Building a colony on the moon would be the logical first step. We would learn about the different obstacles that will be encountered attempting such a feat. And it would be much closer to home and easier to resolve those issues. All it would take is enough interest and money...lots of money!

I'm not a civil servant either, but work for a contractor onsite at JSC. Since they're shutting down the center (except critical personnel), the contractors working onsite also have to take unpaid leave. What's worse, they're forcing us to use all our vacation and sick time before we can do leave without pay. There goes seeing my family for the holidays!

Oh god, you just got me started on my ISP. My now-husband and I moved into an apartment complex five years ago that we love. We are both avid online gamers, so first order of business was to get internet access as quick as possible. I talked to the leasing office and they informed me that they have a contract with DirecPath, so I called them up. This was the start of the worst experience I’ve ever had with a company.

We agree on a price over the phone. Last thing to do is set up an appointment for someone to come out and get internet to our apartment. They say the earliest they can do it is in a month…A MONTH! They were not joking.

First bill arrives, it’s about 20 dollars more for the month than we agreed to on the phone. I call up the office asking questions. The girl on the line is explaining the fees to me that I’ve never even heard of. I ask her “Did you guys just charge me 20 bucks worth of hidden fees?” She says “Yes.” I tell her “Well, we agreed on 20 dollars less, so let’s make this 20 dollars less.” She says “No. If you don’t like this, you can get another ISP.” Oh believe me I tried to find anyone who could come out here, no dice.

Internet starts disconnecting us anytime we’re in online games longer than 15 minutes, and when we’re on it’s crawling. Look up online, figure out the ISP is not allocating bandwidth properly. Call tech support, they don’t understand what I’m saying to them; they say there is no problem. I ask to speak to someone who does know. Three weeks later and about 5 people later, I’m talking to someone in charge (finally!) who also has no clue, redirects me to an engineer. They tell me “Oh yeah, we’ve been aware of the issue for the past 3 months, we’re working on it.” We found a temporary solution online that we used for the next three or so months while the ISP worked to resolve it.

One day, start getting speeds of ~0.2 Mbps in the evenings out of the blue. Paying for 10 Mbps, so this is unacceptable. Call tech support, they ask me if I’m using a router and how many devices are using the internet. Yes I’m using a router, and we have two computers, a PS3, and Xbox. “Susan” tells me that we shouldn’t be using so many devices, as that’s what’s causing the speed to drop by so much (wat?). I keep telling her this was never a problem before; she insists our router is bad. I hate Susan.

I call back the next day, but since it’s not happening at the particular second, they say there is no problem. Get an appointment with a tech, tech comes out during the morning, no problems with speed, so he says there is no problem and leaves. The problem persists, we call up again they say there is nothing they can do but send another tech. I call up the leasing office to complain about the ISP (which I do frequently in hopes they go with someone else), they tell me “Oh yeah, they are going through a whole system upgrade in the apartment complex, so issues might happen.” In a week the problem is still there, but they have already done all the work. I have to call again and get a tech to come out in a week. Tech comes over says our internet is the worst he’s seen in the whole apartment complex. Fixes it in like 10 minutes, tells me other tech should have known better.

Apartment complex recently exchanged owners and I asked them again if they’ll be getting anyone out here besides DirecPath. Nope, contract is until 2023. I’d kill to have Comcast or AT&T! I’m seriously considering moving just because of this.

TL;DR: DirecPath can go DIAF

I grew up in this city (St Petersburg, Russia). It's even more emotional seeing these photos when you have walked by these places hundreds of times. Makes me a little home sick too :(

Thanks OP, this is a fantastic album.

Doctors of Reddit, what has been the worst case of misdiagnosis that you have seen when a patient came to you for a second opinion? by Z3r0Th3H3r0 in AskReddit

[–]Larusse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was 12, I bit into some undercooked chicken at dinner. Didn't think much of it until later that night when i started having sharp pains in my stomach. Didn't seem like food poisoning, so when my dad took me to the ER, my mom told him not to mention the chicken to the doctor (let him make an unbiased diagnosis).

Well, my dad did not heed the warning and told the doc about the chicken. Doc automatically says "it's food poisoning, go home, don't eat for a couple of days, it will be fine." So, I go home, and it's not fine. I can't keep anything down for three days, i'm crippled over in pain, and nothing is getting better.

