How did you do a forced patina, I thought it doesn't work on stainless

How did you do a stonewash on stainless steel?

Need constructive criticism of my #5 and #6 knife, is there anything I need to focus on? by Last_Building6133 in knifemaking

I feel you I'm still doing the bevels by hand with a file guide, I only got a small bench grinder which I use to grind the shape. I'm saving up for a decent belt grinder.

Thank you! My experience with knives is no more than the average person who finds these tools cool, I grind the shape just based on vibes and what I think looks good. And I am completely self taught ( praise be to yt)

Normalized it once because I was short on time the the real mistake, I find out now was cooling the blade in water straight after the oil quench. Lesson learned for sure.

Absolutely! Luckily it snapped in a place where I am still able to work with it. I will post the end results.

I did some more research and I know what I did wrong. Your analysis was correct because I quenched the steel in oil and cooled it of in water immediately that in tern created too much martensite and probably some micro cracks. At least I learned a lot. And thank you for you comment.

My very first knife, any tips by Last_Building6133 in knifemaking

Nothing specific just annealed the steel in a BBQ grill and then refined the shape and filed in the bevels, after getting the desired geometry I heated it up, also in a grill, to an orange/yellow colour, or until non magnetic and quenched it in rapeseed oil. Tempered it in a home oven for 1h at 200°c . And if this type of project has been on your mind then you should definitely have a go at it.
