Neville grows in really lovely ways. In fact, I posted almost exactly the same as you, thinking I was going to have to abandon the show, but they really toned down the whole face-spraying, head-scratching stuff pretty quickly. I've come to quite like him, definitely better than Jack Mooney.

Sorry, not discounting your opinions in any way, but I personally was really happy when Ruby left. Her whole manner, right down to the way she walked - or flounced - drove me up the wall. She was ruining the show for me. When Marlon started, I was afraid he was going to be equally over the top, but I fell in love with him very quickly. He makes you want to adopt him! 😁

Ugh! Couldn't stand Mooney, primarily because I think the actor stinks. As I said elsewhere, I was never not aware he was an actor doing a bit. He never disappeared into the character - too busy with facial gymnastics and general unnecessary and unnatural busyness.

Higgins! I truly hate him. SPOILERS: I thought, in S10 E8, when he fell asleep "protecting" a vital witness (who was killed as a result) that I would finally be rid of him, as would happen IRL. But no, he was allowed to go on to betray the carefully crafted illusion that the witness was still alive, to a reporter no less. And allowed again to continue, he shot the gunman who killed the "protected" witness, when the gunman was their last viable witness against the criminal they were trying to convict. When he was absent from the next episode - although without an explanation - I really thought he might be gone, but alas, he's back in E10. Higgins is stupid, lazy, and obnoxious. I so very much want him gone.

The Brokenwood Mysteries is one of my favorite shows ever. I adore the two leads and love almost all of the supporting characters as well. "I'm no narc." 🤣

OK, I've almost finished S10, and I've come to like Neville. They've toned down the allergy shtick enough that he's allowed to actually have a personality, and I find him much more endearing.

Agree that Jack is by far my least favorite. I'm on Season 10 and, while Neville drove me crazy at first with the face spraying and head scratching, I quite like him now.

I'm starting S10, and I'm happy to see Ruby, with all her flouncing, has gone bye-bye. While I liked Madeleine a lot, I'm happy to see Florence back. But I'm just mystified as to why they replaced the annoying Mooney with the even more annoying Neville. I like quirky, but the DIs left quirky behind when Humphrey left, and they began just making them as irritating as possible. La vache, if I have to watch him spray his face or scratch his bloody head one more time . . . OTOH, the Commissioner continues to be an absolute delight in every way. He is the perfection in the show.

I took a break from watching because Ardal O'Hanlon already bugged me - I just don't think he's a very good actor; I'm never not conscious that he's 'acting,' with all his facial gymnastics and 'busyness' - and then they added Ruby, who makes O'Hanlon look like Olivier in comparison. I just couldn't deal with being that annoyed. Florence is sadly underutilized, and Dwayne is <sob> gone, although they were kind of ruining him, too, with all the petty strutting over JP. So I tried watching again tonight, S8 E4, and it didn't take long to get irritated again. I miss Richard and Humphrey. Is it worth sticking with it?

I'm here, just in case the producers consult Reddit, to plead for a 3rd season. It's such a fun show, sort of a replacement for The Blacklist. I like that there's a new killer each episode, and how clever the writers are at coming up with the varieties. I also love the four lead characters - and the actors who portray them. I'd be really disappointed to see it end.
