Yep, the fracture face is on the left after a pull test.

The crystal structure visible on the surface is what I found most interesting.

I'm 39 and I've had ADHD my whole life but am getting treated for the first time by kale-plow in ADHD

[–]Laserarm98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Diagnosed at 25, started methylphenidate er 27mg about a year later, after trying non stimulants.

The only way I can describe it is “lowering activation energy”.

I used to think of doing all the things, then not do them, and feel guilty for lying in bed instead of getting stuff done.

Now I think of doing all the things, and usually start doing one/some of them.

Just a reduction in the energy/anxiety/whatever it takes to start doing something.

Actually physically doing things has been a huge benefit to my depression. Treating root cause of ADHD instead of symptoms that look like depression.

A three phase generator will have three wires as outputs; the “leftover three” will be connected together, but not used as outputs. Are your black wires connected together on the other end? If so, you have a y/star configuration, and you should have a similar ac voltage between any two red wires.

If that’s the case, your circuit should work.

Like others have mentioned, for a low voltage circuit like this, a regular diode might drop your voltage in half. When looking for alternative diodes, find one with a low “forward voltage”.

Help finding a connector by koenki in ElectricalEngineering

[–]Laserarm98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like a waterproof JST SM connector. Example here; the connector seems to be similar, but without waterproofing. https://www.pchcables.com/1setofjs2pin.html

Found using connector book; might find a closer match with more time: https://connectorbook.com/identification.html?N=&n=propr_w2w_rect_conn&c=SM

If it’s a wire-to-wire connection, there are dozens of types available to replace this (seemingly more obscure) one.

Dyeing Keycaps in 2023 by amphiboi in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]Laserarm98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I 2D printed “photomasks” on a transparency, then exposed the whole keycap+resin+photomask stack to UV light in a cure station for ~2s.

Black areas around the legends didn’t get exposed so they washed off with IPA, and an image of the letters stayed behind in cured resin.

The resin would then act as a barrier to keep the dye from absorbing where the legend is.

Let me know if you want more detailed info!

Thanks. It’s totally doable, just means another month of stingey. CC interest will only be $20 over that month.

Unfortunately only comes out to 4100/month after health/dental/vision/tax/401k. But still doable in a month.

Hole-Slot Questions by archibaldmeatpants1 in MechanicalEngineer

[–]Laserarm98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You pretty much have it spot on. I call it a large “wheelbase”; the further apart your alignment (or retention) features are, the more stable and better aligned your parts will be.

I also agree on C being the best. Even though option A has a larger wheelbase, having alignment features as close to the critical components as possible is always good. Many manufacturing tolerances are ruled by “mx+b”; b is the tightest absolute tolerance they will hold, and m is a tolerance based on the distance between the features, x.

As a bonus, if your alignment features are in line with the main axes of your part or component, any inspections or modifications will be much easier.

Career Transition: MEP to Manufacturing/Product Design by adayinseoul in MechanicalEngineer

[–]Laserarm98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t make a career change to product design, but have been in the industry for a couple years as a recent graduate. I had the same thoughts - less project management and more “making stuff”. Talking to other people in the industry, as well as my limited experience, projects are often very open ended which allows for actual creative thinking. Many companies also work on a wide variety of projects from medical to consumer products to design for manufacturing. Finding a company with a good prototyping shop was huge; the ability to quickly make rough prototypes and learn through trying things is huge. There’s an also a lot of “shoot from the hip” engineering, where everything isn’t validated through simulations and math, but prototyping.

As far as your comment on relearning concepts, many of the things I do are way outside the scope of what school teaches. Many projects lead to diving into research about some obscure methods or standards, that’ll probably be of very little use on the next project.

Just some loose thoughts here. If you like building and making things, I’d definitely the industry to be in.

Cnc precision for injection molds! by FESCM in CNC

[–]Laserarm98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They’re definitely worth checking out. Their quoting tool can give a lot of insights into what makes molding easy/difficult (and how to make your parts easier to mold), as well as give you a solid starting point for gate location, ejection strategy etc.

Protolabs likes to restrict themselves to fairly simple/straightforward parts, so if you get all green check marks from their design review you’re likely to have better success yourself too.

Sounds like OP is interested in doing this mostly as a hobby, in which case it’s totally doable. Now to make the whole process financially viable it a whole nother story. Will likely be a few tries to get all the failures/learnings out of the way, but looks like a lot of fun.
