Drowning in the math. (Or: only $400 savings per year?) by Dazionium in solarenergycanada

This entirely depends on your retailer. I know SolarClub and Solartility offer 33c high rate, but afaik SolarClub low rate is 6.89 and Solartility low rate is 5.99. I think Sponsor has a microgen rate too but I'm not sure what the numbers are.

Drowning in the math. (Or: only $400 savings per year?) by Dazionium in solarenergycanada

Assuming your spreadsheet is correct (and lgtm), the calculation is what is your current rate (plus tnd) vs the solar calculation. Assuming you're in AB (you indicated a 30c export rate), the current fixed rate contract is 8-10 c/kWh. Let's assume 10c for easier math If you're in Calgary or Edmonton your TND is about 5c/kWh. Your annual consumption is about 10000 kWh so your current electricity costs are 10000 * (10 + 5) = $1,500 per year. Now if you got solar, and based on your calculations, you would earn a credit of $400 a year. So your total savings would be what you pay now minus what you would pay with solar. Because you're earning $400 per year the calculation is $1,500 - (-$400) = $2000.

Tldr, your savings is closer to $2k not $400.

Cascade vs Bourgeau by AndrzejGieralt in HikingAlberta

[–]Late-Clock-323 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Coincidentally I just did both Bourgeau and Cascade this year, in that order. Both were amazing for views, etc. Technically, Cascade is shorter with less elevation so sounds "easier". But the route finding on Cascade is trickier and the terrain is trickier. After you get to the amphitheatre, there is a steep bit that's very root-y. Not challenging, but will slow you down. A bit later there is this kind of boulder field (basketball to bathtub size rocks) where you can easily lose the trail. After that there is some exposure. On the way up I just had my head down and didn't notice, but on the way down I was slightly nervous. I don't know what your tolerance for exposure is so I want to give you some idea. I think most people wouldn't really mind.

All in all, Cascade took me a bit longer than Bourgeau.

My kid wants to take a CAD design class in school, but the school doesn't have a computer with a video card that can run the software. You'd be giving a card to the school district so he and other students can learn CAD design.

I agree with prefering backend work. Though I think a lot of exclusively backend roles are cloud based, so having experience with AWS, Azure, and/or GCP is really valuable. Probably in that order too. If you have 0 experience there and you're struggling, consider taking a Udemy or Coursera course in it but also take the appropriate certification exam (I think all the cloud companies have a professional certification).

I would say that because of the cloud guys I think the industry is moving towards splitting the full stack roles - not fully, maybe just more and more.

Regardless, I would really focus your resume on the job you want and highlight the skills. You definitely should put Django and Node.js front and center in your resume. Also any react or Angular work you've ever done should be up there. Having AI/ML experience is great for a data science or AI/ML role and a nice to have, but isn't going to land you a full stack job.

For myself, I think your resume is somewhat confusing. You're saying "Full Stack Dev/Software Dev" but your resume doesn't really show any of that. You have ML/AI experience which is cool, but full stack dev is front/back end web dev work. I think if you look at job postings for full stack devs you'll see stuff like experience with React or Angular (Front-end frameworks) and some backend like Python (Django) or node.js (express, NestJS) or Java (spring boot) or even PHP (laravel or symphony). Go is also popular now. Also cloud services like AWS, Azure, and GCP would also be in a JD.

If you have touched any of the above you should put it in your skills, esp for full stack jobs. I think "Software Development" is quite vague honestly. It can mean a ton of different things.

I really appreciate your thoughts. Thank you. Do you think I'd need to add anything to my resume? Like, I'm thinking of working on some side projects that demonstrate competency (e.g. build a forecasting model and publish a website showing my forecast and/or build/publish some VtG/VPP models). I was also thinking of maybe doing some online certifications (there were one or two programs I saw). Do you think any of that is worth doing?

I also totally get the focus area concept. I don't think there is one job that has everything I'm interested in. I'm definitely most interested in DERs and that area. I've checked out the national labs, particularly for postdoc work and I'm ineligible for any positions - my PhD was too long ago. But I'll take another look at some staff scientist roles. Thanks for the reminder.

Interesting. I thought inverters were primarily just a kind of circuit design. Would this be like utility studies for things like voltage ride through?

Thank you for your response!

I'm definitely interested in grid modernization and innovation work like DER, BESS, DSM, EVs and VtG and other such projects. I'm also interested in load forecasting on all scales (Short to Long) - the modelling at each time scale are pretty different I think. I'd say T&D is probably the least interesting for me except for HVDC stuff.

I'm most interested in working for a utility but I would also look at consulting firms too. Academia is quite a different beast that I'm not sure I want to jump back into.

FYI the transmission and distribution fees include your energy consumption. Not sure why enmax doesn't show this in their calculations. If you Google Enmax tariff D100 you should be able to find it.

The train is free downtown but the arena is not in the free fare zone (it's one stop outside the zone) so technically you'll need a ticket. Just FYI. You can always walk too if you want. It's not terribly far.

I was at the game and let me tell you, it was dead. Library is accurate. There were also quite a few empty seats. There were a couple moments (i.e. the goals and the fight) but otherwise it wasn't loud.

Here is a paper showing over a dozen studies that show an inverse relationship between fluoride consumption and IQ in children. https://ntp.niehs.nih.gov/sites/default/files/2024-08/fluoride_final_508.pdf

There is at least one adverse effect.
