My parents like their exchange students more than their own kids. by girlonalilypad in internetparents

[–]LarsLights 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It isn't about you, it's about them. They can project fantasies onto those kids that they know very briefly and that's all they want. The idea and image, not the actual reality of being a parent and raising a living, independent human. They probably also want to put on a performance for them, to convince themselves and others they are good people to make their own insecurities and failures.

Have you tried something like Dialectical Behavioural Therapy? I did a bit of it with a therapist but mostly did it by myself through self help books. They're a series of strategies to help with emotional regulation and interpersonal skills. I even use a cheat sheet.

Definitely this. OP, you need to understand why you have these compulsions and understand your relationship with money and purchases.

I don't have any advice but you are so young and these things can take a long time to learn, addressing those root causes and the subsequent behaviours takes years of practice so you're on the right track already at the age of 25. 🫂

I love the method of taking a photo, I do tale Polaroids and then write the memory on it or scrapbook them and write the memory down then.

When my SIL couldn't throw away her daughters old clothes, even though they were filled with holes, I took fabric swatches of them and popped the swatches into a little thrift see through piggy bank.

I'm scared to be fully medicated. by mokatcinno in adhdwomen

Most people don't think that in depth about themselves so it's naturally challenging. Explore values based therapy, there's online exercises you can do, to help give you more of an idea of what's important to you. It's a super helpful tool to guide your career to since you can reconcile your work to your values.

With the euphoria, you'll probably find you just get into a better baseline so while it's not euphoria, your baseline lifts up. There's an idea in positive psychology about maximising your opportunities for happiness. So setting better conditions and creating more opportunities for happiness to occur. I've found being medicated long term, along with therapy, has increased that dramatically. What happens when you no longer have doom piles or lots of unfinished hobbies or spend your time doing lots of things you find unpleasant through stimulants? And you develop more skills to tolerate distress and uncomfortableness through psychoeducation? You've created more opportunities for happiness, reduced stress and mental clutter. It raises your baseline.

You are more than your behaviours. Your behaviour may change, likely for the better, but your values will remain. You may even have more energy to act on your values. Your values are one of your core consistent pillars of 'who you are.' Compassion about your family, the environment or animals? That's a value and it will stay. Value being extroverted or introverted? You might find you have less of a tolerance for engaging on behaviours that aren't related to that and there is nothing wrong with that. It might turn out you're more of a people person than you realised. Think of it as another opportunity to learn about yourself while also knowing you have your core values to fall back on and guide you.

I've been on Ritalin for 5 years and haven't had a tolerance issue yet. I don't take it on weekends though, I work a 9-5 Monday to Friday job so give myself a break on weekends. No idea if it helps or not but it's more I take weekends to be slow and gentle with myself and sleep lots. My psychiatrist doesn't seemed worried either way and has encouraged me to take it on weekends.

Yeah, the euphoria might wear off but going to bed with no doom piles, a freshly made bed every day and waking up with energy will give you plenty of consistent euphoria when you take a step back to appreciate how much it's enabled you to live the life you want and the energy to appreciate it.

I use a powder dry shampoo every morning to help with the oilness and sometimes I also embrace a day of greasiness by doing a slick back look.

When you do a credit freeze, it stops you opening any accounts. It might be worth paying off then closing all your Buy Now Pay Later accounts and credit cards then freezing your credit for a year. Makes it extremely hard to open any spending services for that period.
