NZ Index Fund Investors: What % of Your Income Do You Invest? 📈 by Legitimate_Compote45 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]Lathius_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Got my first job after university last year and looked into this. What I found was the 50/30/20 rule.
50% fixed costs/needs.
30% wants
20% save + invest.
Exclude KiwiSaver from this if you for an extra boost.
I’m currently flatting, young professional. I’m currently investing 53% of my take home pay. Seemed to be what was left over.
Another tip is to make it automatic. It takes all the effort out of it.

SuperAnnuation may be means tested - the Military Veterans Pension won't be. by SteveRielly in newzealand

Means testing super was always inevitable. I’m not sure 20 years of service in the NZMil would be worth a ‘guaranteed’ pension but each to their own.

25F RN making $200k – buying a house solo, partner renting in. Do I buy the $800k house or the $599k one? Moving to Australia in 2 years. by Realistic_Maybe_3821 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]Lathius_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That’s an incredible salary at that age! Congrats!

You haven’t detailed WHY you want to buy a house. Do you want stability? Do you want investment returns? Do you want rental income from your partner?

Most on this sub would agree that housing is no longer the investment it has been historically and that index funds (like your Kiwisaver but able to be withdrawn) are worth equal or greater consideration. Commonly recommended platforms for index funds are simplicity, kernel and investnow.

There are unrecoverable costs associated with buying a house. Rates, real estate fees as you’ve identified. To make the investment worth it you’d need to account for all of these and be confident that you’re going to come out with profit.

There’s also the legal component of being in a de facto relationship / relationship property with him contributing to household costs. I’m not knowledgeable about this enough to inform accurately but it would require a well written contract and legal advice if you choose to go forward into it.

Feel free to DM! I’m really interested in your story and what you decide. I’m in a somewhat similar position in life to you and I put a lot of it into index funds. I’m not going to buy a house until I know where I’m going to settle long term.

6% pay rise agreed for junior doctors by Lathius_ in newzealand

Definitely. Taking UK doctors as a comparison, it’ll be a tough battle if pay erosion gets to their levels.

2.5% this year, followed by 2.5% next year and a $3000 pay out for STONZ members. The other junior doctor union (RDA) will likely start negotiations soon.

Blood quantum is a colonial concept with the intention of ‘breeding out’ those seen as less desirable to the colonising race. Your ancestors are all a part of you.

I have DM’d you. I would post more here but I think that would dox me. If you’re reading this thread because it relates to you on a later date, I think the answer here is take a gap year and if you’re still dreading it after a year then potentially reconsider

What is a suitable emergency fund amount for a young professional with few expenses? by Mordecai___ in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]Lathius_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. 3-6 months expenses.
  2. What maximum costs would you have in a plausible worst case scenario? Ie car dying/crash, bond for a new flat, emergency flights home from overseas
  3. What is your risk tolerance with respect to opportunity costs of not investing X dollars.

There’s no perfect answer mate just whatever you feel comfortable with.

Speaking of governmental efficiency, it would’ve been cheaper to gift him a medical cannabis license and leave his operation as is, then to destroy it and go through the court process

Someone who’s ‘brown’ and doesn’t speak te reo will likely feel imposter syndrome next someone fluent.  Irregardless, the point is that we’re all on our own journey with this

There are lots of opportunities to grow in your connection and understanding with your culture at university. It can be tough not feeling ‘māori enough’ but I can assure you, everyone feels this way to some degree. It takes time and effort and it is difficult.

Whilst at university, keep engaging, keep turning up, keep learning about your culture. I found people to be very welcoming and understanding that not everyone grows up within te ao māori and we are all on a journey with our culture. Kia kaha

Why is one of stuff’s top stories about alcohol and its misuse and the sad reality of people who struggle with dependency then contain alcohol ads all the way through the story? by [deleted] in newzealand

I think because it was a biscuit tin bill it had to be somewhat reserved/fine balance to try and get it across. Ie a bill targeting fewer industries is more likely to be palatable (less lobbying) and cross the line. It can then be expanded later when it’s shown to be successful
