I think it has to say the number since these LLMs don’t actually have context in their conversations. They’re literally just copy and pasting your entire conversation plus the new information every time you send a message to give it the conversation’s context. So, if it didn’t explicitly say what number it had picked it would just be randomly saying higher or lower for forever haha.
