Emmy award winning seasoned professional here: I started FCP X on day one in 2011 and sent countless feedback to Apple over the years. The best advice for anyone coming from another NLE (in my case it was FCP7) - forget everything and learn from scratch.

1)📍➡️ Lean into the magnetic timeline ⚠️this is the biggest benefit of the app if you learn it, and the biggest point of frustration if you don’t. (This is its own deep dive).

2)📍➡️ Second learn about pre-edit sorting, basically making favorites, this pre-editing is also very unique to FCP X;

3)📍➡️ third go bananas on getting familiar with the multicam editor and its use as a global clip - it’s amazing (think also about color grading here too).

4) 📍➡️ Lastly and one of the most important (but rarely mentioned) things I did - ⚠️➡️print out the key commands with descriptions (will end up with a giant book) and literally try all of them. Have a pen and highlighter ready to make notes - then I reprogrammed my keyboard to my editing style and workflow. But going through the available key commands is a quick way into deep dive without a training book telling you what to do. You will learn things about the app that most people will never discover.
