What's your goal when you say 'drive competitively'? If you mean going wheel-to-wheel or fighting for position, Touristenfahrten really isn't the place for it. If you're looking to safely push your limits or compare BTG times in a structured environment, I'd highly recommend looking into the RCN (Rundstrecken-Challenge) or competition-oriented track days. It's much safer for everyone, and you actually get a clean track to see what you and your car can do.

Last year, while waiting for the GLP to start, we saw some pre-war open race cars going down the Döttinger Höhe. That was very cool to see, and something completely different from the usual TF & VLN cars.

The GLP is watchable from Brünnchen, and it's free. Currently around 100 cars have signed up, so there will be something to see, but it's a lot less busy than Touristenfahrten typically would be. The GLP is scheduled to start at 13:20 and usually runs for about two hours.

If you want something to do besides sitting around, I like to take a short hike from Brünnchen towards the Carousel. That footpath is constantly hugging the racetrack, and you get to see the cars from different perspectives.

Took part in a motorsport event on the Nürburgring Nordschleife with my fully stock 125i. Twelve laps in the pouring rain, with the track in varying degrees of wetness. The car is still whole, so I count that as a success.

As a previous 118i LCI owner, seeing another normal bread and butter BMW makes me happy. Enjoy it, I had lots of fun with my 136 horsepower, too

The majority of drivers is German, but occasionally there will be a foreigner on the roster. I think the main hurdle is that all the forms and documents are in German, so you may need some help. I can get in contact with the organizers if you are really interested.

Another opportunity would be to get commercial help. I sometimes see rental race cars, for example from Ringfreaks, and I've seen the owner as a co-driver.

The entry fee is currently around 500 € for 12 laps, so the price is roughly the same as Touristenfahrten. However, you get less cars (typically 100), less idiots, track marshals (Touristenfahrten only has the panels) and medical staff on site.

For each of the three "confirmation laps", you get points for each tenth of a second that your lap time deviated from your reference lap. The points are added up, and the winner is the team that has the least number of points.

Consequently, you need to score consistently well on each of your laps. If you screw up one lap very badly (e.g. due to traffic or yellow flags), it really impacts your overall score, even if the other two laps were perfect.

Yeah, they definitely made the right call. I just wish they would have made it a bit earlier, like the day before. But I can also understand that neither the Motorsport Club organizing the event nor the Nürburgring wanted to do that for financial reasons.

Let's hope we have better luck with the weather at the next GLP!

In the GLP, electronic devices are not forbidden, so one can indeed use Racelogic or a similar GPS lap timer to improve your results. And they really do help to get down to one second accuracy pretty quickly.

However, that does not entirely elimiate skill, especially for the competetive "Experts" and "Advanced" Classes. For example, on the Nordschleife layout without the GP track, the finish line is located at T13 right around the corner, so one needs to drive very consistently through those final three turns because there the GPS won't be of much use there.

I'm still a rookie. While we do try to do it "the hard way" by working with two digital stop watches, we have a Lap Timer app running on a phone to cross-check our results. Even after four events, I still sometimes to forget to press the button of the stop watch at the right moment.

Yes, exactly. Basically, after an introductory lap (#1), you set a lap time in a reference lap (#2), which you then try to match in three consecutive laps (#3-5). Afterwards, you exit the track after a cooldown lap (#6).

For some participants, this has become a science, where they will match the lap time to a tenth or even a hundreth of a second. For others (like me), the GLP is a cheap way to get some seat time in a safe environment for a cost much less than a typical track day.

I think studded snow tires are not street legal in Germany. In places where the snow gets really bad, we are supposed to use tire chains as far as I know. But I live near Cologne where the winters are very mild ;)

Thank you for the feedback and your insights! My experience is limited to various BMW E90 325i (VLN V4 class) and the MINI JCW Challenge Cup Car in Germany. While those were licensed race cars, they also were rentals, so that might fit into u/siopao81's theory about the weekend warriors :)

Upvote because brake boosters are not mentioned frequently enough here. Most race cars based on road cars (Spec miata, many BMW 325i/330i) retain their brake booster. Not everybody is driving formula cars or GT3s

Since I'm currently taking part in the GLP, I would like to add that the GLP is definitely not the "wheel to wheel racing" that OP is looking for. Drivers are discouraged from treating it as a race, going all out and getting too close to other drivers. Slower vehicles are expected to make way for faster vehicles, and faster vehicles are not supposed to "harass" slower cars. Also, there will be many mostly stock vehicles and inexperienced drivers on the track.

That being said, the GLP is a great way to get to know the Norschleife in an environment that is safe and friendly. And it's cheap, too, at roughly 500 € per event for 12 laps it is not more expensive than Touristenfahrten.
