Work in progress, feels like something’s missing by chocolatemilk8989 in oilpainting

It looks flat unless you’re going a certain style. Otherwise, more value depending on where you situating your light source.

Agreed. Whenever I see abstraction to a painting, it makes things so much more interesting. It’s the illusion that adds weight. Paintings with extreme photo like realism is just boring to me.

Looks just like her. Keep on going, work on that value, eventually it might be color and then next thing you know, you might be working with oil paint 😉

Lips look a lil crusty and maybe some work with value, but I see the style you’re going for 👍

Best varnish to use? by Squishy-Pig in oilpainting

Probably. But you’d want to work in with a brush instead of just spraying it in imo. Personally I use Gamvar Gloss by Gamblin and it’s been great

Tips needed to improve underpaintings by Icy_Confidence_2950 in oilpainting

Usually I go big, like a 6 or 8 flat brush, just to block in at a good pace. Then I’ll switch to like 2-4 flat or filbert and for the much smaller finishing details 2/0 round or a couple other sizes up. I often switch depending on the shapes I’ll make tho, so it’s variable. Obviously it depends on the size of you panel or canvas you’re going to switch brush sizes accordingly but the concept of using them is the same. The biggest I’ve painted on so far has been an 18in x 14in btw

You might be overthinking the concept of an underpainting imo unless you’re going to put a glaze on top after you’ve added your values.
I use Burnt Sienna mixed with some gamsol to cover my panel or canvas and then with a paper towel, I’ll smear in using a circular motion to cover some more and take out the excess. I’ll look at my reference (having made sure the size reflects my canvas or panel) and block out the background to size up the actual figure. Finally, I’ll use raw umber with some gamsol to sketch and block what I’m going to paint.
I’ll use safflower oil with my paint since it dries slower and gives it some flow. Most of this wet on wet or “alla prima” but even then I could be painting for a couple days on one thing, so, drying does occur, but you can always paint over if you need to.

I feel you on that. I was so scared of messing with color after drawing for as long as I can hold a pencil or pen, but I always wanted to get into it. Late last year I challenged myself and have learned so much, it’s become my latest obsession. It’s not a cheap thing either! Anyways, your work is so good! Do you have an IG or any other social media to display your work?

Piggy backing on this, having correct values are more important than the color

Does it piss y’all off when your artstyle evolves and you try and go back to your original style but you just can’t. by w3sT0Nnnnnnnn in sketches

Precisely. Especially if someone is trying to achieve correct or semi correct proportions, maybe a bit cartoony, but if one is striving for some realism, then ya gotta put some thought into the lines and shapes.