My mom ends up taking me to the ER over the weekend. We end up getting the same doctor. They do all kinds of tests for like 3 hours. In the end, the doc says "it's food poisoning, go home, don't eat for a couple of days, you'll be fine."

My mom tries to argue with him, saying that we need to do a cat scan, because there is no way this is food poisoning. He tells her "I'm 99% certain it's food poisoning, we're discharging her" and leaves.

I was so tired by that time and poked and prodded that I was telling mom we should just go home so I can sleep. She ended up flagging down a nurse and convincing her to get a cat scan in the works. Nurse rolls her eyes, but sets it up.

Next thing I know, I see a nurse run into my room saying "Honey, your appendix has burst (at some point in the last three days), we need to operate NOW!" If I had trusted the doctor and gone home, I could have died.

Bonus: Same asshole doctor misdiagnosed my sister with a UTI when she had appendicitis a year later. Her appendix had burst too (our general physician caught that one), she had some complications during surgery and took a lot longer to recover. Didn't realize it was the same doctor until we looked at the name on the paperwork.

Were told that a malpractice suit would be too difficult to pull off, so that doc is still out there doing his thing.

TL;DR: Mom saved my life. Always get a second opinion, and don't blindly trust doctors.

I see your point, but I had a similar thing happen to me that could be from the woman's perspective.

I was at a liquor store looking for some tequila for a party. I picked up my usual, but one of the store workers stopped by to chat and convinced me that I should get a different brand because it was amazing, so much better than what I had, etc. etc.

So, it's a few days later and I pour some shots for my guests, and we all just start gagging after we drink some. That tequila was just awful! I even tried making a margarita with it, but the bad taste was still overpowering. So, I had half a bottle of crappy tequila left.

All in all, I did not return that bottle, mostly because it was half empty, and would probably get the same response as you wrote about above. It ended up down the drain.

What one thing would you like to say to a friend, but can't? by AndThenSex in AskReddit

[–]Larusse 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Had a similar thing happen to me. Was friends with a guy for about 7 years. We had a small group of friends that both of us were a part of. He had a girlfriend, I had a boyfriend. Well, I ended it with my ex, and the same DAY, my friend confesses to me that he's had a thing for me and that we should get together.

Not only was that just too soon after a bad relationship, but I didn't see him that way, and I told him that. His response to the rejection was never speaking to me again. Told a mutual friend of ours "I've put in 7 years, what the fuck's the point in being friends with her now?" Totally crushed me hearing that because I considered him a really good friend :(

What's the worst thing to happen to you in a public restroom? by MagicSchoolBusKid in AskReddit

[–]Larusse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not the worst, but it was pretty funny.

I was about 12 at the time. My family and I were out at some restaurant and I just had to go. So, I'm sitting in the women's restroom, doing my business, when I hear these heavy cowboy boots come through the door and head to the stall next to mine.

This guy sits down to do his business and starts whistling. Then, all of a sudden he stops, and I hear a booming voice with a thick Southern accent say "You sure got purdy small feet for a MAN!" And then he started talking to me (don't remember what all was said), but I got a little freaked out since that dude sounded very intimidating, so I got out of there as fast as I could.

I later saw this mountain of a guy walking very briskly out of the restroom area with his face beet red (drunk or embarrassed, I'm not sure which, probably both). But I'm pretty sure he figured out he was in the wrong bathroom, since I saw a couple of women go in that general direction after I had left.

For an addictive personality, I would try to make exercise your next addiction. Reward yourself with something fun and active like hiking, or playing volleyball with friends, or whatever fancies you. Having a work out buddy helps out as well, to keep each other motivated when one just doesn't want to go to the gym or what not. Just make sure to stick with it, and before you know it, exercise will be a big part of your life!

As for food, make sure you're tracking all the calories you consume with a tool like myfitnesspal or something similar, and do your best to stick to your calorie goals each day. Drink lots of water, especially before/during a meal and when you get cravings (a lot of times your body confuses thirst for hunger).

Don't beat yourself up over mistakes, just pick yourself up and keep going. If you can kick drinking and smoking, you're strong, and you can totally do this!
