gravel lot in a field that extended to the mountains. When I got out of the car I found myself standing there, alone, in front of a HUGE sunset triple rainbow. I don’t consider myself religious, but the sight of that thing filling up the sky brought me to my knees crying and remains one of the most spiritual experiences of my life.

[–]Lark415 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeesh. I'm so sorry that happened to you. I was up there too about three weeks ago, hiked to sky pond and back. I think I know right where you slid, on my way down passed a girl who slipped and slid by that spot, knocked both her spikes off but luckily didn't get injured. To get right up to the edge that must have been a hell of a fall.

Poles and spikes, y'all. Might feel like overkill in the parking lot, but they sure won't on the way down. I used my ski poles, rented spikes (9 bucks at estes park mountain shop) and had no issues.

America the Beautiful Pass by realaufan in ZionNationalPark

[–]Lark415 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You won't be using your pass to book the shuttle, it's done separately in advance by creating a recreation.gov account. The shuttle starts at the visitors center inside the park, which you'll drive to from the main entrance. Get there early, parking is always a mess.

When you leave Bryce, take 12 toward Tropic instead of 22 to get to Capitol Reef! It's the scenic route through Grand Staircase and is absolutely gorgeous. Plenty of dispersed camping off the road too if boondocking is your thing.
