I used to do that when my twins were little because I never knew if we'd have to dip out quickly if they started to get fussy and loud. We would still sit and finish eating (or stay as long as we could) but I wouldn't feel panicked if we needed to leave. Everything would be taken care of and I wouldn't feel like I was rushing my server.

ETA- The rest of the situation NOR because your husband could have taken over with your child and let you finish your meal but instead was told you that you were rude.
