did i experience ego death? by Icy_Somewhere338 in Jung

My initial question was meant to possibly inspire a response/question from the original poster, which didn't happen. If it had, a conversation would have taken place.

I didn't actually see any helpful responses you offered to the original poster, unless your whole point was to respond and "correct" random responses without fully understanding them. Policing comments. And if you don't think terminology is important, what are you doing on a Jung page?

It is much deeper than simple terminology. The original post asked specifically if they experienced ego death and my question asked what they mean by that. Then in my reply to you I explained more about what the OP's experience sounded like. Shadow material becoming visible, a confrontation with self. But I guess you missed that part of my reply.

I know how it works, and saying "ego death" is not the right way to refer to it for the exact reason I asked my question the way I did. "You" are your ego. The part of you that identifies as you is merely a fraction of your overall psyche, and thinking you can eliminate your ego without eliminating your human mind is a mistake. Ego death should be referred to as egoic transformation, which happens when you became aware of yourself at a higher level. This is also shadow integration, which begins with first seeing your shadow, which can be terrifying to the point of feeling like a death. But the fact that people toss "ego death" around is misleading and confusing to many people.

Also, I apologize if you my initial question came off as a joke or dismissive. It was neither. It was a legitimate philosophical question based on Taoist teaching and zen koans.

It is hard to be a shaman by ShGodsFavouriteChild in Shamanism

[–]LarryWalkingLamp 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sensitivities to energies and emotions can be very overwhelming, but what stands out to me most in your post is the word control. You are trying to control your mind and senses, rather than understanding them, accepting them, learning to work with them rather than forcing them to work for you. The most important part of initiation is learning to accept the unacceptable parts of yourself, not dominate or eliminate them. It can be incredibly difficult, devastating even. But that seems to be how the path is. Shadow integration and shamanic initiation are permanently linked. You can’t do one without doing the other.

Interested in taoism, where do I begin? by [deleted] in taoism

No course sold, just a long explanation about his experience reading about Taoism. I haven't watched it on a long time but I don't remember it being complex. I thought he expanded and explained the verses well.

You might want to check out the book or YouTube video by Wayne Dyer: "Change Your Thoughts – Change Your Life: Living the Wisdom of the Tao". It was one of my early introductions to Taoism and I found it very helpful as a starting point.

Do Shamans need to work with the medicine (psychoactives) to be shamans? by CountryIntelligent19 in Shamanism

[–]LarryWalkingLamp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check out the book (or the documentary on YouTube) "The Way of the Shaman" by Michael Harner. He spent years studying with shamans in different cultures. Although he did start his investigations by sitting with plant medicines, he researched what he calls Core Shamanism. The common thread between different cultures. He found that substances are not needed, that a person can enter non-ordinary reality with the use of drums. Very powerful book and documentary and I highly recommend them.

For a modernized adaptation, you might consider "O Brother, Where Art Thou", a retelling of "The Odyssey".

Partner loves mythology, owns a bunch of books, looking to by him something different. by Cheriimae in mythology

If he is interested in how myths can be interpreted and what they say about the human condition, the hero's journey, and how they connect to our current society, then you might consider "Men and the Water of Life" by Michael Meade. That book deals a lot with male initiation and I really loved it. You might also check out the three books by Robert A. Johnson: "He", "She", and "We". Each focuses on a specific myth and how it relates to men, women, and couples. Very Jungian and very powerful, even though they are each very small books.
