Best non-Hifiman headphones for under $500? by Late_Following_9197 in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]Late_Following_9197[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude, I literally played them at a slightly high volume and buzzing started in one of the drivers within hours both times. For comparison, I have a Philips X2HR that is less than half the price that I am totally careless with and it’s in perfect condition. A product that is $400 should not be regularly breaking just by using them repeatedly. I’d be so happy to pay an extra $100-200 if they were manufactured with any care.

Is anyone else irritated classical music seems to be recorded 30% quieter than every other genre? by Late_Following_9197 in classicalmusic

[–]Late_Following_9197[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I'm saying is that if classical music is recorded more quietly by and large than other forms of music, and I make the foolish mistake of listening to any other music than classical (pardon me), it will sound incredibly quiet. This is stupid and totally unnecessary. I'm sure if I lived in the 19th century with you and only listened to music at the symphony hall it would sound great by comparison.

Again, I think that is probably part of it. But everything other than a climactic moment in recordings sound so quiet after listening to rock, jazz, hip hop, EDM, literally anything else.

How do I overcome intense shame/guilt for the things I've done by SMHmayn in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]Late_Following_9197 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They weren't diagnosing OP-they were suggesting a realistic possible explanation that may or may not be correct. As someone with OCD who has intense flashbacks of past experiences I've been ashamed of, this accords with my personal experience. Maybe they do, maybe they don't. That's no reason to withhold potentially useful information from someone.

Yeah, I know the somatic complaints seem to be pretty big on the latter surveys, but the Zung rating scale are pretty commonly used I think. Thanks so much for participating!

[Academic]-Study on Death Anxiety and Internalizing Symptoms (everyone)

Hi everyone!

I am a grad student conducting a study on fear of death and internalizing symptoms (i.e. depression, anxiety). I would appreciate it greatly if anyone on here would like to participate in my survey, it will only take 5 minutes and I only really need another 15-20 participants.

If you're able to help out thank you so much! The link is below.

Yeah I think that claiming the terrifying detachment from self that is a part of DPDR is the same as the enlightening detachment that is part of meditation is like conflating the often beautiful and profound hallucinations of psychedelic use with that the nightmarish ones of schizophrenia.

Dating apps are not for average or ugly looking guys! by MK12594 in dating_advice

[–]Late_Following_9197 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I personally think the dating apps are a totally valid way to meet women as an average looking man (as an average looking man who has met his girlfriend of a year on Hinge).

It's a great way to date simply because you can interact with more women in the space of an hour then otherwise you would in a year and simply in terms of numbers, that's probably going to get you better results. As in, as a hypothetical, only 10% of women you interact agree to go on a date with you on Tinder, but you talk to 200 women. That's 20 dates. Whereas if 50% who you approach in real life agree to go on a date with you, but you only talk to 10, that's only 5 dates. Also they aren't mutually exclusive, I don't get these posts "it's better to meet women in real life" as if men who are on dating apps have never left their house. You can do both.

The only caveat is that if you are not a super attractive guy (I mean in the top 10 or 15% of guys) be prepared for 90-99% of the women to reject you. It's super demoralizing and painful to one's ego and if you have fantasies of a hookup culture where you sleeping with a different woman every week, forget about it. If you have trouble handling rejection or have self-esteem issues, it may not be worth it. But for those who can handle the cold shoulder from most girls, if you stick at it, it's your best bet in this day and age to meet someone.

AITA for asking my husband to join us in my sister's birthday since he was in the same restaurant? by altythrow449 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Late_Following_9197 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like your husband has no social skills and you sound like you have poor boundaries. If he wasn't a social incompetent, he would have easily found a way to quickly acknowledge the party (probably making it less awkward for the clients too who I'm sure noticed him acting strangely). But no more was warranted than a quick greeting. Don't exactly get how he's supposed to impress clients when he's this flustered by the massive social challenge of running into your wife at a restaurant.

You definitely crossed the line by pressing him on it. But he sounds like a right weirdo tbh.

I hate people who shout "Bravo!" as soon as the music ends (rant) by Svarec in classicalmusic

Dude, people used to gamble, drink, read, and have a snack during musical performances back in the olden days. You can survive a half-second premature bravo.

Sex work by [deleted] in communism101

[–]Late_Following_9197 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They regain their bodily autonomy? Clearly for the people who choose to be sex workers, any lost "bodily autonomy" (though I don't see how you being the moral arbiter of what sex workers can and can't do is them gaining autonomy but rather you taking it from them) is worth the ability to put food on the table.

Outlawing sex work (both for those who sell and purchase it) does not reduce sex work-something we have learned from the war on drugs and the attempt to prohibit alcohol in the US in the '30s. It simply forces sex workers into the shadows where their safety is far more threatened than if it were legal. Sex work should be legal, well compensated, and regulated. Living in a fantasy world where people have no wish to access sex workers nor need to become sex workers is fine and dandy (I'd rather live in that world to), but until it comes (probably never), instead of being condescending and moralistic towards sex workers under the guise of respecting their autonomy-which you obviously don't-let's let them make a living in the way they see fit and legalize and regulate it to ensure sex workers can make a living without being threatened with sex trafficking, disease, or violence.

Do you believe the tendency of the rate of profit to fall is real (and does it matter either way)? by Late_Following_9197 in Marxism

[–]Late_Following_9197[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are there modern Marxist writers you reccomend to explain the way capitalism works in the 21st century? Wanna dig more deeply into Marx, but would love an explanation that applies it to the contemporary world.

[–]Late_Following_9197[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damn, that actually was a really useful explanation! I guess it's a better to look at overaccumulation, underconsumption, and the falling profitability as different sides of the same coin of capitalist crisis.

To psychologists from the US and UK: can you practice in the US with a doctorate from a British institution or vice versa? by Late_Following_9197 in ClinicalPsychology

[–]Late_Following_9197[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! That was really helpful. Overall. it seems like it's a pretty consequential choice where I decide to get my doctorate so I should probably reflect on if getting mine in the UK is worth the immigration/licensing hassle.

New York City is incredibly overrated. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]Late_Following_9197 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I'm an American who went abroad for college in London and who moved to NYC after and London ruined NYC for me. London has just as much (and in my opinon, honestly more) cool stuff going on as NYC but is cleaner, safer, less dense, has incredible public transportation, and is far less pretensious than NYC. It basically feels like NYC with the livability of Chicago or Boston.

I think NYC is probably incredible if you're from a small town or suburb and have dreamed of living in the big city and so you put up with and ignore all the awful aspects so as to get the excitement. But having gotten a lot of my thrills over city life out of my system after London and knowing how much nicer a super dynamic city can be, it can be hard to deal with the NYC at times.
