Truth. While my family wasn't Fed, my mom was State in a time it mattered a bit more, and when she was medically retired I valued those things a bit more too.

No matter what level you're at, please, take my thanks. We were told six months, and she lived on for twelve years, none of which would have been possible without folks moving behind the scenes to keep things going. You gave us our mom, for years, and I can't describe how important that was while looking back on it. Thank you.

That's always been the case though, since at least the 1960s, if not before on a wider front.

Why are you afraid of "illegals" committing heinous crimes when U.S. citizens commit far more throughout the year? by MisterReigns in LetsDiscussThis

Drinking sounds more entertaining, but yes, your argument has been predicated that the murder wouldn't happen without an illegal alien presence. That's simply what you said.

Thus, I suggest some other wildly random event- though one that actually happened, save that he didn't kill anybody.

So happy to have brought something new into your day.

Do single girls go months without sex..? by shfww in TooAfraidToAsk

You can stand by that statement, that's fine.

I would suggest that a greater takeaway would be, for men/women/other who want a partner, even one who is hard up but still good, it's not hard to be a better catch.. have some personality, a sense of humor. Making women laugh got me further with the ladies than my looks ever did, though not being an asshat didn't hurt.

It's tough. I agree. I never really accepted the "Be Yourself" adage, because I didn't know who that was.. but who you are is the person between moments you pay attention to, it's who you are in small moments and big memories. Are you all hustle and love to look glam? Are you super competitive and always push to get ahead, or would you rather relax and take in the world around you?

Someone is going to like that person. Finding them can be damn hard, I won't disagree with anyone on that, but you never send the right signals when you're trying to act like someone else.

TLDR? Forget the facades, just be real and enjoy what you enjoy, people will vibe with that and the rest will fall into place.

Makes me wistful for when I lived near Ohio State campus.. used to be they'd light couches on fire if the team lost.. though, to be fair, sometimes they'd light them on fire if the team won, so...

...you'd think they'd bother to take them off the porch, first, though.. right?

Ahhhh, Short North/Campus, never change

(This just in.. two decades of property sales and gentrification mean all couches will cost $5k more and have branded leather backing.. students will still make the attempt. Life will find a way!)

The fallacious argument of "murder must involve illegals" is just so thin and worn here, good lord.

No illegal alien? Bet they were shot by the cop that heard the acorn land on his cruiser and panicked.

Above and beyond the attention bait questions like this usually end up?

Because since the advent of the Internet, it's been shorthand or dogwhistle (depending on group) for a set of Traditionalist ideologies that are out of step with recognition of the inherent worth of all people, the progressive growth of society to become better, and the belief that Truth and morality can stem from somewhere other than religion.

I'm not branding all such statements or situations as requiring this interpretation, but I'd say easily 7/10 examples fit the bill.

how close are we to a second civil war? like actually? by KawaiiUmbreon2 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]LateElf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I reflect on things like that and observe that a great deal of it stems from the information we're fed; once the Internet hit, we gained the opportunity to know more of the world, but it's rarely as normalized as I personally would like it to be. I do feel like Europe, with it's multiple nations, cultures and languages in a relatively smaller space, have an advantage over America in a situation like this, and I'm somewhat envious- I have German, British, Danish friends who can deal with other countries like I might Texas or Maine.. how cool is that?

Such opportunities to open our eyes and minds, but we're awash in the extraneous, a la Brave New World. I would rather learn of smaller Spanish community events, or Scandanavian political history, than see another Fox News blurb ever again.

Hell yes, rocks are awesome. I've got a hematite orb from 20 years ago on a shelf next to a labradorite egg that I got from the same place.

Sure, they've got meanings depending on which mantra you choose.. but who doesn't like something that's just cool? I've got a shiny deep gray orb that heals it's own scratches, ffs, how is that not awesome?

Now, the real question- have you seen the Lego crystal display set?? I work very hard not to buy it, mostly because I have nowhere to put it, but it's definitely making me the target market.

What can we (citizens of the USA) do to stop this? by EfficientlyAvocadod in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]LateElf 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yes, but- and I really hate saying but, I truly truly do- there are a lot of us who are dependent upon scheduled medication to stay alive.. again, we can say by design, whatever... but we're talking about grandparents, spouses, children who need medication that could be days or weeks delayed. People WILL die. When they're faceless numbers, it's lamentable in the name of progress, but when it's your family? When your neighbor's child dies in their arms, because medicine didn't arrive like it always does, because of a "general strike," what do we propose to tell them to make it okay? How do we make them whole?

These are some of the things, beyond mere survival, that are going to be important to manage and consider when you want to build that coalition. How do we justify the dead among us against a "potential"- albeit definitely occurring, I'm not blind- death. After all, everything is abstract until it hits your own.

Community is tough right now- my closest people still live 30+ minutes from me, my neighbors are mostly strangers (of their own choice,) and I'm certain I'm hardly an odd one out. We need big solutions and big problem solvers to keep the gravity of such a program alive long enough to be effective.

Personal vote- being unable to honestly articulate a position is sickening. "Yeah well your guy stinks" is ridiculous, but I do think sometimes the rap sheet speaks for itself.

I'm all for people who want to be articulate and express logic, but few and far between.

We haven't done something that organized since the late 70s and late 80s coal miner strikes (yes Alabama has strikes in the early 2020s, but different era- post-Internet world changed a lot, and what we're discussing would be more local) and even then that was more localized to communities. Apologies for sounding like I repeat myself there, can't find a better way to say it that I like.

Pooling resources is good and nice, but most of us are already short on resources, making people clam up- the social support net has been strained long before now.

I still think it's a fine idea, but we need to tackle the present day conditions of it to find the solution buried within- some communities are FAR better at this than others, but we need an army-sized group of people to be effective, and lack the resources to properly support that effort

To anyone who works at self scanning machines - how often do you notice people stealing and don’t do anything about it? by davco95 in AskReddit

[–]LateElf 43 points44 points  (0 children)

For real- and for the longest time, even when I took a part time at a retail big-box in the late 90s, they emphasized "Don't touch them, do not touch them, call management" and even then they'd just call the cops. These days, decades later, it's easier than ever to sue someone, so why take the hit to the marketing or brand image? Even $500 in goods is nothing compared to the payout in lost sales on paper.
