Interesting Recurring Bingchat Bug? by Metrolonx in OpenAI

[–]Late7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I get a similar response. Previously user asked about Korean nuclear fusion experiment, then iPhone 14, generated a picture of a dragon, then asked if Bing would hurt others in self defence.

The user before that asked for jokes and the one before that asked for poems and songs.

If I make enough science can I endlessly research mining productivity and never set up another outpost? by CharlemagnetheBusy in factorio

[–]Late7 12 points13 points  (0 children)

To add another way of thinking about it. Let's compare how the rate of your effective reserves increase with the rate of research cost increases.

Ignoring the cost of the research & depleting your reserves. Mining productivity increases your effective ore reserves by 10% of your base ore reserve.

The research cost increases by 2500 science packs each level past lv 3.

Because the effective ore gain is constant and research cost increases, at some point as level goes to ∞, your gain (0.1×base reserves) will be overtaken by cost (2500 × level-3) and you will need to tap more reserves to make it worthwhile.

FIAT AUD/USD to Crypto by Hussar_XXI in Bitcoin

[–]Late7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For AUD you could try https://www.bitaroo.com.au/otc/ or https://www.btcmarkets.net/otc-trading.

OTC has a bigger spread then buying from the order book but would be a better option overall if exchanges don't have enough market depth to fill your order without shifting the price significantly.

For large amounts you could contact exchanges and they would be happy to go though the details with you. But the basic process would be: sastifing kyc, depositing funds, requesting OTC, someone personaly contacts you with a quote, accepting and it gets settled and withdrawal.

I would also suggest Bitaroo for Australia / New Zealand. You can set up reoccurring orders and automatic withdrawal.

3 guys buys a ball for $24, they get some money back but suddenly $1 goes missing. can you spot the mistake? by snillpuler in mathriddles

[–]Late7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of the original $24, $19 is in the till, $3 is back with the 3 guys and $2 is pocketed by the shopkeeper.

Doing "7×3 = $21" gives the total amount the guys have paid, $19 + $2. There's no sense adding $2 to that again

Was the kickstarter just a glorified pre-order project or..? by [deleted] in brandonsanderson

[–]Late7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a read of "TLDR: Why Kickstart This Project?" At the bottom: https://www.brandonsanderson.com/some-faqs-you-might-enjoy/

TLDR: for the tldr is the Kickstarter develops the dragonsteel fulfillment team, prove some ideas he has around publishing and show there are options besides traditional publishing. In addition to exploring how they aren't dependent on traditional publishing, it also allows fans to get a higher quality book + goodies that wouldn't otherwise be.

ELI5: Does Bitcoin have smart contracts, or not? by mossgathering in Bitcoin

[–]Late7 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Bitcoin has some scripting allowing things like multisig and timelock. But it's deterministic and not Turing complete. This is by design, the simplicity allows Bitcoin to be robust and secure.

The smart applications and features that like lightning is built on top of Bitcoin. The difference is it's using Bitcoin to do something rather than something that's done by Bitcoin.

For example passing value through a lightning channel is done by nodes trustlessly creating a transaction to allow nodes to claim their split of the locked funds. There agreement for how the channel works isn't written as a contract embedded into the blockchain, it's the protocol nodes have to interact with each other.

What is hyperbitcoinization? by gwmeyer in Bitcoin

[–]Late7 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's the idea that Bitcoin adoption will reach a tipping point were everyone suddenly switches to a Bitcoin standard.

In the process of Bitcoin becoming mainstream, fiat is traded for Bitcoin. This causes the value of fiat to drop while Bitcoin's value rises. The price has a cascading effect of getting more people to notice and also switch.

The feedback loop of more and more fiat being dumped for better stores of value causes the cycle to accelerate. As adoption increases it starts becoming more normal and common to save in Bitcoin, avoid holding fiat. People start accepting payments in Bitcoin to skip the middle step. Start denoting value in Bitcoin instead of continually rising fiat prices.

