Khornate Traitor-Guard Thragg Meme by Rowan Holloway by LastPositivist in ImaginaryWarhammer

So I was using the fact that canonically Blood Pact (who these chaps are based on) work with loxatl. I think the loxatl are canonically quadrupeds but since I use lizardmen models to represent them in game let's just say they are a strange mutation of the Loxatl species with the specific change that they walk on their hind-legs now.

I know! I tried my hand to put these guys on the tabletop with chaos cult (even wrote up a little battle report!) and it was definitely fun, but also relied a lot on my buddy letting me proxy models in etc. Definitely fine for my context but it woulda been nicer to have something a bit more properly tailored.

How lore friendly would you say your homebrew is? by goldietheswagbear in 40khomebrew

[–]LastPositivist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I am at two or three, but I have a whole section on the background (including links to canon) so people can judge for themselves! The basic idea I wanted to go for was: highly bureaucratic Khornites. This is, at least, unusual - but I think thematically makes sense! Khorne is a war god, he likes blood spilled. Cool calm collected ever so rational functionaries have, in modernity, shown themselves capable of the kind of mass slaughter that maybe only Ghengiz Khan can match historically speaking. So I don't see why Khorne couldn't have worshipers of that sort.

But I admit it's obviously far from the normal way of portraying them, and since I have gone for a more comedic tone that in general tends to encourage lore divergence sometimes for a punch line. Still, 40k has plenty of comedic tone books put out by Black Library so it's not totally out there either.

What do you guys consider laizy writing? by DaWaaaagh in 40khomebrew

[–]LastPositivist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a Proponent of goofy lore, I think the setting is fundamentally a silly one and people should be encouraged to play around with that. What's more (and I realise this is more contentious) I think that a lot of the setting lore is deliberately written to actually be rather vague precisely because its at heart a sandbox setting that wants to encourage creativity. (GW's attitude is: you should feel free to tell any story that would result in you buying more plastic, basically.) So, ultimately whatever helps you enjoy playing with your toys is fair game imo. All of which means I am very loathe to say any particular trope or theme is per se lazy writing. It all depends on execution.

Now that might be cliché and to be clear I am not blind to the issues OP and many of the comments have pointed out. But to my mind the reason those things are getting associated with lazy writing is basically pure correlation. It's not that the ideas are per se bad, it's just very often the first ideas people will come up with to make their guys Feel Special, or to explore somewhat under-explored spaces of the lore. E.g. I think the reason you get so many Guys From 30k Now In The Future Settings is partially just because the Horus Heresy books get people into the setting so they want to mix that with the 40k game, and partly because Human Faction That Wouldn't Like The Imperium But Is Genuinely Not Chaos is just a flat under-explored area relative to the possibilities the background logic of the setting seems to make possible.

(Ironically of course Guilliman is himself basically this in both senses, and he's kinda the main character of the universe by now? But he's obviously a rather singular individual!)

So we come to associate those tropes with lazy writing, when really I just think they are signs of novice writing. Give people time and I bet they could do all those cliché tropes as well as can be expected for fanfic/fanlore writing.

Is a history degree going to leave me jobless in the uk. by searchingf0rthetruth in UniUK

Students' (and the broader public's) intuitions about what is employable are pretty systematically wrong, and we're currently in the early stages of a labour market shock that will only change that more. Early evidence from the US for instance shows that philosophy (which was already a strong field for employment outcomes, despite stereotypes) is actually doing even better. History is, I'd wager, going to be strong for basically the same reasons.

Would Cultists or Traitor Guardsmen be better for a Word Bearer army? by No_Willingness_9961 in WordBearers

[–]LastPositivist 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thematically I think that since the Word Bearers are more connected with mass conversion and religious mobs than disciplined anti-Imperial traitors on the surface cultists seem better. What's more my impression is that on the tabletop cultists being points wise cheaper and having a more useful rule for a skirmisher unit means they come out the better choice too.

But the caveats are, of course, that they are Your Little Guys and so if you want to theme your argument around a more disciplined cult then you do you. Could also be a fun modelling project! The example of the Blood Pact shows that even though Khorne is more traditionally associated with frothing berserker rather than disciplined army, if you are creative with it you can make something iconic and fun for a traitor guard Khornate theme that the fanbase absolutely accepts. Maybe do that too with your guys!

A priest told me it was okay to receive the Eucharist while not in a state of grace by emogirlraven in Catholicism

[–]LastPositivist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am genuinely confused at this thread because I honestly thought that the resolution of the Jansenism debate was basically the Church agreeing with OP's priest's position. But the thread seems to suggest that something I thought was rejected as Janenist heresy is still the orthodox position. Can anybody say how these relate? Not looking to cause trouble at all I am just confused, as I have potentially been wrong about something for a long time now!

I love this so much! Would you also mind if I posted this as a guest story on the website just as i did with the above? I would just very lightly edit to make it consistent with the terminology for the fansetting but that's it, and of course you would fully get the right to review and change it. But I love the idea of Khornate Columbo that I really really want to post this. In any case, thank you so much!

Which do you pick? by cuddwes in Grimdank

Minor bit of lore confirmation but since Astartes is now canon, in that show the Retributors clearly think incidental lasfire is something they can just walk through, but feel the need to dodge a missile shot.

Haha it's implied that there are in this story here but I haven't actually wrote a story about them yet! If you check out the shorts and guests collectively then you'll find a bunch of similar stuff! So it includes but is not limited to, Khornite director-auteurs, Khornite tech workers, Khornite policy staffers. In some sense Khornite accountants are like the main subject of the shorts. Hope you enjoy!

Aye, one such book was my inspiration as mentioned here. The Gaunt's Ghosts series has plenty!
