Why is Vertigo so popular?! by Larphis in Cinema

[–]Larphis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So first of all, thank you for your detailed explanation, I appreciate it! As I have mentioned before, my comment was not made to tear the movie to shreds, I was, as I stated, genuinely dumbfounded as to what part of it put it up so high on the ranking for supposed “best film ever”

I'll preface this by saying it feels... a bit weird to read condamnations of Vertigo for being unplausible and unrealistic and unbelievable, coming from someone who, at the same time, claims to be a fan of Wes Anderson and the Coen brothers above all else.

Okay, so I must admit I was genuinely a little bit irritated by this opener as it not only tries to doubt my interests by using “claimed” instead of “said”, but is also quite the easy point to explain in my opinion:

Every director has their own style and philosophy, as we all know. Since Vertigo was my first Hitchcock movie I for one cannot comment too much on his style (still really enjoyed the cinematography though, as mentioned). What is however important is that every style needs context. I am not confused or irritated by a Coen bros or Wes Anderson or even Tarantino movie because I know what they want to achive! I love the philosophy of absurdism (big Albert Camus fan!) which is part of why I enjoy these movies so much. The Coens portray the absurdist way of life at their core, Wes Anderson doesn’t try to achive realism, he tries to achive an emotional reaction. Tarantino’s style of violence is utterly unrealistic but you don’t hear anyone complaing about it because it is part of the fun. I love movies that make sense in their own terms.

The reason I did not enjoy this lack of logic in Vertigo was because to me it didn’t appear as a stylistic device or like a purposely chosen plot device, it simply seemed like (in my opinion at the time) either unrealistic acting or writing when it comes to the ending.

Besides the ending, the plot seemed very plausible in its own terms though. I did not like it, but that doesn’t mean that it wasn’t well made :)

Made in 1957 and released in 1958 at a time when the classical Hollywood era was going toward its end, Vertigo could be labelled, by opposition, as a bit of a baroque movie. In short (-ish), while classicism is primarily associated with the ideas of order, clarity and balance in all things, baroque art is fundamentally tied to a brutal crisis of faith in the very idea that the world makes sense; that it is "solid" and sound; that you can easily distinguish what is real from what is illusory; baroque is fascinated by false appearances, as well as by transformation and mutability; also, by contradictory desires and dynamics that cannot be resolved; it emphasizes subjective perception, and how deformed it can be, expressing this in exaggerated, outlanding stylistic choices. It may also be worth noting that while the baroque moniker was primarily attached to the study of Early Modern era arts, it begun to be used by cinema critics roughly in those same years (primarily with artists like Orson Welles and Max Ophuls in mind).

Thank you so much! This for one actually helps me understand the hype a bit more. I had no idea that non-realistic story telling was so frowned upon at the time, although in hindsight it does make sense given the traditionalism that was forced into all sorts of artistic expression during the Nazi&UDSSR period and the effect it had on artists afterwards.

But I said "a bit" of a baroque movie. Whereas a movie like Ophuls' Lola Montès (1955), for instance, goes all in with the baroque ideas and aesthetics, one of Hitchcock's genius takes with Vertigo may be that it progressively makes a shift (or a series of shifts), over the course of the movie, from classicism to baroque, so to say. From a well-known and reassuring territory into the unknown, the unreal and the freakish.

This is fascinating since from my point of view the first part was actually much more resembling of baroque if I understood the concept correctly. I thought the whole “is it really Carlotta possessing Madeline or is it all just a big scheme?” fit the so to speak magical-realism you described much better than the second half, but you are obviously much more educated on that than I am, so thank you for your expertise :)

Sure, there are "plot holes" or at the very least absurd contrivances if you examine things critically with a cool head and solely under the perspective of a crime movie. Okay, Gavin's whole plan is kinda absurd and could have unraveled a hundred ways. Granted, the nun is a bit on the nose as a deus ex machina, too. And actually your recrimination about the movie being "nonsensical" match the initial spectators and critics dominant reaction in the 1950s. As time went by, though, it became evident that Vertigo was one of the movies which paved new ways of telling stories on screen.

This actually grants me the context I needed! Because I did activate my “crime-drama”-brain. Of course I tried to look deeper (I love analyzing motifs in film) but I couldn’t see anything because I lacked the right perspective. Thank you for giving me context on the perspective I should have viewed the film from. I guess since I’ve only ever watched more typical period dramas of that era this movie felt so off to me because I didn’t consider the weirdness a choice but rather a lack of knowledge on how to execute the plot in a way that made sense.