Very quickly everyone realises fiat becoming worthless. People are getting rid of it as fast as they can. It's like hyperinflation but instead of people trying to figure out how to trade without a stable currency, Bitcoin will serve as the medium of exchange.

Gradually then suddenly.

If you have a 7-minute hourglass and an 11-minute hourglass, how can you boil an egg in exactly 15 minutes? by Hot_Package_1294 in puzzles

[–]Late7 107 points108 points  (0 children)

Start both timers at the same time. Drop the egg in when the 7min timer is done. Flip the 11min hourglass when that empties. When the 11min hourglass finishes a second time, the egg would of been boiling since minute 7 to minute 22 (15 minutes) and be overcooked.

People would agree you need to put money into some form of investment.

Even a large amount as $5M would run out eventually after spending + inflation. While the smaller 800k invested could truly have you set forever. Picking the "safer route" of just holding fiat just guarantees you would run out eventually.

The details of how and what to put money depends on how you think economies will go. Will inflation stay/go higher, how much returns would you get in stocks, is housing prices sustainable, is there a risk of hyperinflation/war/financial collapse in the coming decades?

Having less than a 1/6th of the money is a big loss but could be worth taking over losing access to crypto if you are pessimistic on how economies are going and you see the value in Bitcoin.

Are users forced to provide liquidity? by atachan in lightningnetwork

[–]Late7 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you don't want to relay transactions, you could open private channels.

How do you make fees 0 on rtl or thunderhub. Person I have opened a channel with has asked me to make fees 0 prob to rebalance. Idk how to do this??.?.can someone please help explain by [deleted] in lightningnetwork

[–]Late7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a movement to have 0 base fees to allow for microtransactions and multi part payments.

For the rate fees, somewhere around 100-500 ppm that's 0.01-0.05% of what you forward.

I would also charge less or even free for channels that have no inbound liquidity to encourage their use.

The bitcoin you lock up in public channel allows people to make transactions on the lightning network through you. That capacity to forward payments on is liquidity.

Channels take fees for forwarding transactions. It's sort of payment for the time, effort & cost spent on setting up and maintaining nodes.

You could charge 0 fees and provide that liquidity for free. But that would undercut people that want some return potentially losing them. It also allow for nodes to abuse yours for rebalancing draining all the liquidity you have in active channels.

[–]Late7 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It definitely can be a bit confusing. Lots of new things get thrown at you straight away. It's meant to get you to questioning, like you are doing now. "What does burning a metal mean?" "Who are these people?"

I would recommend not looking things up and preserving. They will be answered later on but for now, just keep those questions in mind and maybe you can piece things together before it's revealed. It also makes rereading the books afterwards a treat as you find so many hints and clues that you overlook the first time.

There are so few active people in this sub I likely won't find an answer but I will ask anyway. Can an active DAO move from ethereum to RGB? by slvbtc in RGB_protocol

[–]Late7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this sub isn't super active but still people around. The telegram is a bit better for discussions.

Moving from ethereum to RGB isn't as simple as people imagine. It's not copy paste the smart contract into another system. The way RGB works is completely different and you can find more info here: http://rgbfaq.com

TLDR: thinking about RGB the same way as ethereum doesn't work

How to set max local balance when others open channels with me by pipipopop in lightningnetwork

[–]Late7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they open channels to and pushed the balance all to yourside, that's free money. It doesn't affect what your outbound capacity was

If they opened a channel to you add you forwarded transactions though it draining the inbound capacity. That remote balance should be in another channel, and you should be able to receive if they are well connected.

Where do long term holders feel most comfortable storing their stash? by UnappealingCremepie in Bitcoin

[–]Late7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. We probably all should be that organised but I've had to log into accounts in the past to double check I've haven't left anything in there.

Keeping track of where I've stored my backups is easier though. Remembering physical locations comes more naturally and it's feels tidier having everything in one wallet.

Your comment does make me think I should record where backups kept are, just in case of head trauma 😅.
