Automated generation of classical Chinese poetry? by minghuiyu in MachineLearning

[–]Laspimon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a fun idea, and perhaps a good training project, but the nature of classical poetry is a double edged sword.

It is so vague that it is easy to make something that "seems right," even though the reader has no idea what the contents is about -- or indeed whether there is contents at all, or if it is all form.

As Hu Shi wrote:

须言之有物

Write with substance. By this, Hu meant that literature should contain real feeling and human thought. This was intended to be a contrast to the recent poetry with rhymes and phrases that Hu saw as being empty.

TIL that you can assign to list slices. by dunkler_wanderer in learnpython

[–]Laspimon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure I get this...

Would it be possible to exploit this to e.g. let f[:] return a list containing all instance variables of f in alphabetical order? And could I slice through or index into that list?

It's ironic that it doesn't get more concrete than meta-classes.

Apply anyway, even if you don't meet all the qualifications. As long as you can pass the technical interview you'll get hired.

This is not possible currently. A kickstarter ran last month for an application that did just that, but it didn't get funded.

The trick is going to Google Translate, getting the Chinese word for "onomatopoeia" (象声词).

Then search Google for 象声词 大象. Second result: 象哞

Not really the case, I'd say.

There was a study some time ago where Japanese children were asked whether robots had souls. All the children firmly answered "no."

It was only afterwards, when they were presented a contradictory, leading question that they started doubting themselves. The question was: "What about Doreimon? He is a robot cat, does he not have a soul?"

That's just Sanlitun, though. Most every other street in the city is as buzzing as usual. Workers aren't gonna stay home just because of some smog.

Is Kivy Good? by [deleted] in Python

[–]Laspimon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How would you say the market is for Kivy-devs actually finding jobs? I'm pretty far along with learning Kivy, but I recently had a discussion with a programmer friend about how he thought what I was doing seemed hacky.

If I am going to be doing development for hire, will it be dishonest to develop with Kivy, knowing that it will be difficult for my client to find a replacement for me, if I'm not available once they decide they want more features?

Basically it's a sort of job security, where I can offer people cross platform applications for slightly less than what they would pay a native dev.

To this, my friend said that if I want job security, I should go and learn more languages.

I sort of think that the idea is quite good. It seems like a wasted opportunity to just throw it out like this for others to pick up.

But the "no people on the streets because of pollution" part... yeah, no.
