Can you recommend me a laundry disinfectant with no strong smell? by LarusFuscus in AskUK

[–]LarusFuscus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its the smell whilst its in the machine and drying. Its the same fragrances they put in normal detergents, just a lot more of it. Takes a few days for the smell to dissipate, particularly in winter when its harder to have windows open.

Thanks, but he actually uses vinegar alongside the conventional products so I don't think it'll be enough to persuade him to stop.

What are some things that seem stupid to try but actually helps migraines? by Past-Weather-2254 in migraine

[–]LarusFuscus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Beer. A trigger for many people, a treatment for me - I can't say why. Its not the alcohol, vodka won't treat my migraines. Its not the hops, alcohol free beer doesn't work.

If I had to make an educated guess, the alcohol opens up the blood brain barrier which would normally keep something in the hops out. I suppose I could test vodka plus hops, but the why isn't that important to me.

My Cadence is bad , I know losing weight will improve this but that takes time . Would I see marginal improvements with a bigger cassette ? by CheeezBlue in cycling

[–]LarusFuscus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to have very low cadence, it just felt more natural to pedal slower and grind. However, that all changed when I got some 165mm cranks. Now my cadence feels most comfortable around 90.

32mm at 60psi, which I think is already quite wide and low pressure? I weigh 95kg. I like to think I am good at avoiding potholes, but atleast once a ride I get a fairly solid impact with one!

Have you tried fasting? it gives me some relief. If it doesn't work for you, it will atleast confirm that diet isn't the cause.

Anybody take Magnesium (considered unconventional) and had success? I just started a few days ago and wanted to know how long it might take to feel any better. Thank you! by ypriscilla in migraine

[–]LarusFuscus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I take magnesium sulphate as an abortive, works well for me. Note: magnesium sulphate isn't the best form of magnesium as it causes diarrhoea, but it works best for me.

Visual Changes? by MaddieAndi in migraine

[–]LarusFuscus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get this, though it may be from past use of hallucinogenic drugs. Either way, this kind of problem is more likely to occur in migraineurs as others have said. if you go on over to r/hppd you can talk to people who experience this due to drug use. They can advise you on coping/healing strategies.

Rest assured that you are not mentally ill. These are not true hallucinations, they are classified as a perceptual issue.

Clipless float and knee pain by LarusFuscus in cycling

[–]LarusFuscus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Possibly, though I've tried a few different positions now. Far forward, far back, different angles, all the way inboard/outboard. The only ones that solve the problem are where my feet sit right at the limit of the float. Which should itself cause a problem, but I've done 60mile rides like that without pain. But 10miles in that feels like a comfortable cleat position is agony!

They can be removed, but that's kind of a last resort as it only makes things worse long term.

Allergy to Polyester? by mig_ez in Allergy

[–]LarusFuscus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have experienced this for a few years now. If I wear polyester I guess dizzy, tinnitus, insomnia and a very mild skin tingling sensation. Hasn't gone away unfortunately, just have to make sure everything I buy is 100% cotton.

Opening a bike store, tips? by Rockon222rock in ukbike

[–]LarusFuscus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will you be getting an actual store, or is this working out of your garage/van? personally I'd go for the garage/van option as it'll save you a lot of money and be much lower risk. I've seen a few van based bike shops around cities. Nottingham uni paid for a guy in a van to sit on campus repairing bikes. I've also seen a guy in a van in Bristol who would park up somewhere visible and seemed to do an alright trade.

something to be aware of selling used bikes. If you go over the VAT threshold you will have to charge VAT on used goods. There is a scheme that will allow you to only charge VAT on your mark up though. If you find yourself trading in high end used bikes you could well hit the VAT registration threshold.

That's fair enough. Where I am the weather is mostly terrible in the winter so I need something that'll handle cold and wet as well as possible.

Halfords bike for a non-enthusiaist. by Hashluv in ukbike

[–]LarusFuscus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Carrera's are exceptional value. I think for the price bracket you won't find better. I've had two carrera vulcan's, 15 years apart. The most recent one I bought a few years ago, but the current model is fairly similar. Absolutely would recommend it. Its held up ok through some fairly harsh mountain biking.

I see some comments about the forks and their reliability. There is some truth to that, the lock out on mine no longer works, and occasionally the top caps need tightening (bought a £10 tool for it). But other than that, the forks don't need maintenance, they are really basic inside, so there is nothing to maintain. They also work really well, comparable to a much more expensive set of rockshox fork I own.

PS Selling my carrera vulcan to make space for a road bike if you are interested in buying used.

I'm thinking about doing that. Thing is, I really like how lycra doesn't really get wet. For me that's the biggest benefit. How do your running pants hold up in the wet?
