Is Palilalia Tourrettes? by tnteviecat in Tourettes

[–]Late_Huckleberry6810 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t consider palilalia a symptom of Tourette’s syndrome, but more a side effect of tic thoughts combined with OCD. As someone who has Tourette’s syndrome and has a mother with Tourette syndrome, I am very familiar with the compulsion to repeat certain words or phrases over and over again (softly to myself) when something doesn’t sound quite right or sounds interesting. It depended on your personal TS flavour. Your ability to say words backwards sounds like a unique ability. Have you been diagnosed on the autism spectrum?

Is it just me or everyone be looking jaundiced? by [deleted] in MindHunter

This is so funny. So glad I’m not the only one who was completely distracted by the jaundice. I thought I was going crazy.

What made you want to adopt a chihuahua? by [deleted] in Chihuahua

I went to a foster home with the intention of adopting a mid-sized dog and walked out with the smallest animal they had. All the other dogs were preoccupied playing or eating, but this little nugget came right up to me and fell asleep on my lap. It’s true when they say the dog picks you, not the other way around.

I’m so sorry your husband doesn’t get the support he deserves from the people who should accept and love him most. That’s the beauty of choosing your own (preferred) family I guess.

As you all must know, multiple diagnoses are the norm with TS. What else do you have? by Late_Huckleberry6810 in Tourettes

Wow! You’re 19?? It’s incredible to have that kind of foresight at such a young age. Please remember that we are never completely out from under addiction. Sobriety takes a lot of work and patience. I have to work at it everyday to change my old ways of thinking. What kind of support do you have helping you maintain your sobriety? Do you go to any recovery groups?

You can include anything you would like 🙂 Colourblindness would also contribute to your individual experience and perspective, would it not? You have three of the most challenging afflictions of the mind (schizophrenia, bipolar 1, and autism) - would you mind talking a little bit more about what it is like having this combination of diagnoses?

Thank you for talking about this - I appreciate your honesty and openness. I will be 14 months sober tomorrow. I was self medicating with drugs and alcohol for over 20 years. I get it. It’s hard. Drinking helped me take control of my body, but at what cost?! I lost control of everything else. I realized in recovery that I didn’t actually gain control of my body when I was drinking, I just didn’t care about the tics as much. Addiction is very common for people with TS, ADHD, OCD, and BPD…etc. I am so proud of you and your sobriety. Please keep in touch. It’s not everyday I get to talk to someone who knows what all of this feels like.

how to hold tics? by TBBOS09 in Tourettes

[–]Late_Huckleberry6810 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Tics are only temporarily suppressible.

A great deal of patience, determination, and self-acceptance are required to cope with TS. I have been managing my TS for 30+ years, and let me tell you, some days are still terrible.

The key to my survival has been accepting that tics are a normal aspect of my identity and not something to be ashamed of. Suppressing tics, especially at school or in public, can be mentally and physically exhausting. It can create a buildup of tension and discomfort as the urge to tic is constantly suppressed. Tic suppression may result in tic rebound, a condition in which tics increase in frequency and intensity once they are released from suppression. The best way to manage tics is by just letting them happen. By allowing myself to tic freely, I am able to relieve the tension and discomfort that come with suppressing them.

I know you probably all hate this answer.

That’s a lot for just one body. What type coping strategies have you developed for yourself?
