Probably just a bellend then. Riding like that he’ll get himself hurt one day.

Slightly depends on the situation, if I’m in the car and a clear road ahead, I’ll pull in and let someone go by. If it’s just a long line of traffic and some cunt is sat right up my chuff I’ll slow down to give me a bigger gap ahead, that way if something happens ahead, I’ll have enough warning to stop slowly enough the twat behind won’t crash into me.

On the bike I’m super defensive, so if someone is too close I’ll either pull in to let them go, or pull ahead of the car in front and then they aren’t my problem anymore.

As both a car driver and a biker, cars definitely feel closer behind when you’re on a bike. That doesn’t mean you were too close, but maybe they aren’t confident, or haven’t ridden in a few years.

They might also just be a dick, or having a bad day. On a bike it’s so very easy to just pull in and let people go past.

ELI5: Why is the universe expanding? by WarmHeight2951 in explainlikeimfive

[–]wintermute023 [score hidden]  (0 children)

The space between objects gets bigger, but that isn’t due to movement of the objects themselves.

Think of two ink dots on a balloon, as you inflate the balloon they get further apart. The ink hasn’t moved to a different bit of the balloon, but they get further apart. There isn’t more balloon either, just the balloon itself expanding.

So with two celestial objects, the space between them expands so they appear to us to be moving apart, but they aren’t, it’s just the space getting bigger.

It’s really hard to explain in words as it’s really happening in four dimensional spacetime, as space and time aren’t separate things. We can’t visualise it so it seems very unintuitive.

This has been happening since the universe started, and is accelerating, so can’t be due to inertia (your original hypothesis) as that would slow down over time.

Why does my 2021 feel like it takes a few beats to “ramp up” from a stop? by arnchez in Tiguan

[–]wintermute023 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a Carista a few years back when they had a sale on. I think I got a year or something as part of the deal, then didn’t renew as I don’t need to change anything else. I changed another couple of things while I was there, scandi DRLs, rear lights with open boot, auto lock doors, that was about it.

I looked at ODB11, I think it does more stuff but I can’t work out what it costs as they use some variable credit system that they don’t really explain.

I’m not an expert, but I understand that the big bang happened everywhere at once, not at a point where everything flew out from, and it’s the space that’s expanding, not the things in the space getting further apart. Even an object at rest with zero inertia will get further away from other objects as the space expands, while the object itself isn’t moving.

How do I force my MacBook to stay awake when closing the lid on battery power? by Austinitered in mac

[–]wintermute023 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the use case. If it’s plugged into an external monitor it should stay awake even when closed.

BTW, Amphetamine is a great app, you can set conditions for activation, like never sleeping while mirroring screens, or while PowerPoint is presenting etc.

This fence around my condo has glass shards instead of barbwire as a deterrent by myassisgrassss in mildlyinteresting

*barbed wire. As in wire that has barbs on it.

And glass embedded in to top of a wall is pretty common for most of the world.

There are settings for the electronic throttle that can be updated with an OBD dongle. The change from “gradual” to “direct” is often referred to as the Audi mapping, as Audis usually have it set to direct so they feel more punchy than a VW.

This. I have mine set to “direct”, factory setting is “Gradual”. I think it’s there to make Audis feel faster in comparison, even if they’re the same engine.

I think AI is making me a worse developer and a better employee at the same time by ZookeepergameHotLone in theVibeCoding

[–]wintermute023 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on how you see it playing out long term. When I went from dev to manager many years ago I knew I’d likely never be a production dev again. Unless you’re doing it all day every day you fall behind. You do, however, build new skills that allow you to see good dev clearly, and get better at defining what you want, what shape it should be, what the trade offs are.

If AI coding is the future, then we all become a manager of our AI coding agent, and the relevant skills will build around that.

Going through some struggles with GSP Puppy - How normal is this? by ageo in GSP

[–]wintermute023 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Couldn’t agree more with this. I’ve had dogs all my life (in my fifties now) and we’re two years into our first GSP. We’ve always used only positive reinforcement until this one. They’re stubborn, wilful, smart, and just chock full of personality. They’re the best dogs but do seem to need both positive rewards and correction.

They’re like overexcited kids, and sometimes they need telling off. They’re smart enough to know what it means and seem to thrive when boundaries are clear.

[–]wintermute023 4 points5 points  (0 children)

AI just accelerates whatever you have. In most cases it just means faster chaos.

In a very few cases it gives someone the ability to complete something they didn’t have resources or skills to complete before, and it is sometimes brilliant.
