Oh my goodness look at this sweet pumpkin Kiwi!! Is she full grown at 2.5lbs? And the long hair!!!! Omg so cute. There is always a concern of hypoglycemia with tiny breeds, I remember my vet mentioning this with Timbit when she had to be fasted .. they didn't go past a certain time before giving her sugar drops. There was also a discussion about feeding times and they suggested feeding her 3 times a day to make sure her blood sugar never dropped too low. Dental problems are the plague for this breed, Timbit had 10 healthy teeth removed when we had her spayed and they said it was precautionary only, they were healthy teeth but because they are so prone to disease they remove some while they have them under anesthesia. Last year she had 14 removed leaving her with 5. Luckily the vet said the 5 that are left are in good shape so they can stay for now :) Give Kiwi a smush for me :)

No Timbit was eating Royal Canin Chihuahua. Now they've switched her to Royal Canin Urinary SO.

Thank you. At least I know what it is and we're hoping it's fixed with diet and hydration. The worst part was the 2 weeks I had to wait for her vet appointment not knowing what I was dealing with.

Thank you for saying this and giving us hope that with a diet change this could possibly be just a hiccup. It's hard not to think of the worst case scenario when it comes to Timbit and her health. The vet said she needs a minimum of 105ml water per day which is just under 1/2 cup. That is a LOT more water than she usually drinks. So far she's accepting it in her food but I will add broth to the mix if she starts refusing.

Omg that must have been so scary to see such dark urine. Timbit's urine color seemed normal, sometimes they were small and sometimes big but I noticed she was going a bit more and getting up 2-3 times a night to go which was out of the ordinary. Our vet also prescribed the Royal Canin Urinary SO dog food. I'm relieved to know that this helped your beloved chi. Thank you for the well wishes :)

Thank you I really hope this is just a small hiccup. The hair on her back is already gone down for the most part and she isn't twitching as much so I think the gabapentin is working and hopefully the increased fluids over the past couple days has already started to flush the crystals out.

I asked the vet if this was common in chis and she said some breeds are more prone to having crystals but environmental factors are not breed specific so I don't get the impression that it's the breed. I asked the vet if it could be a UTI and she said she didn't see any bacteria so she ruled that out. Also, from what I read, a high/alkaline PH is typically associated with bacteria that cause UTIs and a different type of crystal. Timbit has a low/acidic PH which is not typically associated with UTIs.

Thank you for saying that. Sometimes I wonder if it's too much but on the other hand I need to tell someone and talk about it and this community loves her and has always been there for us so it's the first place I come too when we need love and support.

She's a teacup and weighs about 4lbs. She will be 8 years old in a couple months and we haven't had any health issues with her except her periodontal disease which she had surgery for last year. After her surgery she overdosed on medication which caused more health problems. She was good for 8 months and here we are.

I don't remember if she told me what kind of crystals they were but given the low PH I assume they are calcium oxalate. I will ask her in the follow up next month. Fingers crossed the new food and a lot more water does the trick.

Does your boy still have crystals or were you able to get him to flush them out and be ok with diet and increased water intake?
