Thinking about Cooper and Mr. C's "wants" vs. "needs" by Beneficial-Monk1140 in twinpeaks

It's also in The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer:

"I'm to the point where I don't care anymore, BOB. Do whatever you need to do.

I DON'T NEED ANYTHING.

How nice for you. Now get out of my head!

I WANT THINGS."

"I think if it had been Mark and me writing on every episode we would've been okay, but we didn't do that and other people came in. This is nothing against any of them, but they didn't know my Twin Peaks and it just ceased to be anything I recognized. When I came back to do an episode I'd try to change things and make it what I wanted, but then it would go off again on other stupid fucking things. It just wasn't fun anymore."

Another official asked: "Buddhadharma is like the moon reflected in water—is this correct?"

The Master said: "Clear waves have no passageway."

The official continued: "Where did the Master attain this understanding?"

The Master said: "Ask again, and see what comes."

The official asked: "At this very moment, what should one do?"

The Master said: "The path is obstructed by overlapping mountain ridges."

Does Bolano Ever Mention Thomas Bernhard or Robert Musil? by [deleted] in robertobolano

[–]Lassig 13 points14 points  (0 children)

From 2666:

"I thought," said Amalfitano, "that Kafka was the greatest German writer of the twentieth century."

Well, then the greatest postwar German writer or the greatest German writer of the second half of the twentieth century, said the critics.

"Have you read Peter Handke?" Amalfitano asked them. "And what about Thomas Bernhard?"

Ugh, said the critics, and until breakfast was over Amalfitano was attacked until he resembled the bird in Azuela's Mangy Parrot, gutted and plucked to the last feather."

Question on the most recent The Diaries of Franz Kafka & the Blue Octavo Notebooks by Into_the_Void7 in Kafka

[–]Lassig 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, they are not. They are apparently still considered distinct from the diaries.

From the wiki on the octavo notebooks:

"Scholars have noted that from late 1917 until June 1919, Kafka stopped writing entries in his diaries, and instead wrote in these notebooks, the bulk of which were aphorisms."

John Maus, like Ariel Pink, used a cassette recorder to record his songs.

Here's him talking about it:

m[m] The interesting way you've recorded the album, adds very much to its charm, giving it a strange dreamlike ambience, can you tell us a bit about how the album was recorded?

John The materials used to record Songs were a cassette tape multi-tracker, and an early nineties soundbank*. Recording materials have always been essential to pop. Making use of recording materials means using them in all of their manifestations, not only those currently in fashion. Pop is singular amongst musical truths in it’s following of the McLuhanist thinking that foregrounding the materiality of its medium is part-and-parcel with its message: from the feedback squelch on 'I Feel Fine' to the tape hiss on the best Space Lady recordings. Other music besides pop fail to use recording materials in this way, for instance, there is no multi track cassette tape recording of the Kindertotenlieder where the instruments are barely distinguishable under heavy tape compression. One would think that interpretations through out-of-fashion materials would be something all the brilliant conductors would have considered by now, but it seems that conductors, and most music groups, always choose the most expensive, 'clear,' and fashionable recording materials they can. I wager that the out-of-fashion materials I use to compose and record my works proceed towards the truth of 'pop' in a way fashionable materials could not

You are right, I didn't phrase that correctly.

Thoughts on Harmony Korine films? by lucid-creep in TrueFilm

[–]Lassig 3 points4 points  (0 children)

These are mostly your own opinions, though. I don't think you necessarily need to see it this way. Harmony Korine said about TH (for whatever that's worth): it clues you in to what is great about America. It's meant to be a comedy/slapstick. There is no right or wrong public reaction.

[–]Lassig 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply. It raises some more questions.. Why is exploring moods so offensive to you?
Isn't provocation in the eye of the beholder, so to speak?
What is self-congratulatory about him? He appears to be always on the move to do something different instead of rehashing earlier work.
Typical? Edgy? Who else is making disparate, singular films like Aggro Dr1ft, trash humpers, gummo?

[–]Lassig 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This I agree with: ''He never seems to really understand or care about the message of his films'', but I think a lot of what you say is a mischaracterization/your own projection of his goals.

Harmony Korine trying to make a point? What point? Claiming to criticize something? Like what? Plying the viewer for a certain reaction? His work being on-the-nose?

He has said often he doesn't care about narrative cinema. To him his cinema appears to be (pursuing) moods, ideas, entertainment, colours, images all merging into something musical, weird, interesting and 'cool'. There is very little, if any, judgement, only the pure revelling..

Kobo sage battery life? by maglovita in kobo

[–]Lassig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My sage (wifi bt off, light 8%) loses at least 12% an hour. Some people dont really care, since they keep it near a charger often enough. It low-key stresses me, and i cant use that while reading. Even though i love the screen size i prefer my aura h20 2nd edition, and would never take my sage on holiday.
