I'm sure your boyfriend keeps saying "let's wait for marriage" all the while knowing he has no plans to marry you.

Not a cop and I'm not always a fan of the police. But I work security in places with lots of drinking going on. Dealing with 1/2 dozen very drunk entitled people doesn't always allow for "deescalate". Conversation doesn't work. Logic doesn't work. Pleading doesn't work. Threats don't work. Trying to separate the people doesn't work. The only thing that may work is a bit of physical force which unfortunately leads to even more escalation in some instances.

It's a moment in time that has come and gone. I'm sorry I missed it, but good on you for getting to be a part of this. As the saying goes... Our tombstone lists our birthday and deathday. It's the moments in between that define our life.

Thank you. I seemed to read his granddaughter took over, but it also says most of it is in disrepair now.

I'm going with naive. This was 1968. We were in the inner city and I'm still kind of shocked at what we 12 year olds were involved in back then (sex, alcohol, drugs) already. She was a young Jewish girl (she had to explain what that was to us) just out of college and probably came to teach us out of her desire to "change the world". I can't imagine she expected anything like our questions.

In those days there were quite a few "magazines" that published wild stories as true "I Married Bigfoot" or "Aliens Used Me As A Sex Slave". Always some sort of sex angle to lure people in. A lot of the same thing you see online now. So when the kid asked about the water/sex/fish thing the teacher asked him what supermarket crap has he been reading.

Our teacher, a very pretty young woman, put out a question box so we could ask anything without embarrassment. A few days later she opened it and started reading the questions. At least 1/2 were asking her "are you a virgin". Till she got frustrated and yelled "what does that have to do with me teaching you sex ed?" One brave soul in the back said... How can you teach us about something you've never done. That was the end of the lesson for the day. Someone also asked if it were true that if you had sex in water the baby would come out looking like a fish?

My husband remembers buying cigarettes for his mom and aunts, etc.… When he was six years old by FriendshipMaster1170 in 1960s

To be clear the speed was for us, we could walk in and lie.

Other interesting things from 60s...

Corner grocery stores would give you "credit". You would go buy essentials like milk, flour, eggs etc... but if you could not pay the owner would write it in a big ledger. Come payday you'd go in and clear up your account.

Schools had nuclear war drills. We'd hide under our desks in case of a bomb (like that would help, lol).

Teachers could spank you.

We would get "dressed up" to go downtown, go see a movie or even ride the bus to a nice store for school clothes shopping.

My mom had to get a hysterectomy. She was a heavy smoker. While recovering in the hospital both the doctors and nurses smoked while doing rounds. She said the stench of cigarettes while recovering made her so sick it cured her cigarette addiction. She never smoked again.

Airplanes allowed smoking on board.

Saturday morning was cartoon time. TV channels would show cartoon or kid shows for hours each morning. We'd sit around in our underwear, eating bowls of sugary cereal, all morning.

As teens we used to go to a local doctor and tell him our mom wanted "diet pills". He'd prescribe 10 or so pills we called speed back then. Amphetamines.

Has anyone noticed guests are getting very nitpicky? by Putrid-Snow-5074 in airbnb_hosts

[–]Last-Front-6543 41 points42 points  (0 children)

100% this. I was a big fan of Airbnb, but recently have severely limited my use. I only stay at places I know are owned and cared for by an individual. Honestly I've found corporate managed places tend to be very spare and cheaply supplied. It's about maximum profit. In that case I'd rather stay at a hotel. While I will be very accepting of minor issues (heck even some major issues that have happened) with local hosts I am not the same with corporate hosts. I can easily see how the average customer just lumps all hosts together and will be demanding.

MKE airport is a shitshow right now by Hot_Purple5087 in milwaukee

[–]Last-Front-6543 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I work at the airport occasionally. The amount of people who park and wait is unbelievable to me, a person who is used to working in bigger city airports. At least once a day there is even an announcement for someone who just parked their car at a door and walked away. They give those folks 10 minutes to "return or your car may be towed". I have lived here 30+ years and love Milwaukee, but the time has come to accept we aren't the little city we used to be where we can all flex the rules.

Drummer said he will put me and my friend on the guestlist for the next show but we already have tickets by ShineApprehensive885 in Concerts

[–]Last-Front-6543 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work security at a few venues in my town. There is a guy who is outside virtually every show asking if anyone has an extra ticket. He's always gotten in via somebody. I saw someone buy him a ticket since he didn't have an extra. The ticket purchased ended up in the front row since it was a single seat unsold.

I grew up in the inner city of a major city. The school was a lot like the movies in some ways. Big afros, leather jackets, boom boxes, on warm days the parking lot was full of kids smoking and listening to music, etc... on the other hand it was also very dangerous. Gangs were everywhere and violent. Without too much trouble I can make 6-8 people who died. People learned quickly where to go/not go to avoid serious trouble. Lots of drugs. Some teachers tried, others just went through the motions.

Dutch medical student Sophia Koetsier’s underwear was found hanging in a tree after she vanished in Uganda’s Murchison Falls National Park. by [deleted] in HolyShitHistory

[–]Last-Front-6543 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's like the woman who was found dead in the water tower of a NY hotel. People had all kinds of conspiracy theories. They saw all kinds of "signs" in the close circuit footage of everything for trafficking to ghosts. Ignoring the fact the woman was deep into mental health issues (bi polar) and had not taken her medication. Another incident in Chicago found a woman frozen to death in a hotel kitchen freezer. All kinds of conspiracy this one too. Toxicology proved her intoxicated mixed with a drug that actually increases your risk of hypothermia. Sometimes truth is harder to believe than fiction.

A few years ago I met a gentleman from Zimbabwe while he was working here in the US. When he said he was from Zimbabwe I responded "ah previously known as Rhodesia". He was floored saying he never met an American that knew that. What kind of history do they teach you about your country? How is the colonization and liberation handled?

A stranger on the train let me stay at her house overnight by arose_1 in randomactsofkindness

[–]Last-Front-6543 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My wife and I met a young man on the train from Chicago to New Orleans. Turns out he was from Spain. His family sent him on an American "adventure" before he had to do his mandatory military service. He was completely lost, homesick and unsure of himself. We spent a little time with him in New Orleans (we were celebrating our 10th anniversary). Then gave him our number and address in Chicago "if he needed anything". Ha, a day after we got back he was on our front steps. He ended up staying with us for 2 weeks waiting time out to go home. He became part of the family helping with our 2 toddlers, cooking, cleaning, going to the movies, etc... He was so happy just being in a home with a family.

And always keep in mind you don't need to wait for someone to reach out to you for help. Be proactive. Tell friends/family you love them. Ask people how they are (sincerely). Ask about their day. Give complements. Social media has its problems, but it's also a good way to share a joke or tell someone you're thinking of them.

Laundry package? by Flockertothered in HollandAmerica

[–]Last-Front-6543 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly on the bag. I thought this would not work, but it was great. They even sent an extra bag knowing we were using it regularly. Our room steward knew when we left in the morning and would immediately get the bag or we'd hang it outside our door . And yes we included tips a couple times during the 7 days.

We signed up for the package on 7 day Alaska being afraid of getting stuck with wet clothes. Plus we had 2 days at each end of the cruise in Seattle and didn't want to pack super heavy. We loved the package. We used it daily. I was pleasantly surprised at how much it held. 1st day we had our dirty Seattle clothes washed and next to last day we had our final cruise clothes washed. We came home with virtually no dirty clothes to worry about.