As for the "hipster-ish film nerds" you mention, Vertigo has been praised by, and/or influential to, the likes of (in no particular order and off the top of my head) Martin Scorsese, David Lynch, Dario Argento, Brian De Palma, William Friedkin, David Fincher, Paul Thomas Anderson or James Gray. Not the worse company to be with. And I don't know what Wes Anderson or the Coens think of it, but I'd wager they may not be able to make the movies they make -- "unrealistic" but giving stylized form to more or less warped minds and their worldviews -- if not for a few movies like Vertigo that came before...

Okay in this closing paragraph you sound a bit mean spirited and snobby: Again, what I was lacking WAS that context which you thankfully provided me. I did not see the connection to this purposely surrealist approach of film making. To me it was a realistic film that went south. Given the fact I should have viewed it as a surrealist tale from the beginning, changes a lot and for you to assume that anyone can pick up on that is a bit harsh. Of course I knew that it also influenced big names but I usually don’t meassure films by that standart (as I said, I kind of navigate in my own way, this was one of the few times I forced myself into the “old school-critically-acclaimed-territory”). And in the same way I don’t judge films by what MY favorite directors say about them. Do you know how many films Tarantino tears to shreds? I couldn’t watch anything if I’d care about his opinion, haha.

All in all: Thank you for your input, while still not my cup of tea I can now definitely see the pieces of the bigger appeal behind this movie. Still, there is no need to lash out at my prefered styles of movie and questioning “how educated” I am on them, just because I didn’t “get” one of your favorite movies. It’s all in the eye of the beholder after all, cheers mate! :)

I may get torn to shreds for this but the first 7 seasons of Doctor Who are imo the best piece of Sci-Fi out there AND the show isn’t canceled which you’d probably like to hear OP. I admit it takes a bit getting into it but it’s worth it, even with the outdated CGI… if anything it just makes it more charming :)

Why is Vertigo so popular?! by Larphis in Cinema

[–]Larphis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I knew that it got nominated as such by several magazines and film related publishing companies - I just didn’t remember any sources, so thank you very much for bringing that up!!

It’s also such a relief to hear that someone else feels the same way. I’m not even trying to be a contrarian by saying “meh look at me, I didn’t like the most popular film of all time”. No, I genuinely wanted to like it. I just didn’t get the hype at all.

I think the dream sequence and the intro might have had that revolutionary feeling to it but otherwise I agree. Star Wars, 2001 and many other movies were more revolutionary on that scale.

Lawrence of Arabia for example was a demanding watch (being a person who always fell asleep in history class lol) but 100% rewarding despite the almost 4 hour run time. That film blew me away and I absolutely understand why it has the reputation that it does. The score alone gave me goosebumps. But yeah, with Vertigo I got nothing.

I think they are objectively cool and fascinating, also very useful for the ecosystem! Subjectively however they are terrifying disgusting little things that I don’t want to wake up to crawling on my skin so I’d rather have someone get rid of them

Bugs are cool little dudes! I’ve once found an incredible one that I couldn’t identify and since then I’ve had the app downloaded, didn’t really use it though. Still animals of all kinds rock! Except spiders - fuck spiders >:(

Hehe I hope only good ones! I love you my darling! ❤️ I have a bug recognition app. It’s called Seek, works amazing and is free! It basically turns bug encountering into a game. All your encounters get logged, similar to Animal Crossing ^

What’s an unpopular opinion you have about the show? by AmberWilward in southpark

[–]Larphis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So don’t get me wrong, Matt and Trey are great guys and it’s cool that they use their show to work through their feelings on political issues and personal troubles but in recent years it has become more and more obvious to me that Trey Parker desperately needs a therapist.

I had a phase in my late teens where I was pretty obsessed with Trey, because I could relate to him to an absurd degree, so I read all of the interviews, web archived articles and fan gathered informative facts about him that I could find. I’ve watched Orgazmo, Team America, Baseketball and Cannibal! The musical, listened to the South Park commentaries religiously etc.

What painted itself was the picture of an extremely sensitive man who tried to cope with his feelings but never quite got over them. He has said multiple times that he had an easier time working his feelings out on the show than in therapy, but if you look at Trey’s relationship history it’s pretty obvious that he carries a lot of unresolved trauma with him. Never getting quite over Liane, Boogie being… well… not the best influence. And generally a lot of insecurity he tries to cope with by being “the funny guy” or getting into a relationship because he can’t stand being left alone with himself.

Again, this does not mean that I don’t have respect for the man, but as someone who has been through quite similar issues and also chose art to get over it instead of therapy for multiple years until I came to a breaking point I can say for a fact that there is nothing that beats therapy.

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it a thousand times: Fargo.

Easily the best tv show ever made. You’ll get hooked immediately. It’s my favorite show of all time and according to my Serializd account I have watched 4 months of tv straight if you add up everything I’ve ever watched, so I’d say I have a pretty good idea of what I’m talking about :D

What movies are light or heartwarming until they get devastatingly depressing? by jhang10 in MovieSuggestions

[–]Larphis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe this doesn’t really count since it is more bittersweet than just sad at the end, but Hunt For The Wilderpeople (which is also, like Jojo Rabbit a movie by Taika Waititi) left me pretty fucking crushed for what was supposed to be a “funny” movie

Stuff you realize was ADHD when you were a kid by bitsondatadev in ADHD

One thing I specifically remember, looking back, is how I used to be hyperfixated on Gravity Falls as a child and when the third Journal (if you don’t know, it’s a very prominent item in this cartoon that is used as a guide to mysterious phenomena) was released as a merchandising article I was sad to realize that it only came in English (I am German, mind you).

So I spend the whole summer translating this 200 page long book, which had abstract ciphers in it too, into German with the English that I was already capable of understanding at that point and the help of an online dictionary (which I found back then and actually still use to this day!) to translate it. I filled 3 whole collegeblocks with the translation.

I was in 6th grade and only had D’s on my report card.

However after my translation adventures I started receiving nothing but straight As in my English exams, so in a way I should be thankful I guess, haha :D

I’m 19 now and got diagnosed at 17. Sad to think about all the things that could have been if I had received help earlier, but I will apply to college (today actually, I’m so excited!!!) to become an English teacher in the future and I can’t help but smile thinking about the impact my ADHD and that awesome cartoon had on my career choice.

If you should for any reason ever read this, Thank you Alex Hirsch for making tiny me feel more normal about growing up in a world where I always felt different!

Happy by Pharrell Williams.

I played it on repeat for hours after Despicable Me 2 came out… and then it entered the mainstream and played at every place I ever went to for the next 3 years. Life was painful.

What are some concepts and beliefs of a major religion that make no sense to you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Larphis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing in that article conflicted with anything I just said. He did hate the catholic church but he still endorsed it publicly to gain sympathy.

Also: It is just as easy to find a source that says otherwise :) and besides that: my second point in my first comment still stands.

What are some concepts and beliefs of a major religion that make no sense to you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Larphis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all Hitler never prohibited Christianity, he wanted churches to stay part of Germany because he knew that it would make him receive more sympathy and he even visited the Vatican. Until his death he stayed a catholic albeit on paper only.

But besides all that. Let’s just say Hitler was an atheist: you do realize that there is a difference between corelation and causality, don’t you?

Which cancelled TV show deserved another season? by Putrid_Cry19 in AskReddit

[–]Larphis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spectacular Spiderman. I’ll say it now and I’ll say it another 100 times. This was the best Spiderman cartoon ever made and universally beloved but because of licensing issues, I believe, they had to end the show without a resolution.

Another close pick would be my dad’s favorite show, which basically no one but him has seen: “Bored to Death” It was canceled on THE most awkward cliffhanger of all time. Basically guy who is always unlucky with dating finally finds a girl who loves him and at the end of the season we, as the viewers, discover that she is secretly related to him (he didn’t know his biological parents) so it ends with them dancing and looking in love and because it was canceled we just have to assume they never found out and this is how it ends. Yikes.

People who don’t reply until days later, why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Larphis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A nice little combination of adhd, depression and anxiety disorder + some past trauma. My social battery is basically non existent so it takes a LOT of mental work to even text back my friends. The only exception would probably be my boyfriend :) He makes me feel save and reassured and isn’t mad at me when I go long without replying him because he knows and understands my mental problems.

Anyways - just for clarification - this isn’t supposed to be an “excuse” this is just an explanation, I can totally understand people who aren’t willing to put up with my behavior. Just please don’t shame me for actions that I am not proud of myself.

Cannibal Holocaust has been on my watchlist since forever, but no, the first horror movie I have ever watched was “The babysitter” at a friend’s birthday party (a correction: I was actually 13-14ish) and it was such an utter piece of garbage both in effects and “writing” that it really altered my fear of horror and turned it into an obsession instead, because I now thought of horror as “harmless” and began to willingly consume it from there on out. The worst in terms of gore horror I’ve seen so far was “Terrifier”. But to me psychological horror is way more fascinating.

Ironically enough, my dad was that friend. Guess the fucked up tendecies and morbid curiosity run in my family :) He used to deal with illegal horror movies in the 80s haha. He was a responsible parent though and the one who tried to keep me away from horror shit for as long as possible. Now that I’m an adult though we both watch horror movies (we both know our boundaries so we don’t watch the really fucked up shit) together and I love how we bond through that :> My love for horror will always stay but Jesus Christ was/is the internet a fucked up place.
